    Great For Puppies!

    Customer review by cherkel

    5.0 stars by cherkel

I purchased the 8 panel pet pen for my 8 week old golden retriever puppy. Since he is into everything and cannot be left alone for a minute I needed something other than his crate to contain him - like a play pen for dogs. That's exactly what it is. I put a blanket and toys in there and he can play by himself or sleep when I need to get something done and can't watch him every second. I would never leave him completely unattended however - realize that puppy can still chew carpet or do other damage to the floor area and once they get bigger they might even be able to jump and tip it over. He is now 11 weeks old and about 13 pounds. He occasionally jumps on it and it doesn't move so I would imagine for a small adult dog, they would probably not be able to tip it. It has rubber feet which is great for a hardwood floor like I have. It comes in panels that are held together by giant plastic "pins". If he has an accident in there, I don't need to crawl through the door, I can just pull one of the pins and open up the pen to get in there and clean. I wouldn't consider this something that you would move around daily in your house from one room to the next. Once put together it would take 2 people to move it because it's awkward to move. You can take it apart but that's kind of a hassle. I just keep it in the same place all the time. It appears to be well made. The gated door is held closed by 2 little levers - once they are in place there are screws to tighten the lever so that the door is quite secure. It's plenty big and if it's too big you can always pull one of the panels out and not use it. This would be great in a house, in a yard, camping etc. Just a great, safe way to contain a smaller size pet and especially a puppy. I ordered this on a Sunday night and it was delivered to my house Wednesday - free shipping! So don't fret if you need something in a hurry, it comes quickly! Lastly, I shopped around at my local stores (I live in a city) and could not find anything this height in a store. After shopping online, Walmart had the best price of anyone so save your time and just buy it here.

We have 40lb beagle who suffered a torn ACL injury. He has to be contained most of the day for 8 weeks. A typical kennel was just too small for him to remail happy contained. This pen is perfect! Large and roomy, easy to assemble and most importantly easy to disassemble so that if you need to move it from room to room or take it on vacation, camping etc., you can do it with ease.

    • Absolutely!!! I have a 35 lb English Bulldog Puppy that figured out how to tip the 8 panel model over within 2 days of me owning it. I'm now in the process of trying out ways to anchor it in the room he stays in while I'm out of the house. The individuals that are answering "no" obviously do not have a pet that is either smart enough to get out, or just has no inclination to do so. If you have a motivated pet, they can tip it.

    • I have a terrier mix dog, and she's had no issues. The panels are hinged together well, so it's not physically possible. I had worried about her jumping over it. But, it is tall enough that she doesn't even try.

    • I think a big or medium sized hyper active dog could knock it over.

    • A big dog could. If you're placing it outside, I would recommend ground-hooks. If inside, well . . . you're on your own. I don't think I'd put a Bull Mastiff or Great Dane in one of these! Use your own judgment; you know your dog better than I do. A small- or medium-sized dog could not tip it over.

    • If it wanted to, probably so. When outside, I 'pin' it in 3 areas with tent pegs in the ground. When inside, fill a couple of gallon jugs with water and tie to a few spots evenly spaced...that should make it very difficult to tip or move.

We dont have a lot of room in our apartment, but our pet jumps really high so we need more of a 4 panel pen 34" high.

    • I have this and you can remove or add panels.

    • You can use as many panels as you want. They hook together with a pole that goes down through brackets on each side of each panel. Very simple to use.

    • A 4-panel pen would be 24 1/2 inches square. Make a model of the outline of the pen with string or masking tape. Is that large enough for your dog? My opinion is that it would be a bit confining except for a very small dog.

    • Each panel is a separate piece and has hinges on each side. Set one panel next to another, nesting the hinges together, and slide the pin down to connect them. To dismantle, just pull the hinge pins. You can leave two panels connected, closing them like a book for easy transport.

    • You could use any number of panels from a small 3 panel triangle to all 6 in a square, rectangle or hexagon. You can buy an extra set of two panels too.

    • You can use as few as you need to as long as they are fastened together on all sides. You could even use three panels and make a triangle pen, but the puppy would have to be awfully small to be comfortable in such a small space.

    • Yes the hinges only tilt in one direction to form a square or stop sign shaped pen. And yes, they could most definately be used as a room divider if tucked in behind some furniture.

    • I think the panels could be used as a room divider with proper support. The panels work best for us by all being hooked together into a sort of circle b/c our Frenchie is rather exuberant. When hinged together, the panels bend all the way toward each other one way and about 1/2 of the way if you were bending them back to back.

    • I think they could if you can figure out how to hold them up. Yes the hinges only go on one side. The hinges are on the right when looking at the door.

    • Room divider - no. No way to attatch it to the wall to secure. Will fall over. Hinges to swivel in both directions.

    • The panels can be used as a room divider for a small dog. I have used three panels, set up shoji-screen style, to keep my pup in the kitchen while I'm in there. I braced one end between the refrigerator and the cabinets. The other end was just butted against other cabinets. The panels can swing from 0 to 260 degrees.

    • The hinges are not made to go into two directions, but they do fold backwards a bit. I brake it up all the time to give him a corner of my bedroom as he likes to be in there with me and he's still chewing around so I have to limit his access to "chewables". This thing is really easy to take apart, you pull a rod, and that's it. Put the rod back it to assemble 2 panels. My 5 year old nephew could do it.

    • I suppose if you could brace them with something like a chair or slide an edge behind the fridge of something then they would serve the purpose BUT they are not self supporting and when connected they will not turn a full 90 degrees backwards because of the way they are manufactured.

    • I would not use this product as a room devider , if used improperly it can cause harm to your pet, and yes the hinges only tilt one direction
      by missthrift7/24/2012
Was this answer helpful? (0) (1)
    • If you have something to attach them to at each end that is sturdy, they could probably be used as a "fence." The panels are firm, not wobbly, and not heavy, so should work ok if the ends are firmly supported.
