If you have never had a portable ice maker, you need to understand that they are not refrigerated Once the ice is made and falls into the ice bucket, it starts to melt. The unit is insulated so the ice lasts for hours and what melts gets reused to make other ice cubes. Portable ice makers make ice best when the air temperature around the unit is cool, as in an air conditioned room. Outside in the sun, the ice will take longer to form and melt faster. It is also best if you use cold water rather instead of room temp. water. I usually use cold water, keep the ice bucket out of the unit and then allow the first few loads of ice to dump down into the water to help keep it cold. When the ice in the water is gone, I allow a few more loads to dump down into the water. My old ice maker, a different brand, had a small metal bar that would get cold when the ice bucket was full and the unit would stop making ice. After you dumped the ice out, you would have to keep your finger on the bar to warm it up before it would start making ice again. This unit has a light sensor. As soon as the ice is not blocking the sensor, the unit starts making ice. That's a really nice feature. I have not had this ice maker for very long, and in fact I bought two of them, but I had both of them making ice for several days in a row to test them out and they both did well.

So far so good. Takes up very little counter space vs other models, & also the shape of the ice produced holds form/doesn't melt as fast as others (which I never even considered until I noticed the difference between how quickly store bought melts vs this). All & all, happy with my choice. Just a note- bought one through Amazon 1st as a Christmas gift. Great price, but defective. Amazon refunded all but, a little bit of a headache & the cost was actually lower through Wal-Mart (capacity lower, but unless you own a restaurant...) In addition if I have a problem, Wal-Mart is down the street...no S&H. Very satisfied

I'm so glad I invested in this ice maker. It is so perfect. It sits right on my counter top and now I have ice whenever I want it. It makes ice quickly and makes quite a bit with just a little water.

    • They're about 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch. I actually really like the size of the little one. The machine puts them out very quickly. They're a nice, hard consistency, too. Not mushy.

Igloo Portable Countertop Ice Maker Model #ICE102-WHITE Does it recycle the melted water?

    • Yes

    • Yes. I turn mine (in my office) off at night, and the ice melts back into the reservoir. I turn the machine on ~7:45am, and have enough ice for a drink by 8:15am. I leave the machine on all day, but once the tray is full of ice it stops making ice until that ice has melted and then it makes more again.

or it needs to turn off after certain hours? My regular refrigerator doesn't make ice. I'm looking to buy a compact ice maker that works like a regular refrigerator/freezer. How often does it needs to be cleaned or replaced the water?
    by an anonymous customer 4/6/2011
    • No, the basket needs to be emptied fairly often and the water will have to be replenished after four or five baskets full. You will need to stay on top of things because the little machine is surprisingly fast and will make enough ice to last all day in a reasonably short time. Put it in a plastic bag and store it in the freezing compartment until you need it.

    • it will keep making ice unless the ice bin is full or if it runs out of water. i fill mine up 2 or 3 times a day but we use alot of ice.

    • Replace the water about once an hour if kept running. I have been running mine over 12 hours a day. A light comes on when its full of ice and needs to be dumped out and a different light comes on when its too low on water. You press a button to turn it off.

    • I bought this for the same reason and it can stay plunged in 24/7. And with it making ice cubes every 7-12 mins I am able to load up ziplock bags and put them in the freezer to stockpile for later use.
      by ladyas1/1/2015
Was this answer helpful? (3) (0)
    • No. It will run continuously until you turn it off. It will have period during which it is not making ice once the collection basket is full. Since the collection basket is not a freezer, the ice will eventually melt back into the fresh water reservoir and be re-frozen then deposited again into the collection basket.
      by Reno8950212/12/2014
Was this answer helpful? (4) (0)
    • It has a water reservoir that you add about a gallon of water and it makes ice until the ice bin is full and shuts off until it is about half full and then refills the ice bin. Unlike a refrigerator freezer ice maker, this does not stay frozen. The ice machine is well insulated, but, within a couple of days the ice melts and returns to the reservoir and new ice is made.
      by rmoorez12/13/2014
Was this answer helpful? (2) (0)
    • It shuts off when the ice basket is full but the ice will melt. It will not work like a fridge ice maker. Cleaning I think would depend on how much calcium is in the water you use. If you use bottled water you probably would not really have to clean it.

    • I watched mine pretty closely because I wanted to make sure it was making ice. I know it's not cold enough to keep the ice cubes frozen, but the water returns back to the resevoir. Once the water runs out it stops. I clean it after each use.

    • No it does not work like your refrigerator ice maker as it does not have a line of water feeding into it. You have to manually fill the water basin. When the ice maker is full it will stop making ice. You don't have to turn off. I am not sure on the cleaning, however you have to put water in it when you want ice, depending on your usage. I make ice pour into a plastic bag and make some more. We use a lot of ice. ps: not very compact but works well.
