My wife and I have been using an ice machine for several years because we got tired of messing with ice trays... besides, the ice trays took up valuable room in our refrigerator freezer. We had previously bought a refurbished machine on eBay, but we discovered the machine had issues. It was loud (compressor?) and the metal ice bucket was a magnet for mold. When the old one went kaput we bought this ice machine online from Wal-Mart. It is a little bit smaller than our old machine, but we soon learned that it makes ice at a rate that is nothing less than amazing. Also, it is so quiet that you can only hear it when it dumps ice into the easy-to-clean plastic bucket. We love this machine and use it about twice a week. We have even started putting large freezer bags of ice in our big freezer for fishing trips and outdoor barbeques. You can buy a bigger, more expensive ice machine but I doubt you will find a machine any better than this one. An added bonus is that it doesn't take up much counter space. Again, we love it and give it our highest recommendation.

We are building our own home and needed a better, more robust source of ice for drinks during hot weather. A compact refigerator with ice cube trays just didn't work well. This Magic Chef MCIM22 unit is fantastic. The water well holds about a gallon and makes ice amazingly fast, just as the specs say. From first startup, I timed 10.3 minutes for the first batch, which includes about 1-2 minutes of startup initialization. Following cycles were 7.8 minutes each. These times are for small cubes. Medium and large sizes seem to take several minutes longer and are not that much larger. Let me explain the sizing: The "cubes" are actually like thick-walled thimbles formed around 9 freezing "fingers" that stick downward into a tray of water (see photo). Medium and large sizes just let the ice grow thicker walls. The most efficient freezing occurs in the early stages when the walls are thinner, and actually, drinks chill faster with lots of small cubes. As others have said, noise is fairly subdued. Compressor and fan operate with a hum similar to any standard refrigerator. Air intake is from the rear, and warm air vents out the left side, so those two sides need several inches of clearance. I think the right side could go nearly flush against a wall, despite the instructions for clearance on all sides. The rattle of cubes being dumped every 8 minutes is louder but not objectionable (unless perhaps it is located in a small conference room). The features are quite easy to understand. Water-empty and ice-bucket-full have dedicated indicator lights. One caution: the sensor for ice-bucket-full is a shiny, temperature-sensing peg about twice the length of a pencil eraser located in the ice bucket near the top right corner. If you park the ice scoop near or over that sensor (see photo), cubes will not contact the sensor when full, and overfilling and/or jamming will very likely occur. This seems like a good way to damage the unit. For the energy-conscious buyer, rated load is 1.9A, or about the same as two 100-watt light bulbs. When the ice bucket is full, electric consumption is essentially zero. As a dedicated ice-maker, this unit is superb, amazingly fast, and pretty simple to setup and operate.

My old ice maker finally gave out and the new one I got from Wal-Mart is wonderful. It makes ice quicker than my old machine and also a lot more of it. I would highly recommend this ice maker to anyone that want's to save money.

    • No, you should not put tea in the ice maker. The small solid particles will over time clog the machine, and you probably won;t be able to make regular cubes again w/o tea smell or taste.

    • You may want to stick with standard ice trays for tea ice. Putting tea, even a lightly colored tea will likely stain you ice maker.

    • Tea stains, I would not want to chance that. It would take it longer to make ice if you put warm tea in it, I probably would not do that anyway. Might want to stick to the just good old fashion iced tea.

    • this just makes ice. If you put tea in it then it would probably stain the inside and I don't know if there'd be a contamination issue. The acid in the tea may affect components of the ice maker. It wasn't designed for that purpose.

    • I think you could make "tea ice". It probably would leave some flavor in the unit for any regular ice afterwards, since there are some water lines and pump inside the unit. The interior is white plastic like a refrigerator, so warm tea would probably be bad for it. I'd expect it could crack with warm or hot liquid.

    • This machine's purpose is to make ice cubes only. You can make ice tea and hot tea in separate utensils and then add the ice cubes to the tea.

    • I'm sure you could use any flavoring or drink and it would freeze it however you are looking at possible staining the plastic interior. When I first purchased mine I ran mild bleach water thru it to remove any plastic taste it may have and I'm sure you could do the same for stains. However I would not use a strong solution as it could seap into the plastic and an after taste could be present. Hope this helps.

    • I assume you could use "warm tea" but bear in mind that this will raise the ambient temperature inside your ice machine and will cause your new ice to begin to melt prematurely. You could let some of your first ice tea cubes dump directly into your warm tea (by removing the ice basket) and this would cool you tea down to a nice cool temperature. Then replace the ice basket and you are good to go.

    • Yes, why not? But it does need to be plugged in and the ice will melt if the machine is in the heat.

    • it recommends inside. I wouldn't leave it outside or in rainy weather. Recommended operating temperature is 50F to 100F. It say it may not work well over 100F. I haven't tried that temp, yet. I suspect you could put it on a table next to an outlet outside in the shade. Sunlight will probably fade the case and cause the unit to work much harder to keep making fresh cold ice. I wouldn't leave it outside all the time or at night. It's only 25 lbs empty.

    • I am not an expert on the product but if the item was on a counter and not far away from an electrical outlet that accepts 3 prong plugs, I don't see any harm. I do believe it was made for indoors.

    • Why Not? Just keep it out of the direct sun because it is not a cooler - it just makes the ice and you need to put it in a cooler to keep it.
