Bought the smaller version of this pot on-line after looking at the 6-qt. in a Wal-Mart store. The day it was received I cooked a 3 lb. roast with potatoes, carrots and onions in the same pot, then made gravy from what was left. Pot perfomed wonderfully. Even heating, nice searing ability for the meat, and kept the roast and vegetables at just the right simmer for the time required. Two days later, used the pot to make a gumbo--great results. Within the same week, used the pot three more times. It has become my favorite. Wife used it to make chicken and dumplings the next week, made bean soup in it two days later. It's a great pot. Now considering getting the 6-qt. Pot cooks well, cleans easily and is attractive. Thanks Lodge (and Wal-Mart for a great pot at a reasonable price. We also have some Le Creuset cast iron that is much, much more expensive, but does not perform any better.

This Dutch Oven is made by "LODGE" -- a company that my mother always considered to be one of the finest makers of cookware. The price on this particular Dutch Oven was the best I could find anywhere -- plus... I liked the ease of ordering and having the product shipped FREE to my local Wal-Mart store. Looking at the style & workmanship, I am delighted with this item -- the only reason I gave it 4 stars on durability is that I just received it about two weeks ago; but my expectation is that it will prove to be very durable as the years go by.

My first dutch oven and real happy with this aside from the plastic knob. Replace it for a couple bucks at your local hardware store it's cheap and your good to go. Got this to bake KN bread and it works great. I was worried the 3qt was too small but it's the perfect size for KN bread and i hope it encourage me to cook more at home and eat healthy.

Does food stick or easily come off. Is the lid cast iron too? Thanks
    by castironer
    • The lid is also cast iron. I use mine mostly for baking bread & I have not had a problem with it sticking. I do not use metal utensils with it.

    • Food easily releases since it's porcelain enamel. I've made rice in this, and even when it seems to want to stick a little, after it's cooled, for some reason it will release from the interior. Also make no knead bread and just drop the bread in with no oil or spray and the loaf drops right out of the pan. The lid is cast iron too. With Lodge, you do not have to season the lid and pot rims. This is black matte porcelain--some people think its raw cast iron that needs further seasoning, but it's not. This pot is ready to go out of the box.

    • The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season the cast iron. The surface is smooth and food should come off easily with minimal to no sticking. The lid is also made of cast iron and porcelain enamel.

    • We just washed it and used it.The lid is cast iron and food does not stick to it very easy to clean,Did say to pre-season which was easy

    • It is not preseasoned because it does not need seasoning. Cast iron cookware requires seasoning to prevent rust and maintain the smooth non-stick finish it will acquire. HOWEVER, when it is coated with porcelain, it is protected with the porcelain finish and does not need the finish obtained with oil in pre-seasoning. A small portion around the rim of the pot and lid APPEAR to be unfinished, but Lodge explains that those, too, are finished and do not require seasoning. The food comes off/cleans up out of mine BEAUTIFULLY..it really is pretty much non-stick. And "yes" the lid is also cast iron.

    • I have the larger size; on here now thinking of purchasing the smaller 3-qt. The 6 qt is VERY heavy. For someone with little arm strength, I'd probably go a different route, as I'm sure that even the 3-qt is heavy at least in comparasion to other materials. I love mine, but my 80 yr old mother who is fairly frail could never manage.

    • it's heavy. Someone with MS may have trouble with it. You have to pick it up, not slid it. It ways a good 5lb with out food in it.

    • The "how to care for" says you can put it in a dishwasher, but it is recommended that you do not. I hand wash mine.
      by Lucitude
Was this answer helpful? (0) (0)
    • You could probably get away with putting it in the dishwasher, but I highly recommend hand washing. It cleans really easily due to the porcelain enamel. The dishwasher will probably dull the shine over time and other items can bang into it and scratch the enamel, maybe even chip it. It's such a great little pot, so I don't mind the few minutes it takes to hand wash. I have also left it for longer periods with soapy water if food's caked on, and also used baking soda for any interior staining common with lighter colored interior enamel.

    • Although dishwasher safe, hand washing is recommended. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant but not chip proof.
