  • A. No wifi. The newer model LG-BD570 has wifi built in. Some say you can use a usb wifi dongle plugged into the 550 to get wifi, but I don't know if you can.

  • A. There seems to be a huge misconception of WIFI ready. WIFI ready means you can plug a USB Wifi adapter into the player to achieve a wireless connection. Just because it doesnt have WIFI built in doesnt mean it is not wireless capable....HENCE WIFI READY. Anyways, yes this player is WIFI ready with the use of a Wireless USB adapter. Check with LG to find out which ones are compatible.

  • A. No, it uses RJ45 wired connection. They have other wireless models (but they probably have less throughput). I found my set-top box had a rj45 that acts as a hub, so check and see if you have a free connection somehow.

  • A. No. You must connect using an ethernet cable or use a Samsung Wireless LAN adapter which costs around $80. If WI-FI is a must, get the BD570 which is wireless.

Can't search NetFlix at this point from the player, but it has tabs for genres and suggestions like a movie you liked.

  • A. Yes, you'll need a wired Ethernet Internet connection and a Netflix account. The menu is easy to use and the quality is as good as Netflix provides. Ie, older movies are a little grainy (better than VHS, which is when they were made) and newer movies look quite good. Netflix just told me that they're working on adding closed captions and 5.1 sound at this time, but that's no reflection on the player.

I didn't know what to expect when I opened the box of my new Blu-ray player from LG. The unit is sleek and much smaller than I expected. My old DVD player is much larger and bulkier. One of the reasons I decided on this Blu-ray player was to minimize the number of cables needed to connect the unit to my TV. I went from five cables (3 composite video cables and two audio cables) to one cable (HDMI). The installation was very simple and the unit was operating within 5 minutes. All I can say is "WOW!". Even my DVDs look great! Since I have an LG LCD TV, the units sync'd up automatically, which makes controlling the TV from the player a snap. Blu-ray movies look so real that you'd swear you were on the set! I am very impressed! In my opinion, for the money, you cannot beat this player, not to mention the fact that it came bundled with a 6 foot HDMI cable and a Blu-ray copy of Avatar! For entry level Blu-ray players, you cannot ask for more!

I have had this player for about 3 months now and am very satisfied with it. I purchased it mainly to instant view from Netflix, and am very happy with my purchase so far. I got this player instead of the next one up because I don't need wireless. It works just fine with my older TV, although it took a while to get the picture corrected (I'm stuck at the very lowest resolution the player can display; anything else results in a double picture). No problems, loads and plays quickly. I only wish that more network content was available, such as Hulu. I have two minor complaints: the Netflix interface doesn't allow you to search for a title directly, rather you can just look thru various lists. The other services have an alpha search option, but not the one I use most. The other irritation I have is that when starting up the picture looks wonky until the player fully loads all setup settings -- shaky, double picture -- but then it's fine once fully on. Style is good, and remote easy to use.

I bought this model and then returned it thinking I could get a better player for the same money. I purchased a Panasonic from a electronics store because it was the same price and got better reviews, after I hooked up the new Panasonic Blu Ray Player the picture was very close in quality (a little better with the Panasonic) but right away I noticed that the black bars top and bottom were much thicker with the Panasonic. I felt like I was watching TV through a picket fence. Just to make sure I went back and got the LG BD550 again from Walmart and plugged them in side by side. The LG provided a little bigger view, which was more comfortable for me plus you have a adjustable zoom. Nothing on the Panasonic, your stuck with the picture. I'm keeping the LG even thought the menu is cheesy and construction seems cheap it's still has more to offer.

I purchased an LD550 HDTV and said to myself my cable couldn't do it justice. So i purchased the BD550 Blu-Ray player by LG. I hooked up the network cable and HDMI cables, with the Blu-ray Avatar, and was like; omg. I was stunned at the performance of the TV and Blu-ray. The clarity was amazing. The ease of use was what caught my attention. With the Simplink, the TV recognized the Blu-ray right away and changed to the HDMI port without me even touching the TV remote. Yes, I love that. I become even lazier, hehe. At any extent the networking capability was great. The other draw back was the usb being in the front of the player. I would perfer the key to be in the a hidden compartment. It doesn't look good having the front bay open down. And it provides opportunity for breaking it if someone bumps into it. Also they should expand the onboard memory so that you can use the BD-Live features out of the box instead of having to use a usb flash drive. But overall this is still a great buy and deal.

