I own two of these and am wanting to add a third to act as a small book shelf because it would fit perfectly where other, wider, bookshelves wouldn't. My only gripe, and reason why I gave it 4 stars and 4 stars on 'Features' is because I wish it were a little taller so that I could get 5 shelves of DVDs per unit instead of 4. The way it is now, I can fill up the 4 shelves but have to lay DVDs horizontally on the smaller gaps in order to fit more on the shelf. It's not really that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have all of my films be organized in the same vertical manner. Hence, the 4 stars.

The attachment of the bottom shelf should be done with the same hardware as the top and fixed shelf. Screwing the bottom did not work correctly as the screws went off line and broke through the side of the right upright member. Using the same hardware as the top and fixed shelf would eliminate this problem.

Being particle board and laminate I knew I wasn't going to get a top of the line piece of furniture, but I am pleasantly surprised how sturdy this storage tower is and how decent it looks. I bought this to hold DVDs only, not a mixture of media. This shelving unit is assembled in two pieces, a top and bottom, and is joined by a fixed middle shelf. This means you can not adjust all the shelving throughout the cabinet to suit your needs. I couldn't even insert the final shelf because there was simply no space left. I played around with shelf spacing and had to settle with laying dvds down on the very top and bottom shelves and standing them up properly (how I wanted every dvd to be) on the remaining shelves. If you did say two shelves of dvds, and the rest cds, it would probably work out nicely, but be warned that if you want to store just dvds you are going to cap out around 90 before you've got to start jamming cramming them in there and leaving shelves out.

    • I am answering this 7 months later, but yes, there is assembly. You need a screwdriver and a hammer. But I am a 55 year old Mom and did it without help, so it can't be too hard.

    • Yes, but I found it easy and took me only about 15 minutes to assemble. It has all premade drill holes and is put together by doing the bottom half first and then the top half. I believe all I needed was a philips screwdriver and a light hammer tapping to seat the top half onto the locking pins.

    • Yes. You will need a tack hammer and a phillips head screwdriver. And about 15 minutes, tops. Piece of cake.

It seems most of these storage cabinets have a cardboard back..thank you
    by faithfull1 1/4/2012
    • hahaha- the backs are folded veneered cardboard...surprise! (you get what you pay for!) i needed to reinforce the bottoms of the 2 i got so theyi wouldn't collapse in...

    • No it is cardboard, it comes in two separate pieces. The unit is actually two pieces connected with wooden dowels. If you glue the dowels when you put it together it helps to stabilize the unit. The back pieces fit exactly to the edges of the unit, overlapping in the middle. I use it for books and it seems study and stable. No wobbles.

    • Back is heavy cardboard and when tacked to the frame work, it is very sturdy. I use one of mine for about 100 cans of food and have slid it around my kitchen fully loaded with no wobbling at all. I use my other for books and heavy things as well. I love 'em!

    • The back is the typical thin laminate backing (that come folded in half & you nail it to the back). The shelf does seem pretty sturdy though, the base come out forward to keep it steady.

    • I have this cabinet filled with cd's. It is pretty sturdy and I do not have a problem with it wobbling. It has 4 rubber feet for the bottom of the cabinet. This cabinet has a cardboard backing. (like most others)

    • It is thick cardboard that looks like the color of the wood. Not bad, just not wood.
