We used a little more than a bag. Look inside for the line to fill it to. You decide when it gets near the max line.

Here's the reasoning:  The sand bottle is about two feet high.  In the middle is a measuring stick, tells you the minimum and maximum amount of sand.  I just got mine together yesterday.  The 50 pound bag of sand did not reach the minimum on the stick.  All the water in your pool goes directly into the sand bottle - to be filtered through - then back into the pool.  The less amount of sand in your sand bottle, the less water getting filtered through the sand - and the more sand in your sand bottle, the more water getting filtered through the sand.   Hence, about 70 pounds of sand should put it close to the max on your stick.

How much sand do I need to buy for this pump.

Get rid of the pump that came with the pool. This one takes its place.

2) not that I know of...check with a pool store. Wally sells pool water salt so I am rather confident a filter works for either one.

This is simply a filter, it is not a replacement for chlorine or any other pool cleaner. For salt water, you would also need to purchase the salt water system. Well worth the investment.

Do you still have to use the pump that comes with the pool, or does this product do it all?

Are you sure you are using the correct button.. it isn't intuitive.

I have not used the timer at this time. I just got mine hooked up this morning. Please post what you found.

We just bought this pump and it is doing the same thing. We set the timer for 6 hours and pushed the on/off switch to the timer side. We let it run over night and when we got up this next morning it was still running. We are having to turn the pump on and off manually every night.

I just installed this filter lastnight. Set the timer for 12hrs, It didn't cut off. What could be wrong?

We set up our new intex pool using well water, only to have it turn coffee with cream colored after adding chlorine. We spent hundreds of dollars on chemicals trying to get the iron out of the pool. After trying for almost a week, we ordered the Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter. Once it arrived, we got it all hooked up in a matter of 15 minutes, and running. We ran it constantly for 3 days, only adding chlorine, and ph minus to the water,and back washed frequently. I was so happy to wake up on the 3rd day to crystal clear water! I honestly didn't know if this was going to be the answer to our problem, and really thought that I was going to have to empty the pool and start all over again. This filter is awesome and well worth the money! If you have well water, just save yourself the trouble and go get one of these right from the start!

If you have well water, this is the pump for you!

The pump that originally came with our pool just wasn't big enough to handle the size of our pool and never seemed to work correctly. We were constantly having problems keeping the pool clean. Now that we have the Intex Krystal Clear Sand Filter pump our problems with having a green pool or buying the filters have ceased. Actually after figuring the cost of the pump vs the cost of the filters, the pump will more that pay for itself the first year!

Great for 20' pools

We bought this halfway through summer after buying and setting up the Intex 22'x52" pool. The filter that comes with the pool is a cheap paper cartridge filter system and I felt like it never got the pool completely clean. We added this sand filter after I saw the price drop online, and it is so much easier! No more spending $20 at a time for cartridge filters. (Intex really should just offer this pump with the bigger pools!!!) We also have the Intex Ozone saltwater system that I bought local from someone. Together the water has stayed nice and clean. I have not had to shock the water since I bought the sand filter. (I had to shock it 3 times with the old filter).
Set up was ok, just follow the directions! This pump is also much more powerful and really circulates the water! Does just what it says it should do.

Keeps pool clean, saves money!

Filter is up and running. This filter is simple to operate. Watch the DVD that comes with it. The timer is sweet: 2,4,6,8 hour cycles. One knock is its a bit noisy. Also, if using on summer escapes pool the 1 1/4 hose connectors will not matchup, as the intex is 1 1/2 inch. Had to order some adapters to make it all work, but no fault on index. Extra 30 bucks was worth it. Could not find the sand at wal-mart, had to get that from a pool store. Love seeing all the nasty water when back flushing. Good bye paper filters!

Good bye paper filters, hello crystal clear water!

This is the 2nd pump I have had to buy for my pool and I was shocked at the price when I realized it came with the sand filter, cover, hoses, gauge and literally everything. I've bought piece parts over the years off the Intex store directly to know that a pump alone costs 150 and just the top cover with the handle off the sand filter is a $60 value itself. This doesn't even include hoses (and yes the rubber water-tight connections are included).  Even though I only needed the pump I know within the next 2 years everything else will need replaced so I'm storing it all in the shed

Great Price for combo!

This product was very easy to setup, but for models made after 2013 do not contain the plunger valves or B adapters, you would need to call Intex to get them. Otherwise it is working great. We used one night and it already started cleaning out pool. had to stop due to severe weather. Plus side, no more filters (especially since A type is hard to find).

Great upgrade

We have a 22ft round intex pool. We could not get it to stay clean and algae build up wouldn't go away. We were gonna take it down but decided to try a new filter. 
Best decision ever! Very easy to assemble. Uses about 70 lbs of sand. Which will run around $20.00 but lasts 5 years. 
Very powerful! Cleared our pool in a day. Now we only have to run it for about 4 hours or less per day. And no filters to rinse. Just vaccuum and backwash the dirty water. 
Highly recommended, and you can't beat the price. Good quality, very durable.

So much better than a cartridge filter

After recieving pump I realized that I needed the adapter to hook hoses to the input and output connectors since I have a smaller pool. Would have been nice to know this so could have ordered them at the same time and not have to pay extra shiiping to rush the item from the intex website. The $6 part cost $22 to get it here before 4th of july. But it all works great now.

love it but needed optional adapter

We purchased for our 18x48 Intex Easy up pool. The sand filter seems to be doing the job but we had to purchase additional hose adapters for our pool. I would have been happier, considering the amount paid, if adapters would have been included or if it was noted that additional items are required. I assume this is designed for the metal frame. We are also having to buy 2 valves which were not included.

So far so good, but...........

I do not recommend this pump to anyone. After spending an entire weekend troubleshooting why this pump continually pumped sand into the pool, we gave up. It was a lot of labor and wasted time. Yes, we followed the DVD precisely, and yes, we made sure to buy the correct filter sand. This pump was defective right out of the box.
