Quiet, Cold, Has a Water Drain (MUST READ)!!!!

Quiet, Cold, Has a Water Drain (MUST READ)!!!! If you are looking for a Window A/C this is the one you want (LG 10,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner, model LW1012ER). Believe me, read this full review before you buy any Air Conditioner!!!! Let me start out by saying this LG unit I ordered online replaced a Haier Brand 12,000 BTU unit which I purchased last year from Walmart. I actually paid around $20 more for the Haier unit, probably because it was 12,000 BTU vs. the 10,000 BTU of this LG unit and Haier was the only brand of A/c they sold in-store around here. Both are almost identical in physical size. The Haier Unit was LOUD, I couldn't hear TV with the unit screaming near me in the living room. The air was cool, but the room never got too cold which meant the Haier unit was running at max capacity all the time just to keep up. Last but not least most Air conditioners including the Haier have a SEVERE design flaw, they do not have any drain for the water to drip out the back! Instead the new units are built to allow the water to build up and pool inside. This creates a big problem. The fan in the back of the unit will hit the water and fling it all over the side of your house creating a dirty, moldy mess after many months of use, and also rotten wood if you have any wood at all around your window (inside or out) etc. It will get so bad water will actually start coming INSIDE your house as well, not just a little water BUT A LOT OF WATER ON HUMID DAYS! And yes we did have the unit properly leaning back, not forward. We are not idiots. All The newer units hold A LOT of water inside with nowhere for the water to drain (except for the LG units which do have a drain!). I am told the manufactures designed the units like this on purpose, their thought is the water inside will help cool the unit to make it run more efficiently. They say it is supposed to do that!! It doesn't work like they wished it would... The LG Unit is great! As I mentioned above it is 2,000 BTUs less than a comparable unit of the same physical size and price, but that doesn't matter. It actually cools BETTER, it is not whisper quiet but even with the fan on HIGH, as high as it will go I can still hear TV just fine! On lower settings it isn't much louder than a normal floor fan we use. By comparison the Haier was WAY louder, I couldn't hear TV without cranking it up much higher than I do now. Finally I would never ever again ever purchase an A/C unit that did not come with a drain, and LG is apparently the only brand who makes A/c units with a drain anymore. I Live in SD and we have HIGH humidity. We installed this unit replacing the Haier and we have NO water leaking inside the house, and no water flinging all over the side of the house from the fan. It also cools better, the air is colder, the unit is quieter, and again, NO LEAKING WATER! It just drips out the back like it is supposed to if you install the included drain!!!!!! Just to give you an idea of how much water an air conditioner can create, I placed a 5 gallon bucket under our new LG A/C drain outside. It has only been 20 hours since I installed it and the bucket is 1/2 full. So just where do the manufacturers of other brands of A/C units expect 2.5 gallons of water to go everyday if there is no drain hole? They want all that water to be flung out by the fan all over your house, and also some of it drip inside your home??? Stick with LG and avoid water problems!!! Don't make the same mistake as me, Just order and LG unit right away. Good Price, Easy to install, cools very well, quieter than other units, and NO WATER PROBLEMS! 5 Stars!

We needed to buy a new air conditioner. So, I went on line and studied all the brands. I have purchased LG Appliances before and have been well pleased with them. I was so glad to find out they also made air conditioners. Walmart.com was the best price. It was delivered to our home fast, easy to install, made very well and runs quiet. We are very satisfied with our purchase.

Of all the window and floor air conditioners I have had, this is the most efficient and quietest unit of them all. Where other air conditioners of equal size have run constantly, this one seems like it hardly ever runs when it is in auto mode. It also has an excellent dehumidifying feature which will take out excessive humidity even on days when you do not need the cooling. It will not replace a dehumidifier on cooler days or when the humidity is below the humidity level it works on. The drain plug is great if you do not like the water sound or have the unit near something you do not want water splashed on all summer. I have not seen that it affects the efficiency that much to just drain the water. For the Price and after reading all the air conditioner reviews I could find, I found this to be the best 10,000 BTU air conditioner currently available, and very quiet for a window unit. You can still hear it, but much quieter than any other I have used.

I ordered the ac unit in Feb, and we waited until May 1 to install. My husband installed it, in less than an hour. He tested it, before using, in the garage. He seemed ok with it. He installed it. And, we took it for a test. It is impressive, as to how quiet, this ac unit works. I used it last evening, while watching tv, and, I could still hear the tv. The design is very compact, not bulky, and, you hardly see it in the window. You have the option of energy saver, or, just let it run, as is. We use the energy saver. Summers in Texas are relentless, we have to prepare in advance. This was part of the preparation. I also purchased the 6,000 BTU unit for my husband's office. I think we are well-prepared this summer.

Gets a large room 30' X 20' like a meat locker if you let it. I live in Southern California and it can get hot here, make the room cool even with 4 computers running at all time and the outside temp above 90.

We are in need of A/C more quickly than our defunct central air can be repaired. Because this is hopefully a short-term solution, I'm hoping we won't need brackets, tools and ladders to get this mounted and ready to use. Thanks in advance!

  • A. We installed the unit very quickly. The box included absolutely everything we needed, but you will need a long screwdriver for the installation. We needed to apply a silicone sealant to weatherize some small gaps, but nothing other than that.

  • A. Install is simple and quick all from inside. Kit is included - afew screws for accrdion sides. No outside brackets - not needed. Bracket clips on window sill and screws into sill and sash secure it. It should be balanced on sill. It will drip condensate. Use included drip nipple and if needed a tube or hose to direct drip. If you want to use hose - not included - get it prior to install so you can attach when mounted.

  • A. I was thinking the same things when it arrived, because it is heavy. But it is a window unit. You can install it from the interior and you don't need to put any kind of exterior brackets. This unit is 22 inches wide. If you have a regular double hung window, it should fit. It took me less than 15 minutes to install and it is working great!

How does this unit drain off access water? Drain hole? And where is located? Or evaporation?
by Aisha 7/23/2013

  • A. The instructions indicate that if we notice water dripping from the unit we should drain it from the outside. The unit includes a small drainage tool for this purpose. I haven't had this issue come up yet.

  • A. In the very back on the unit on the right side (when looking at it from the back) there is a small plug which you remove, then you replace the plug with a small included drain spout which sticks out maybe an inch or so. The water then drip out of the drain hole. If you like you can attach a hose to the spout as well (hose not included). Most air conditioners do not have drains anymore which create a big problem. Believe me, get this LG unit and avoid all water problems that the so called evaporation units create. I had a different unit before and had many water problems. Water can not evaporate fast enough when it is humid outside. See my review for more info!

  • A. Hi, the fan at the rear of the unit picks up the water with the blade tips to create a spray on the condensor cooling fins/coils on the very back of the unit. I guess it adds cooling to the condensor as the water evaporates. Additionally, there is a plug at the very rear of the unit which you can hook up a drain hose to. I didn't use it but you may want to if the noise of the fan tips hitting the water collected at the bottom of the unit is a problem for you.
