    Poor materials used, great idea

When I first got the chair it was great! I loved it, and used it on the weekends for soccer games. But in less than a year, it's no longer useable. The problem: There are two 5" plastic strips that connect the canopy to the frame. They have completely shredded, both sides. OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. While it may seem wonderful when you first get it (it is a good idea), don't plan it lasting more than one season.

    Canopy Chair

    Customer review by Harvkal

    5.0 stars by Harvkal

As you can tell by the year of my birth, I am 76 years young. So far I have only used the chair once, but it was enough to tell me that I had made a fine purchase. It was easy to transport because of the backpack style straps. The beach I use has very steep steps going from the parking lot down to the beach. It was easy to transport the chair to get to the beach. Once on the beach the chair was easy to set up and very comfortable to sit on. Closing the chair was very easy leaving the beach. All in all, I am very satified. H. Kalfin

Heed the negative reviews. Pick something else.

First, let me say that my wife and I really wanted to like these chairs. We talked to folks that had the older model Swimways/Kelsyus canopy chairs and they loved them. But in short, the new "premium" model is flawed. Heed the negative reviews. Pick something else. First the positives. The concept is great. The canopy is the case. It folds down and snaps in no time. Easy to unfold, easy to pack, reasonable weight, comfortable seat position. But the flaws are fatal. The killer for us were the seams between the mesh and seat fabric. The mesh is basically a window screen. Well when you cut a screen, you get little stiff, sharp "hairs" along the edge (try it, you'll see). These sharp hairs poke through the cloth side of the seam. The seams with these stiff hairs poking out scratch the livin daylights out of any exposed skin that comes in contact with the seams. And where do the seams run? Right up your legs and along the small of your back. If you plan to be out in warm weather or wearing anything but long pants with a tucked in shirt, then forget it. That flaw right there was enough to drive us to return them. Next is the mesh itself. I suppose they used it for airflow and cooling. Seems logical. But, with the sun at your back, the mesh is actually HOTTER than cloth. The sun just beats directly through and onto your skin or shirt. Better to have a double layer of opaque cloth there. Lastly while at a baseball game we had the good fortune to run into another couple that had bought the exact same chairs at BJs (as it turns out for significantly less than Walmart) two weeks earlier. They had the same issue that many other negative reviewers had - the cloth near the front of the chair ripped apart at the seams. This happened to their first chair, they returned it, got a new one, and it had just happened to their replacement set. They were headed back to BJs to return them after the baseball game was over. We used our chairs for only 2 baseball games. We did not yet experience the ripped cloth issue, but the other couple's experience, plus the numerous bad reviews elsewhere, gave us ZERO CONFIDENCE in the quality of this chair. Hey Swimways/Kelsyus, go back to your old design. Putting seams right at the stress points is wrong. The seams introduce a weak point, are poorly placed and the mesh does not serve its intended purpose.

    • You can not 'tilt' the canopy. It is either up or down. You simply move your chair to provide the best shade according to where the sun is.

    • The canopy - already attached to the frame - can be pulled up overhead and attached securely to the frame with a built in clip - or it can be folded down behind the chair. It does not tilt.

    • We just bought this chair. The canopy does not adjust, but always seems to keep at least your face out of the sun. We also used a towel over the canopy for more shade when the sun was not in the "right place." When watching sports, you cannot always put the sun behind you.
