I expand this out all the way and during the winter store 18 pairs of boots and shoes on it, and in the summer, double that because I put the boots away for winter. I've found that keeping the rack against the wall and turning it backwards (so the lower bar is closest to the wall) keeps shoes from sliding off the rack. I keep tall boots on top and short boots on the middle, with flats and tennis shoes on the floor. There is enough space between each "level" to even stack flats on top of each other.
