What a great set of K'NEX. Roller-coasters are always a fun thing to watch and play with. There are many parts so make sure that little children do not have access to them. The pieces are smaller than the regular K'NEX sets so these won't exactly work as an add on set, but would still be fun to make things. This set came in a cardboard box and plastic bags. It would have been nice to have resealable bags or a plastic box to store all of the parts. It came with a very detailed booklet to make the project intended. K'NEX are great for the very imaginative mind. The possibilities are endless when time and space are available. My children have really enjoyed playing with K'NEX for many years and we just have 2 sets with no intended project, but with this set it just makes it funner and better to be able to make something bigger and with battery moving parts. I am sure there will be hours of fun with this set and the others we have already.

great toys for older children

The K'nex Roller-Coaster building set is so much more than just a toy. It is a learning project using engineering skills and discipline in reading directions.
First, this product is made by K'Nex which is a leading American educational company who's statement is, "Building Worlds Kids Love" and this building set does not disappoint.
This set is intended for children ages 9+. I assembled it with a child I babysit for who is 7 years old and he did most of the assembly with no problem.
I would like to note that building the roller coaster is a large part of the fun. In fact, the manufacturer encourages making the building a family fun adventure. The assembly process for us did take an entire day.
The directions are a 39 page large booklet with colored pictures. In the book the actual parts are depicted in their appropriate colors. This color coding and colored parts list makes it so much easier to identify the parts needed for assembly. The major components are connectors, chain and spacers. All parts snap together, some easier than others.
The chain is motorized which sends the car through the track when completed. We had such a thrill watching our finished project. Fortunately, the child has a play room where it's able to be stored fully assembled and played with. I'm not sure where I would have put it in my home with limited space.
There is also the opportunity to play around with the track sections for different designs which we have not done yet.
This set was a lot of fun to construct and play with afterward. The price was more than reasonable knowing how many hours of enjoyment it brings. I would highly recommend it.

More than just a "Toy"

Our youngest Grand-son had a similar, but smaller version of this and plays with it constantly.We will be giving it to him for Christmas and are sure he will be entertained by it for quite a while. I am amazed by the quality of it.

Great fun

I enjoyed this product a great deal. It did provide its own set of challenges in the fact that the directions were very very vague and were comprised of pictures and little to no words to describe the process. As an adult it took a great deal of focus and concentration to build the product in the instructions. after completing I would not recommend it for younger children but 12 and up should be very capable of completing this project. It was made of quality pieces very standard of K'nex sets i have had in the past. A big bonus was after assembly this set fits well with other sets I have expanding my building potential. This would make a wonderful gift for the young one with an interest for building and creating things with their hands. It leaves a great bit of possibility for the user to add creative twists to make the project their own and build again and again in new ways to entertain for hours!

Very Versatile and enjoyable

My 10 year old son likes to build things so I thought this K'NEX roller coaster building set is perfect. I want to be upfront that we have not completed the building set, yet. We're getting there! But I wanted to get the review out there because I think there are a lot of positive things I've learned from this experience. I may do an addendum in the future when this is finally completed.

First, there are over 600 pieces in this building set. So be sure to have a lot of space. I would suggest getting a few zip lock bags to hold the pieces as you open each bag. Otherwise, it's easy for you to lose pieces.

The box says the final height of the coaster is 2.7 feet tall and there's over 19ft of swirling tracks. It recommends this for children 9 years old or older.

My so loves to build Legos so I thought this was a good transition for him. But after spending about 30 minutes on his own, he came to get me because he was having trouble looking at the pictures and then snapping the pieces together. I went to help him. The manual is nicely done in color. But I can see where it maybe challenging for a child (and also for me as an adult) to see some of what they want you to do. The challenge is that the pictures don't just depict 2 dimensional structures (e.g. building everything on a flat surface). It actually ask you to snap pieces together in 3 dimension (so you have one plane/side of a "box" and then it has pieces going 45 degrees diagonally across the center of the box). Anyhow, once you realize this is what it's telling you, then the picture makes sense. But if the user can't see that, then I can see where it would be frustrating.

So our first hour was spent on getting visually oriented. After that, it was a matter of following the directions and snapping pieces together. The pieces are typical K'NEX plastic pieces that can snap on. A few pieces are tight, and may require an adult to help.

We've spent about three hours so far on this and I've really enjoyed the time spent with my son and seeing him starting to see 3 dimensionally. I think this is a very good beginners set to help the visual-spatial skills of the child. But I also think it would be helpful to have the parent with the child to make sure the first experience is a positive one and not of frustration. We look forward to spending more time together in the near future to finish this project.

Overall, I would recommend this to a friend or family member.

K'NEX Roller Coaster Fun!

