    • A. You can record H.d. with this machine. Through the antenna only you can do it. First find a show in H.D. then record it to the hard drive then use the hdmi out from the unit to your t.v. and switch the picture size on your t.v.to full. And you can burn the show from your hard drive that is in H.D. to dvd.record in hq or sp for best picture. Now when you play back the d.v.d that you recorded off the hard drive from your dvd player that has a h.d.m.i output or directly from the unit.just make sure the t.v picture size is on full size. I have recorded H.D. on it from a antenna and it came out good. And i burned the H.D. program to dvd and played it back using a regular D.V.D. player with the hdmi out to the t.v.

    • A. My experience so far (would like Wajo2's input on this# is that the Mag records OTA signals in the format it was transmitted #as anonymous indicated#. I checked the TV info screen as well as the mag info and it showed the same definition. But if recorded to disc, it went to 480p. Then you can use the progressive scan if your tv has the progressive scan option. The TVIX unit I replied on earlier in this post will record the full HD on its HD. Then you can put that digital file on your PC in full hd or in a network sharing server. But YOU ARE NOT creating a DVD in HD, only a digital file. The mag appears to record to its HD in full HD but there does not seem to be a way to transfer it to a digital file??? The TVIX will not play or write to a DVD as it has no player. So I use the TVIX for my network #NAS) audio/video head unit and the Mag for my cable DVR.

    • A. The Mag can only record in 480i because the DVD Std requires it. The Mag's coax circuit is an amplified splitter. On one path, it will pass an HDTV (720p or 1080i) signal through its coax in/out circuit so downstream components will see HD, but anything going thru the tuner or line inputs (the recording circuits) will be downconverted to 480i. The Mag can upconvert the 480i to 720p, 1080i or 1080p but it will have started as 480i. We got the unit for my mom. she lives in a complex where direct tv is sent to each apartment with no box. So I guess it acts like an antenna. ( Much like a hotel) All the Network channels are in HD but the upper channels like lifetime, discovery etc are not. We hooked up the unit and used her tv remote to change to the component. All HD channels are beautiful. The rest look horrible, lines thru them, blurry, etc. She can watch those channels if we switch back to the TV. None of those channels can be recorded. Is that right or did we miss something when hooking it up? We were aware those channels would not record in HD but we thought we would at least be able to watch them thru the component so my mom would not have to switch back and forth from the tv to the dvdr. Help or advice please!!

    • A. in reference to my original question, we have not been able to get all the channels to work on the component in either digital or analog. I have rescanned the presets under each of the 3 options. I did find out today that the set up at the complex works likes this... There are no boxes in the actual apartments (which is what I already stated) the way direct tv pumps the signals in is different than I would have suspected. They do not send the signals to one big box, then resent to the apartments. Instead they have a box for each channel the entire complex gets. i.e., box 10 sends only channel 10, box 5 sends only channel 5 etc. Is there anyone techy enuf to know if we should still be able to make this work?

    • A. It could be different modulation standards. I believe from your explaination they are using an antenna combined with satellite. Try a cable scan, if the other channels show up clear it is because cable channels are slightly off from the real OTA numbers. A real TV may be able to handle the slight change, but a tuner like in the Magnavox might not.

    • A. Unlike an antenna, DirectTV is NOT a broadcast service and your mom pays for their service as a part of her rent payment. As such, DirectTV controls bandwidth and content; hence, those premium channels are scrambled so that end users must either pay extra or, in some cases, purchase or lease from DirectTV or whomsoever they recommend, a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and as long as the apartment building owners continue using DirectTV, only the providers equipment will work. My statements may not be 100% accurate buy, you should get the gist of it. Hope this helped.

    • A. Only things I can think of are: 1. You did the "wrong" type of channel scan #Preset#. 2. Defective un it. Since you have such an "odd" system... DirecTV like an antenna?... you might have done the wrong channel scan type. The Mag is not like a HDTV that scans all channels, both analog and digital, in one pass and integrates them in sequence in the tuner. Whatever scan type you selected might have been "wrong" for your peculiar system. I'd try the other type#s# of scans and see if it works better. Otherwise, return the unit? Normally, a system with both analog and digital channels, which are only on cable... antenna channels are ALL digital... will show a diff. between the old, 20th Century analog channels and the new digitals, but they shouldn't have lines and blurriness... just a noticeable lower quality.

