What is the difference between this and the &quot;kit&quot; that costs a couple dollars more?

As A Gift

Got this for my 10 year old Son and he build a bunch of working contraptions. We had the motor and battery pack from a Lego Star Wars AT AT Walker which now needs to be "put back together"! When he ran out his own idea's he went to You Tube for more designs, I recommend this to anyone with mechanical abilities and knowledge of safety as the motor and low gearing has plenty of torque.

Lego Action Contraptions

My five-year-old grandson is Lego crazy, and he can build these contraptions from the instructions easily. We like that 16 different items can be built from one Lego set.

Great Lego Product.

My 9 year old son asked me to order this for him. We got it and he hasn't stopped playing with it since. It has some very unique pieces. There are great directions for building a lot of different toys. It has kept him busy for several days now and sparked his imagination to build more unique contraptions.

It was a birthday gift for a 7 year old and she loves it.  You have to think and follow easy directions to make really cool inventions.  Great gift!

Gears and stuff

This book is fun and interesting. It gives a lot of great invention ideas and even comes with parts to build. It's great for all Lego fans. Comes with parts you can't normally just buy in stores.

Can build 16 differant items with this lego set.

This is the low cost and good introductory to the Lego Technic System which is the prerequisite to building robotics on the Lego Mindstorm NXT/EV3 systems. If you can easily build these *contraptions* on your own then you should be able to build other Lego Technic-Mindstorm sets/kits. These *contraptions* introduces you to a variety of mechanical devices - most will go through all 16 builds in one day but there are enough parts to build other things as well. However, Klutz.com also has an *extra 105 brick* set to supplement this kit for about $12 that makes this set a bit more interesting. Several years back, I bought this for my nephew now he is in his elementary school's Robotic Team. This kind of toy is timeless.

Unfortunately this fantastic book came totally damaged. Bent, dented and dirty! Walmart decided NOT to package it in a box, but a flimsy envelope. Really disappointed that it was so damaged, I was not able to take it home. I have reordered, so let's see what happens. If second time is a bust, I'm done.
