Unlike previous reviewer, the opening is kept small to keep people from trying to shove a tree down it. I found it easy to use and was great for all the dry material i wanted to chip. I moved it from location to location in my garden and chipped away, then spread out the chips. It is not meant for green material, like vines and lives bushes, but rather dead and dry yard debris.

I read review on this product before I bought it. The reviews are mixed. But if you read them carefully, the negative reviews tend to be either it is broken right away, or not doing the job it is not designed to do. My thought is that since Walmart has 90 day return policy, I am not afraid if it breaks right away. As for not doing a good job review, I decided to test it out myself. First of all, I set my expectation straight. This is designed to chip small branches up to 1.5 in. It is not designed to shred leaves. If you keep this expectation in mind, you won't be disappointed. So far I only used it for two days. I liked it so far. It is light -- I can easily move it around. It is small, I can easily fit it in the areas that I need mulch. It is easy to operate -- just turn the switch on and off. It is quiet compared to more powerful gas powered chippers. I live in a quiet neighborhood, so being quiet is important to me. But most important, it is safe to operate since it is not so powerful that scares. In fact, I checked out a larger Troybilt gas chipper befpre, it is so loud that I was afraid to lose my hearing. It also made me feel unsafe to operate. I read that it works better for freshly cut woods than dry woods. My experience is that it cut dry wood just fine. But I avoided chipping 1.5 in dry sticks so far. I did use it to chip fresh branches up to 1.5 in. It worked fine. It did get stuck a couple of times. I just had to turn off the motor and pull up the sticks and try again. Although it says it won't shred leaves, I feed the fresh cut branches full of leaves through, it chipped the branches, and shred the leaves to pieces without a problem. The leaves are not shredded to fine pieces, but small enough to me. It is easy to clean -- just open the top part and tip the body to its side to dump the shredded woods/leaves, you are done. To me, this is a good fit. I only need it to chip away the small branches. For larger branches, they can be either used as fire woods, or dumped in the transfer station in town -- they are very easy to put in the trunk as long as you cut them to short pieces. The small branches full of leaves are the ones that are hard to transport in a sedan. Basically, if you have a small yard with some trees and bushes that you want to keep them from out grown, this is perfect. If you have a large land with a forest to chip, this is not the right one.

This is a light-duty machine. Depending on the nature of the branches you want to chip, it may handle the 1 1/2 inch diameter or not. I found that it chipped freshly-cut shrub & tree branches with ease, but had a lot of difficulty cutting the same type after they had been cut a week or longer (after the leaves dried). From now on, I will only cut what I can immediately shred. Once the blade becomes dull (2-3 hrs--depending on the material you're cutting), flip it or change blades. I've been trying to resharpen the edges, but have had varying results with this. The center hole of one blade malformed during use and all attempts to resharpen & reuse it have not been successful. The other blade seems to be resharpening ok (but not good). I am on my 3rd blade & have pick-up load of mulch. I'm very impressed by this machine. I have used similar gasoline engine chipper/shredders. This machine is portable--I chip where I need the chips to lie & can move it very easily. It's easy to trouble-shoot & service--my arthritic hands can manage the knobs & allen wrench & I don't need to be a whiz with small engines. I have used it continuously for hours at a time without breakdown (except for blade changes). I haven't used it on my aged compost pile, so I don't know how well it will work there. I just wish the blades were better, lasted longer.
