I am going to come into this review stating the obvious: these are NOT top of the line shelves. They are less than $30 a piece and made of MDF with a laminate. They are not solid wood and carved by a little old Italian guy with a wood planer and whittling knife. Be reasonable. What they are is cheap shelving that has held up to the last 4 years of wear and tear (with now 3 kids) with a little maintenance here and there. I will address some of the concerns and complaints people have had of the shelves and what we have done with them. Our shelves (we have 3 of the tall 5 shelf ones and 3 of the smaller 2 shelf ones) have a variety of uses in our house. The tall ones are mostly for books and some breakables on the top shelf and top, our smaller ones are used as shoe storage in the foyer, fabric storage in the sewing room and cookbook storage in the kitchen. WARPING: The tall ones are sporting some fairly heavy text books on the bottom 2 shelves in all 3 units. My husband is a software engineer so as I said...heavy books. The bottom shelf has managed to hold their weight just fine as it has lots of structure support from the frame, the second to the bottom shelf warped a bit after about a year of storing them, though not badly. We solved this warping issue when we moved (we have moved 3 times with these units) by screwing down through the shelf with black headed screws to fix a 1"x1" beam the long way to the center of the shelf bottom. So far the pegs have held up just fine to the weight. STABILITY: Even the best solid wood shelf will wobble a bit until it is loaded some, unless it weighs a ton already. We like that these are easier to move because they don't weigh as much as a bus. We didn't test the stability until be loaded the bottom shelf. Once we did that they wobbled very little. It is worth noting that with 3 climbing monkeys (kids) we decide to use brackets on the top to join the 3 shelves together for added stability since we can't bolt them to the wall (we rent a townhome and the studs are hard to find). We had considered even screwing them together with black headed screws instead, but opted against it for now. BACKING: Yes, it is black cardboard. Thin cardboard at that. It tends to tear from the nails you use to keep it on if you are repeatedly hitting the back of it or moving them a lot as the pressure or torque of doing so bows the cardboard. My advice is to use ALL the nails they give you to fasten the cardboard. It will support it better and make sure your selves are squared up to the cardboard before you start nailing. Tape it in place on each side to keep it in place while you nail it on and nail it in place starting at the middle of each side. Put the nails in only half way first and check to make sure it stayed in place before driving them in the rest of the way. It's worth noting that we like the selves enough that we are planning to replace the cardboard with wood when we move again. This will increase the stability we expect because it will increase the overall weight. We are also planning to prime and paint the new back a really dark dusty plum to give the shelves a little pop of color behind the books and decor. Most people don't want to add this kind of work onto such cheap shelves but they work for what we need and they look nice enough to be worth this little bit of effort considering they have lasted us 4 years already. Even taking into account the screws, 1"x1" and brackets we have still saved a lot of money in comparison to the next shelf option this size. We also plan to paint the bottom of the lower selves (they are not laminated on the bottom of the lower shelves) and the 1"x1" bracket to make it blend more but we are waiting until we move again (in a couple months) to do so as we will have more room to do it then. We also painted the unused holes for the pegs to make them more invisible. It has worked out really well. We find that a black permanent marker works really well for filling in any tiny nicks or scuffs our kids put in the edges of the shelves and sides. Overall, these shelves have saved us a ton of money and we have had relatively little to complain about considering. We would recommend them to anyone who wants a cheap shelf option and especially to anyone who would be willing to put in a bit of extra work that would increase the quality of these shelves considerably for very little additional monetary investment and a couple days of time. I will add a post to this or a new post once we get the shelves repainted with the new back, but it may not be until we return from our overseas transfer (2 years) depending on time constraints.

Bought 2 of these to hold all of our homeschool materials. Both are roomy, easy to put together and look nice in our homeschool area. I homeschool 6 children, and these hold all of our stuff!

A pathetic piece of craftsmanship

The Mainstays 5-shelf bookcase purchased at my local Wal-Mart is, without a doubt, one of the most pathetic excuses for a piece of furniture I have ever seen. First of all, a piece of wood that affixes to the bottom of the shelf was broken straight out of the box. I decided to glue the piece back together and continue assembling the shelf anyway. The directions are a series of crudely drawn illustrations that are mirror images of the correct ones..(yes, the screws are assembled backwards according to the directions). Once that I had everything assembled and upright I realized in horror that the shelf could not even support it's own flimsy weight! The shelf swayed from side to side, creaking and popping at the slightest touch- (the cheap wood is the consistency of cork so I suppose that I am lucky that I got it to stand on it's own at all). As an added insult, the back panels are two flimsy black pieces of cardboard..literally, poster board that a 5th grader would use to build a book report with. Knowing that the shelf would hold nothing without buckling under it's own shameful condition I disassembled the unit and will be returning it today. Please, save yourself $25 and 2 1/2 hours of your time, don't bother with this piece of utter garbage.

