it does come with an example book but I recommend buying a extra book or two the example one is not really a book my son loves the book called animals around the world

Does the Tag Junior come with at least one book?

Yes you still need the books unless you buy this in a bundle.
No you do not need the pen this is the pen for younger children the tag pen is for older children.

The Tag Junior Scout Book Pal comes with an included sampler book, If I Were.., which has 16 activities and over 70 audio responses.
You do not need to buy the Tag Reader, but may purchase seperately more Tag Junior Books.

yes you still have to buy the books. you buy the books and the tag jr device and you activate your device at leapfrog.com once there they give you a library of all the books that work with your system and you only select the books you bought the system will only hold 5 books at a time though but you can always go back a switch the books up the device then will download the audio to the books you bought. once downloaded the child uses the books as it reads the story to them

This LeapFrog LeapReader Junior Book Pal- Scout is adorable. Not only is it adorable but it is perfect for my 3 year old who loves books and wants me to read to him all the time. This allows him to place "Scout" the little dog on top of each word and the dog Scout says the words aloud. This enables him to see the word and hear the word. Hopefully, he'll learn to read at an early age and I think this is a great way to start and it makes the child feel more independent. The child actually feels they're doing this on their own and it's great to do lap time reading each and every day. It's very important because it not only creates a bond between the child and parents but with this fun technique it really gets them further interested simply because it's fun. Not only educational but fun and teaches them independence and they feel as if they're reading the book on their own.
It's vital to take 10 minutes out of our busy days as parents and use this reader. It will truly make a difference in how they learn. I studied Early Childhood development and I believe in this product.
Also, there are other books that you can purchase separately so you'll have a small library of exciting books.
This package comes with one book which is great. I recommend purchasing the kit and trying it out with your child and if he/she enjoys it; which they will, simply because they're reading it with you. Once you've read the book multiple times it may be time to purchase more books so that they don't get bored with the same book. It's a VERY reasonably priced reader and the additional books are also reasonably priced. Great product! I'm all about educational toys and games and this is a great one!

Great Reader and so much fun!

I got this at Christmas for my 18 month son. He LOVES this thing. He is playing with it as I type and enjoys hearing his name as he turns it on and off. The size is perfect for his little hands and very durable! He has dropped it down on our hardwood floors with no damage done to Tag. I find it easy to load the books on and I like that it shuts off automatically if he doesn't turn Tag off. It did take a few minutes for the initial account set up with Leap Frog but now it starts up as soon as I attach it to my laptop. Even though the back can be hard for me to line back up, I'm so glad the usb is tucked where he cannot get his fingers too. Thank you for a great product!

I bought this for a 2 and a half year old boy along with the Cars, ToyStory, and Dora Tag Jr. books. This is his first Leapfrog toy. He quickly learned how to turn it off an on. He likes to stick his finger in the hole in the bottom where the "eye" is but this did not damage the toy. His favorite book is Cars, which is about shapes. He will grow into the other books soon and likes to explore with his Tag Jr.
The carry case makes an excellent bag to keep all the books and toy in the same place.
TIP: I downloaded all the books onto the Tag Jr. before giving them as a gift. This way, the toy is ready to go the moment it is in his/her hands.

The Tag Junior Scout Pal doesn't have enough memory for all the books. My daughter will have to pick and choose the books that Scout will read to my grandson. When I went to the Leap Frog website, I saw that it shows that you can put all the books on the pal...well, it doesn't. I bought several books, but can only put in a few so my grandson can read with his pal, Scout.
It has nothing to do with Walmart - got a good buy on the books and the pal - Leap Frog needs to make more memory for the pal.

My son who is 2years old....... loves to play with this product, he kind of plays too much with the off and on button....... but he still adores it.......

Great educational product

This is a great toy for a child who can't quite read yet but loves books! It certainly can't replace being read to my a real person, but my 2.5 year old daughter loves it. We bought the set if short vowel books to go with it. Great value for a great educational toy!

My only issue is the screw that holds the battery strips out VERY easily. It's plastic and not sturdy plastic. Use a quarter instead of a screwdriver.

My goddaughter loved this Leapfrog Tag scout Pal! it's a great educational tool for kids to read along with tag scout pal that speak what's written. She loves the songs as well. The only thing it to remember this that this only comes with a sample book!

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 18month old son I love it the books are great the device is easy to work and its easy to download the books on to the device the only issue I have with the device is it does shut itself off he could be in the middle of a book and it just turns off I don't know if its just my device or all of them I emailed leapfrog and am currently waiting on response

Big hassle to work around computer firewall in order to download stories onto device. Leapfrog Web page won't let you access files unless Areas of virus protection are turned off on computer. No thanks.