This is the first K'Nex construction set we've ever built. My Son spend pretty much the entire day to construct most of it by himself. There's a ton of very small pieces (definitely a choking hazard for younger children) and some are very hard to snap/slide into place and at times there was frustration during the building process. The booklet does give nice enough instructions, but: Attention to details is necessary. One wrong connection and the whole thing will collapse. At some point in the evening I helped out to finish the construction and we were all ready to test the Coaster only to find out that we had the chain looped the wrong way. Took another hour to fix that, but then it ran nicely. The motor, which requires 2-AA batteries (not included) does make some noise. It's also not exactly a small Coaster, so if you're planning to keep it assembled, it will require some room to store. I wouldn't recommend carrying it around a lot as the pieces can come apart easily when lifted up. My suggestion to make this toy even nicer would be to be able to put some figures inside the car to take a ride on this Coaster. Although my Son has creatively found a way around this: He implemented this K'Nex Coaster like an amusement park into his Lego City and simply taped one of his Lego-Figures on top of the Coaster car. So even though this Construction set tested his patience during the assembly, he really likes it and I'd consider buying more of K'Nex sets in the future.

Challenging to build, fun to watch

Building this roller coaster will provide hours of fun! There are A LOT of pieces, too many I would expect for the average child. I would recommend this for a child 10 years or older with parents who are willing to help if needed. Also fun for the parents to build, but a bit tedious with over 160 pieces in total. We are still working on it, so I do not have a final picture.

Lots of Fun, Lots of Pieces

The K'NEX Thrill Rides Typhoon Frenzy Roller-Coaster Building Set is a neat toy, but not for everyone. It is complicated to put to gather with many small pieces and pictorial instructions. It will take you several days and several sessions during those days to assemble. The instructions pictures can be difficult to see without a magnifying glass, as some pictures of parts look very similar. It is useful to have some tape available to hold parts together as you assemble other parts the Roller Coaster to the parts you have already finished. Once it is together the tape may still be needed as it is used it will try to come apart in places. Once running it is interesting to watch. If you take it apart keep track of all the pieces. I used zip lock bags to keep them separated and together. It would get a higher score if the instructions were clearer and the parts would stay connected better.

Me and my 2 sons (8 & 10) tried putting this toy together over the course of a weekend, Friday – Sunday. I’d imagine we had about 6 hours in it, with 1-3 of us working on it at a time. My 10 year old son is really good at putting together Lego system sets – including the police and fire station big ones – and after 2 hours of work on Friday night he gave up – completely – with only about ¼ of the set built. Sunday afternoon I started in on it, and my 10 year old helped, and my 8 year old was adept at piecing the green track together as me and the 10 yr old could quite get it done.

A few things about this – it should be labeled MINI K’NEX – because – 99.5% of the pieces are mini pieces – not the ordinary K’nex you might be used to. Additionally – the instructions and diagrams really stink. Most of the time the color of the pieces is plain old incorrect (white is actually clear, red is actually orange, etc.). Furthermore – there aren’t enough pictures/diagrams of the pieces from different angles to actually figure out what is going on. My only recommendation is to situate the large piece you are working on exactly as pictured to try to figure out what to do. The gray connecters and blue ones that slide together are especially tough to grasp – as well as the connectors that slide through the green track – and under the black chain guides.

Once we finally got it all together – we gave it a try – and the chain came apart. Once we fixed that – we noticed several places that were wrong – that didn’t have enough clearance – and several places we just had to improvise fixes for. One green track piece at the bottom actually twists upside down when installed – or you’ll never make it back to the chain drive!

Once I rigged it all to finally complete a lap – we had continued problems with pieces coming loose with the rail car passing over it just once.

My wife’s comments summed it up best – all that work and that’s all it does?!?! You don’t get much thrill from it working after you’ve seen it a couple of times! Not like Lego’s that have little people you can play with and have adventures with.

Long and short – not worth the time, money, or effort as there is very little reward to be had by getting it built! I would only recommend it for experienced K’nex builders over the age of 12+, definitely not 10 or younger!

M'eh - A Lotta Work for a Little Reward

I am giving a mixed review on the K’Nex Typhoon Frenzy Building Toy. On the positive side, the roller coaster is awesome, well-designed, works beyond expectations and came with clear, concise instructions. On the negative side, the kit has over 600 pieces; very intricate and time-consuming to build. Although the box claims the kit is for 9 year olds and older, it took two highly educated, very patient adults (a physicist and a judge!) five hours to put this coaster together! I can’t imagine the average kid, teenager OR adult assembling this toy without throwing their hands up in the air and feeling highly disappointed by the complexity of the construction. A toy such as this, involving much time and expertise in building should be sold in specialty shops, such as a science discovery or building kit hobby shop, not a Walmart or department store where the packaging is misleading to say the least.