    • A. I currently have the old Magnavox unit that was a VHS/DVD - capable of dubbing in both directions, and even on my unit, I can record directly to DVD. In fact, I use the DVD, and DVD+R discs to record my TV shows instead of the VCR for a few reasons. (1) I can "reformat" the discs just as I could erase a vhs and reuse them over and over, BUT, they do not break down anywhere near as quickly as actual magnetic tape of a VHS does. (2) If the show ends up being something I want to keep it is already on a DVD and can be played on other DVD units, or on computers, laptops, etc. (3) Using the DVD, I can go in and clip out commercials and such from anything I want to keep around for a while.

We chose to hook this unit up with a splitter and use it and the cable box independent of each other. It's much easier to use the HDD to record whatever we want to record, and use the cable unit to watch live tv - also we found that using AV cables were much more successful and better quality than using an HDMI cable or a coax cable. We did find that the quality of signal was great even after using the splitter on the cable line - much better quality of picture and sound than the TWC cable box unit. Although we are satisfied with the price and service we received from WalMart, we found this unit for a few dollars less at Amazon - but unsure about the shipping policy from Amazon as well as tax rates charged. With Walmart, we satisfied if there should be a problem, we'll be able to take it to the nearest Walmart and get it replaced or refunded. You'll enjoy this unit - worth the money - and of course, Walmart's no hassle policy should give peace of mind to purchasers.

Excellent DVR. It's our second purchase (for the 1TB capacity) for the family room. We originally purchased a Panasonic from another store - BIG mistake. Our first Magnavox worked perfectly and it's been happily transferred to the bedroom. Pros - Quick set up with HDMI cord and once you get a feel of how to record, edit, etc. it's very easy to operate. It can record one show while you either watch another taped show or "live" TV. There is no need to remember to even "close" the DVR to activate. It automatically tapes any show that's been programmed into the unit. Taping can be made directly to the hard drive or a DVD. You can edit first, then transfer onto a disc for a hard copy, but with over 1,240 hours of taping time, there is no real need to use a DVD ever again! Only two very minor cons - Wished the clock/channel display was larger/easier to read and that it had a backup battery in case we had any power outages. We have had to reprogram our other unit when that happened.

For the right application this product performs very well. It is confusing at first, the remote leaves a bit to be desired, the manual is not friendly, but overall for a person with reasonable acumen for technology like this, I certainly recommend the item. I was hoping it would interface with my cable system better, but it did not. I now run a regular antenna to this for recording, and the cable to my TV for watching. My uses don't require recording much of anything from the wasteland that is cable TV, and 98% of what I wish to record is on broadcast TV. I do not want a cable-owned box or a TiVo subscription, and really just wanted a versatile VCR-type experience. This unit is one of the rare items that fit that bill. I have a good feeling for Magnavox products, and now that I have started using this, I have a good feel for this model. As I learn the DVD-recording capabilities and the dubbing opportunities, and use the full capabilities of this machine I know I will grow to like it even more.

The device has an extraordinary number of features and it takes some time to learn how to use a lot of them, but it will do some (to me) amazing things. So far I have just used it to access basic digital cable channels (Comcast will be going all digital later this month here and my previous analog access will no longer work.) I have programmed it to record some programs and play them back and it all worked very good, but since it was somewhat different from my older tape devices it took some learning to do. If you are willing to invest the time to read the extensive manual and practice with the device I think you will be amazingly happy with it. I just wish the manual would explain things in simpler language for a beginner in digital like me. I have it hooked up to cable, an analog TV, and an analog Video Cassette Recorder. Among many other things I'd like to do, I expect to copy some old taped information I'd like to save to DVDs.

Very easy to use, somewhat like my old Panasonic expect this unit WORKS without locking up! Very fast responding, although has the usual 2s delay when changing channels. Automatically writes over old shows one week later unless you mark them to keep, so you can forget about the harddrive filling up while away on vacation. Even lower-quality levels (there are 6) still quite acceptable viewing. At higher quality levels it is difficult to say if a show is live or recorded! Allows you to jump forward or backward a preset amount; e.g., FWD 60s (commercial skip), REV 15s (instant replay). On-screen info tells you where you are, date of recording, etc. Watch prerecorded show while recording another. Note: Like most DVRs, it records in "standard definition" (480) but upconverts playback so it looks like super HD (1080), keeping the file size small. Selecting recordings to view are easy with live action "thumbnails" and titles you can add for your favorite shows. Best feature: watch shows LIVE and use instant replay or pause button.

