Review by Library Journal (2009-06-15)

STARA popular Spanish-language media personal finance guru, Serbia here offers a four-step plan to financial independence. Written in a straightforward, easy-to-follow manner, the book outlines solutions to many of the financial challenges that affect today's American family. The author addresses Latinos living in the United States, and he serves his audience well, offering culturally relevant examples and advice. With each of the four steps-Survival, Security, Accumulation, and Distribution-Serbia includes useful spreadsheets so that readers can plug in their own numbers.

This may feel like 20/20 hindsight, but it does allow one to reformulate financial plans. The lesson to be gained is that, above all else, planning and informed decision-making is paramount to improving one's personal finance. While at first glance the advice may seem obvious, e.g., save more, read the fine print, many people will likely benefit from Serbia's back-to-basics reminder. Highly recommended for public libraries.

Book description

In these tough times when millions of people do not have savings, they live paycheck to paycheck; times when they don't have control of their finances, and stress about debt or even lose what little they have, it is necessary to start building a solid base and start looking towards achieving financial freedom. In this personal finance self-help guide, Xavier's goal is to help those who are not ready to face financial crisis as the one's we are living during these hard times.

We are living one of the greatest economic crashes in decades, with jobs and investments lost, foreclosures and bankruptcies up. Millions of Hispanics feel useless in the midst of this financial chaos, and are overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. However, these are also times of opportunity to start fresh and put order to one's personal finances and build solidity in order to withstand another economic tsunami.

Four Steps to Wealth starts from that premise, and teaches in a refreshingly direct and sincere manner, how we can build our personal finances from the bottom up. Step 1, concentrate on what is necessary; Step 2, protect what we have, prepare for the unexpected and obtain security; Step 3, cautiously plan investments and a retirement plan; and Step 4, reach the desired independence. He walks readers step-by-step on a path towards financial freedom.