The on-line features available on this player are pretty cool and many of them are free (Youtube and Pandora). If you subscribe to Netflix, you can use this player to stream movie directly on your TV. The player is very easy to use and navigate. Oh yeah, it also plays movie really well too (either Blue-ray or regular DVDs). Great product for a reasonable price!

Very pleased with LG BD550

In April 2010 I bought the LG Blu-ray Model BD550 disc player for $164 at Wal-Mart and am very pleased with it. I did research on Blu-ray players and found only two that fulfilled my requirement of having a Zoom button, a slow motion button, and a Marker and Search button on the remote itself without going through layers of menus. The LG BD550 and a JVC model had these functions on the remote. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and others did not. The Marker and Search buttons allow the user to make up to nine marks in a movie as you watch it and to go back to the scene(s) you were interested in. The Search button when pushed displays the length of the movie and the numbered markers you made. Just press the number and the player goes back to the scene you wanted to see again. Some might say, “But the green button, which is on all Blu-ray remotes, will also mark scenes in movies.” Not true. The green button will mark on movies recorded in high-definition on Blu-ray discs. I have discovered that not all movies recorded on Blu-ray are actually of high definition. Such as “The Phantom” that has come out on Blu-ray. The green button does not work on it. But the Marker and Search buttons on LG’s remote does. On the Blu-ray movie “Avatar” the Marker and Search buttons do not work. The green button marker does. If you play the old movies on DVD that are not on Blu-ray only the Marker and Search buttons will work on them. Not the green button. Yes, the LG BD550 does up-convert movies on old DVDs and they look very good. I also checked to see if music on a CD plays, photos on a CD and a flash drive using the USB connection will display. They do. And the Zoom button works on photos and movies. I have a Vizio 42 inch, flat screen, high definition TV, model SV420XVT. Very nice. A pleasant surprise was the fact the LG Blu-ray remote buttons for turning on the Vizio TV and controlling its sound automatically worked out of the box. I did not have to program a code into the LG remote to control the Vizio TV. I did not test the Netflix option on the LG. I prefer watching a movie on a DVD because I have more control over it. Including putting it on my shelf to watch again later. The INFO Display button on the LG remote displays language, subtitles, title/chapter, multi-scene option, and video type in a vertical display on the left side of the screen. I would have preferred buttons on the remote to activate or change the functions. The display disappears by itself in about 4-5 seconds if not acted upon. I would like to have a one line, transparent display at the top of the screen to show the continuous length of time expired and the full length of time of the movie. Overall I am quite pleased with the LG BD550 and recommend it to others.

Having never owned a blu-ray player before, my review may be a bit naive. However, I do know that I haven't experienced any lockups or glitches, that my purchased and rented movies, both blu-ray and DVD, play without issue, that my streaming from Youtube, Netflix, and Pandora is flawless, that the load time isn't annoyingly long, and that I paid a pretty low price. I've been using this baby for about two weeks with a wired powerline connection and I'm still pleased.

ok didn't buy this online but from the Walmart store-Guess I can still write a review. I went to WalMart to get Samsung they had on sale but they were gone. After chatting with friendly employee there she pointed the Sony out but a lower end model than I'd like then pointed this one out.. $94 dollars and love my LG home theater system.. So why not. Best choice i've made in while I think. In 15 minutes this was hooked up and streaming Netflix, Vudu, Cinemanow and doing Youtube. Has some good apps and not real sorry I lost the blockbuster app from Samsung (even tho few movies were purchased). This seems to stream much better than my Samsung did and less having to reactivate my account to the blu ray player. For $94 bucks this is a steal I think. I love the way sounds so much clearer too connected to my LG theater system even tho its a cheaper one.. but man sounds good. For $94 dollars I'd recommend this to anyone out there searching for a blu ray player. This is awesome deal and streaming Netflix for only $7.99 a month plus some tax.. can't beat it. Merry Christmas to all :).