I wasn't too happy initially with this product when I found I couldn't pull in all the stations going through this tuner that I could with my TV tuner. I was about to return it when I decided to try upgrading my antenna from basic Radio Shack rabbit ears to a Terk HDTVA to see if this would help. This did the trick...I guess this tuner needs a stronger signal...and I even pulled in a few more channels than I had before. The functionality is exactly what I wanted and haven't had since owning a Panasonic hard drive recorder years ago. The picture is only slightly degraded from watching live shows in HD using the TV tuner and certainly watchable. I record everything in HQ mode since there is room for plenty with the 1TB hard drive. Yes, they could have made the HDD menu system better so you could search and find shows easier and there are a few other small complaints but overall, this is a good value and fills a need for recording TV shows for those of us who like FREE TV.

The Mag DVD set top burner works fine as a time shifter/DVD archiver in standard def video. I also use it daily for recording Performance Today and other audio content from the radio. This is my 2nd one, for downstairs use. My original, owned for several years, is upstairs and still working fine. Finding a DVD burner with a HDD is difficult these days. There are blu ray burners in Japan, but not in the US unfortunately so we are stuck with SD. I wish the remote for the upstairs unit was a little more responsive. The new one seems a little better in this regard. My one gripe is not so much with this unit but with the CEC (consumer electronics control) tech built into MANY home devices these days. When the thing goes into timer record mode, my TV set comes on, even if I am doing unattended recording. I disconnected the HDMI output to defeat this and use component instead which doesn't support this "feature". There doesn't seem to be a way to defeat it otherwise. I hate any auto feature that has no over ride! The manufacturers do the consumers a disservice.

This DVR has met all of my expectations. After I cut the cable and went to an over the air antenna, I lost my cable company DVR. This DVR is an excellent replacement for recording over the air TV. Programming is much like an old VCR - you have to enter the channel, start time and end time. There is no online programming guide - but there is no monthly fee either. You can pause live TV, rewind live TV, etc - just like I could with the cable company DVR. This DVR only has 1 tuner so you cannot watch one channel while recording another channel. You can watch recorded TV while recording a new program. I have a splitter on my antenna cable - one cable goes to the DVR and the other cable goes directly to my TV. That setup allows me to watch one channel using my TV antenna input while the DVR records a different channel using the DVR antenna input. I have an HDMI cable connecting my DVR to my TV.

I have only had this DVR for a few weeks. I had a Panasonic DVR and was used to the edit procedure with it. Since Panasonic doesn't make DVR's for the US anymore, I reviewed and choose the Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, with 1TB. It is very similar to the Panasonic DVR. It has an excellent picture and easy to operate. The only exception is that at the beginning and end of recording you have to marl a Scene start and end mark. The Panasonic DVR just eliminated the beginning and ending after being marked. However, the Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, with 1TB automatically combines scenes, where as with the Panasonic DVR you had to go through a combine procedure to combine chapters. All in all the differences are off setting. I would recommend this DVR for someone who is familiar with editing recording. It may be a bit challenging for someone not use to the DVR edit procedures. However, it is worth the time to to learn. The 1TB of storage is a big plus. I do recommend the Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, with 1TB.

I actually like this product, but I was having problems with the wrong shows recording. After being gone a week I realized the pattern of what's wrong. If I setup recording #1 at say channel 8 at 8pm to 9pm and then setup a show #2 on channel 50 at 9pm to 10pm, the 9pm show records on show #1's channel. Watching show #2's recording says channel 50, but actually records channel 8. It seems to work OK if there's a break between recordings. So, to record shows from different channels in consecutive time slots you have to record to 8:59 or start the next recording at 9:01 in my example. This is something that should have easily been caught in product testing. I hate to think they would sell a product on purpose with this perceived flaw. Otherwise, I love the HDD to DVD transfer rate with the particular configuration - it's an acceptable quality of video for the benefit of speed dubbing. Wish I could record while watching a recorded show though.