A Miserable Failure

I'm not against the MainStays brand nor am I one of these people who expected a bookshelf that was worth anything more than the $25 or so that I paid for it. However, this bookshelf was - without a doubt - the worst piece of "cheap" furniture that I've ever purchased. Again, it wasn't that I expected anything that was worth more than the $25 that the thing cost, but the bookshelf couldn't even be put together correctly because it was so poorly pre-designed. As an example of the poor pre-designing, the unfinished portion of the lower shelf (i.e. the bottom) has a very slim piece of wood that attaches to it so that there is a front to the bookshelf that hits the ground. On the lower shelf that was in my box - there were no holes pre-drilled for the screws to enter for the piece of wood to attach! And that's just the beginning of the terrible experience that I had with this product. Walmart really ought to consider pulling this from their inventory - it's not even properly designed.

I just moved into a small apartment and needed book cases. After reading the reviews, I was a little unsure, but went for 2 anyway. I am a 5'4" average single woman. And my doctors say I shouldn't be lifting heavy things. They had them at my store, and I needed assistance to get them into my cart then car. Thank you, kindness of strangers. To get them into my place, I opened the boxes and took them up trip by trip (to be careful not to strain myself). I was prepared for the cardboard backing. I didn't have high expectations for a $30 piece. Though it would have been helpful to have a second person to help me put it together, I did it all by myself. My biggest issue in all honesty was figuring out the directions. There were no words... only pictures. I had to lay everything out on my floor to see the big picture before I started assembling. But once I saw how everything fit together it was smooth sailing. I didn't have an issue with the holes not being drilled where they needed to be. The "wood" is delicate, so be careful as you are piecing it together. Overall, I am happy so far with my purchase.

We have several of these to hold our books and collectibles. Yes, they aren't the most sturdy, solid wood book shelves that are available, but since I paid around $27 each for them I'm pretty darn satisfied! These are pretty easy to put together in my opinion. I did read the directions though, which I would suggest before going at it blindly. All you really need is a screw driver and a hammer and you're ready to go! I would suggest taking all of the pieces out first and laying them out on the floor so you can kind of see where you want to start and won't have to keep looking for pieces while you're trying to put it together. We use ours mainly for collectible figures and such but we do have some that are crammed full of books as well. If you put heavy books on the shelves that aren't the solid pieces (bottom shelf and second shelf up), then they will eventually start to bow in the middle. I usually put my biggest, heaviest books on these two shelves and the lighter, paperback ones on the others. I have never had one of these shelves break on me, nor have I had one turn over. The only problems that I've ever encountered after having these for years, is that some of the shelves bow over time if they're carrying something heavy. If you're looking for a shelf to use for figures, toys, dvd/bluray, etc. then this is the shelf for you! They're so inexpensive that I think they're completely worth the slight flimsiness that the other people are complaining about!

I have had a couple of these for about 5 yrs. Mostly to hold fabric. Moving to a smaller , much smaller apt I needed more. They fit my budget. Go together reasonably easy . I now have 5 and need another (walmart please restock my store with dark ones). 2 are holding books the rest hold my fabric and craft /sewing supplies. All in all they have done the job. I also needed help with the weight. At the store an very nice employee took them out to the car. When I got home I had to wait a week for my granddaughter to come help . No way could I pick these up by myself anymore. All in all they do the job at a cheap price.

Well I see I am not the only one who has had a problem with this bookcase. I unfortunately bought it on sight at the store and did not look at the reviews which I am now adding to. After I bought this and laid out the pieces to assemble it, I noticed that they did not drill three holes where there were supposed to be. If you attempt to drill the holes yourself, you will create a blister on the opposite, finished side. This is made out of very cheap particle board with a flimsy paper decal to make it look like read wood that will rip when you drill into it. This weighs 56 pounds and I am not sure if I should assemble the rest and hope nothing else goes wrong and live with the damage or to lug it back down 2 flights of stairs and back to Walmart for a refund. If you are reading this, do yourself a favor and do not buy it to begin with.

For under $30 it is exactly what is expected. The top shelf was originally full of books and it started to sag just a little but with a little rearranging the problem was fixed. It is not suitable for heavy books on all shelves. It is better to spread the books out throughout the unit and fill the spaces with other objects such as pictures, board games, deco items, etc. and for that it works perfectly. It is a bit wobbly so defiantly recommend utilizing the strap that comes with it to anchor it to the wall.

Sturdy bookcase

This bookcase is definitely worth the money if you are looking for extra shelf space. It was easy to put together IF ALL THE PEICES WERE LAID OUT ON THE FLOOR FIRST ! The directions are confusing so use your own good sense and it goes together quickly. I disagree with others who said it was junk. It is not a pretty piece of furniture but it was not meant to be. It has five deep shelves with plenty of room and if the heavier items are placed on the sides and on the shelves designated to hold more weight, there are no sagging shelves weeks later. It is perfect for den storage, kids rooms or garage storage for paper goods, etc. I am glad I purchased theses shelves instead of the more expensive ones.
