  • A. you need to connect to a wireless router in order to get a signal, if there is a signal nearby that isn't protected, you can use it then

  • A. Your router must be connected to your internet source...then you use this to make your computer wi-fi (wireless) and you can use it anywhere within the range of your router. No wiring needed.

  • A. A wireless router will allow you to set up a Wi-Fi network in your home however you do first need to arrange for the internet to come into your home either via a phone line (DSL or dial up) or broadband. If you opt for broadband the cable company will typically supply a cable modem for a monthly rental fee on your cable bill. If you live in one of the few areas in the USA that has FIOS (Fiber Optic Lines) the set up & fees are similar to cable. If you do have internet in at least one room in your house you can use a router and USB stick to get it from the room it is in to the room your PC is in without lots of wires. I hope this helps.

I have cox high speed internet and several computers throughout my home (one is hooked up to the cox modem and then most of the others piggyback a connection through my Linksys hub (one wired and the other 2 wirelessly.) Anyway, I got another desktop computer and it did not have a wireless adapter installed & was too far to hook up to the modem or existing Linksys by cable. So, in order to hook it up to cox I would need an additional modem for which I would have to pay about $40 bucks a month. Instead of the extra expense each month, I purchased this wireless network adapter to find' my existing Linksys network and allow me to get on the internet. It plugs into an existing USB port and comes with installation software that finds the network automatically. It works perfectly! Super easy to install and never a connection issue yet. I use this particular computer for business and needed something ultra reliable and this has been perfect so far. If you have a laptop or desktop computer and need it to connect to an existing network via wireless connection, this is exactly what you need.

Works with Windows 7 64bit!

After much research & 3 wireless adapters that didn't work with my new Windows 7 64bit system I purchased this with hesitation however it worked beautifully! The install CD contained the driver, it picked up my existing Wi-Fi network and I was back on line after thinking I'd never get back on line wirelessly again! During the research phase of choosing this product I became concerned that I would need to be certain I got version 2 however the one I got is version 1 and it is working just fine! I would not be on line typing this review without it being fully connected!

I've had Cisco Linskys adapters before and they have worked well. I decided to purchase a dual band adapter when I added another comp to the local network. It was easy to install and connected fine, except that if your comp was set in sleep mode, once it awoke the adapter disconnected. You were then forced to re-set the adapter. This issue is obviously a problem enough for a number of users since Linskys own forums have many users trying to troubleshoot this issue. Their tech support was unable to help very much. Furthermore its constant reseting also continually froze my mouse pointer on the screen. It not only was annoying, it was particularly troublesome if your a gamer like me. I wanted to like this unit, but it proved to annoying to cope with for very long.

I only gave it 4 stars on value because I have found cheaper options for wireless since. But i have to admit it does what it says it will do. It's easy to setup and gets great signal and as long as the internet is up, it is ready for what you want to do.

Poor range

It works OK on both bands but the range of coverage is disappointing at best. I compared this with the internal Atheros-based wirless G network card in my low-end Compaq laptop and the Linksys adapter consistently showed lower signal strength. I realize the laptop has larger internal antennas but it's also 2+ years old; I guess my expectations were too high for wireless N on a USB stick. Also to note, I found that even though the 5GHz band is wide open, the signal seems to be affected much more by physical objects than the signal on the 2.4GHz band. In other words, the signal isn't as strong on 5GHz as it is on 2.4GHz and you will likely have even less range.

Got this product and it worked great for a week with the Linksys software. Then, one morning after booting my computer, the software would no longer connect to the network. Trying to get help on their forums just had someone telling me that the software wasn't compatible with XP Service Pack 3 (except it worked fine with SP3 only a day prior). Calling their help line ran me around in circles with Linksys eventually saying that they couldn't help me. I'm running it now through the XP software and getting maybe 2-3 out of five bars and pretty lousy performance for games and other higher bandwith stuff. I'm staying far away from Linksys products from now on -- this one was a HUGE disappointment.

When installing, be sure to uninstall a previous wirelss device first. In this case I had Linksys G and switched to N. After a few hitches, I figured it out. Maybe there's another way, but I'm not a computer geek :) Now everything is perfect. I like that you can put the USB directly into your pc or use the base with the wire to get it out of the way. I bought a second one for my laptop and just use the USB. In this case, the laptop had a wireless G device, but I didn't have to uninstall anything. As I said... not a computer geek. Everything works great.

Both Microsoft and Linksys list this product as fully compatable with window 7 64 bit, but it does NOT work. Instead the install fails and Linksys suggests all types of "workarounds" none of which work. The tech finally admitted they are aware of a technical problem and do not have an ETA for a resolution. Even their support site advises you "Don't Give Up" I returned it for a Belkin and it worked immediatly. If you buy this keep your receipt!
