Hi I had to write a new review after seeing the negative ones here! We bought this for Christmas for our now 7 year old girl several years and houses ago. It is solid REAL wood approx 1/4" thick, not particle board, we do have enough knowledge to know the difference. It did take us a while to put together Christmas morning, but it is very sturdy and my 4 kids play with it often. My oldest is an autistic, not gentle boy, unless your kids are going to just TRY to be destructive and break it, it should not...Over the years only one piece has broken, the little box that fits in the fridge door to be the water and ice maker. If I had the time and desire I could easily fix it. We've moved several times, have never had to retighten anything, and this kitchen still looks very nice and is played with so much that this year for Christmas all of the food and dishes are being replaced! Oh, and several play tables even solid wood ones haven't lasted like this kitchen, so we are getting a new one of those too. We do have the wood toaster that is in the ad photo and my picture below, it DOESN'T come with the kitchen, it is super cute, also several years old, even though it's more expensive than other options I think it's a better choice since it still works and others are long gone, and still makes great toast if you have a some imagination, or a stomach for wood grain toast! Your kid(s) and you should be pleased, and this will stand up to time and many, many, many tasty treats and meals! I just went down to take a current pic, I looked for worn spots, or chipped off paint areas, but I COULDN'T find any. The second pic is of one of the magnets enclosed in a small wood stopper to hold the oven door closed, (I wish my expensive furniture was built like that so my toddler wasn't always bringing me magnets!) it also shows the hinge for the cabinet door, and the colored screw caps on the inside, I remember being impressed with that. The screws for the back or outside are painted the color of the wood they belong to, but the ones for inside of the play area have paint matching caps to look even nicer and protect the kiddoes. Seriously I think she was only 3 when we got this for her. Enjoy!

This kitchen is AWESOME! I bought my daughter one of the more expensive plastic kitchens last year for her birthday and after a year I was sick of it. So, I started looking around and I found this one. I was amazed at how much storage space this kitchen provided, and how realistic the burners and faucet were. Those plastic kitchens don't even compare to this piece. The refrigerator door is just my 3 year olds size and she don't have to bend down or reach up to far. I looked at the lower priced kidkraft kitchens and I would not even consider them because for a few extra dollars you get so much more!

This is a BIG kitchen. I got this for my 1 year olds birthday. She needs a steppy stool to reach the sink and stove top but she still plays with it and her brother , who is 8, can play with it with her too so if you want a kitchen that will be usable through multiple ages or children and is very hard wearing this one is a good value. A tip for construction, the bottom goes metal pieces UP tword the top. The pictures don't show which way to turn it, also there are some bolts and nuts which go in the sides of the yellow cabinet, be sure you have those in first before you tighten the counter top on.

    • No, the cabinets do not close with magnets. They have a little plastic hook that goes between two plastic wheels. Hope that is a good description of the mechanism!

    • No, they close by a plastic gadget. Similar to a safety latch one would use to keep little ones out of a cupboard, is what I would compare the closure to. No magnets!!!!

Does the surface chip and scratch easily with wear and tear or is it pretty durable? Also, I've read some other reviews that the burners are painted on and that they've started to wear off over time...have others found that to be the case too? Thanks!
    by LizGurg 12/10/2008
    • The surface seems very durable to me and the burners are not painted on.

    • Hello all, I would say VERY durable! Ours is almost 5 years old and with the way this company carefully designed the one we have I can't believe they would be making a poor product now. Ours has been moved to one storage, and two houses and it still looks as great as it did the Christmas morning we put it together. The burners are seperate painted circles attatched to the stove and still look new, the paint on the whole kitchen has not chipped, scratched, worn, etc. and this kitchen is played with almost daily. Hope this helps!

    • The "painted" surfaces seem very durable. The almost feel like formica. No worries there. The burners are not painted on. They are painted, but the are actually individual pieces that have been permenantly fixed to the stove top. Very realistic looking.

    • there is specific information in the manual of what to use to clean the surface, so it does not fade. gentle soap and warm water, i believe was the recommendation.

    • It's very durable. I put this kitchen together today with my five year old and four year old "helping" and there are no scratches to be seen. The manual says, "Each item has been painted with a very durable paint that is both lead and chromate free and safe for children."

    • my daughter plays with this daily and I think that it is really durable. She is not the most gentle with it and it looks just as good today as it did when Santa brought it last Christmas. I have not noticed any paint fading or chipping off at all.
