I bought this can opener with trepidation as I have had very bad experience with expensive can openers. I thought might as well as it was just $0.88. Even if it goes waste I won't mind. So finally I had a chance to open a can today and to use the can opener. Looking at the can opener I was a little worried that I won't be able to use it and for some time I was not able to figure out how to use it. However once I figured out that you have to lock the small notch just above the wheel on the top of the can and then press to break open the lid, using this was a cinch. I absolutely like this product and would go an buy again when this one finally breaks.

I bought it yesterday, I couldn't even open a can with it. Even though it was under $1 I will be retuning this is a piece of junk!!!!!!!!!! If it could be rated less than 1 star I would.

    Metallic Olives

I bought this can opener for college, since I would be bringing some canned foods to school with me so that I could eat healthy when I needed a late night snack. I didn't use it all last semester since I had thankfully only brought cans that open with pull-tabs. This semester, however, I decided to bring a variety of different foods to supplement my dining plan. This variety of foods included olives, which, on their own, make a great snack (they also make a great snack as a mix with kidney beans, chickpeas, and green olives). As I was working on a cover letter for an internship next summer, my roommate decided to put some of her homemade, authentic Jamaican food in the microwave. The smells wafted over to my side of the room and I became hungry in an instant. This happened at around 9:45. I didn't want her to think I was copying her by eating at the same time as her, so I rummaged through my food bin at around 9:55 and found the perfect snack: olives. This was indeed one of the cans (without pull-tabs) that I had brought and I was very eager to eat the contents of said can. So I grabbed my new can opener and set to work opening the can. The can opener puzzled me, however. It wasn't like the can openers I am used to at home. It is so shallow across the blade that you can't cut the inside of the top. You have to cut into the side of the can. It took me about 20 minutes to figure this out, since I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why it would be designed this way. Once I was able to stab the side of the can, I tried to twist the turner thing that spins the blade wheel. The turner spun but the wheel did not move. I tried this several times but I wasn't sure if anything had happened. I took the label off of the can after about three tries and found out that I had punctured three narrow holes in the side of the can. I didn't know what to do so I drank the olive juice from the holes, hoping to get some sort of inspiration. In the end (I was very hungry), I decided to just keep stabbing around the can. This took me about forty minutes to complete, since I took breaks in between the first twenty stabs so as not to arouse any suspicions in my roommate. I thought it must have looked extremely strange to be drinking from a can, so I wanted to keep the freak-o-meter to minimal levels. I wanted to keep some human dignity, after all. In the middle of stabbing, I had to take a break to go to the bathroom and take some deep breaths. By the time I finished stabbing, it was around 11:10 pm and I had had enough. Although I found at least a few metal pieces in my olives, I did enjoy them. I would not, in a million years, recommend buying this product. It caused me great heartache due to poor design. I must say that I like Mainstays' bookshelf, but their can opener has gotten a seal of disapproval from me. Sometimes objects are worth an extra dollar or two investment. In this case, I would highly recommend the extra investment. As it is, I will be buying a new can opener (that works) and until then, sticking to pull-tab cans. Hope this review gives you some insights into this product. Please don't take this review as a be-all, end-all, though. Look at other reviews and facts and determine the truth for yourself. Every story has many sides. Unfortunately, mine was a bad side but it is up to you to find out what your future will be.
