If you have never had a portable ice maker, you need to understand that they are not refrigerated Once the ice is made and falls into the ice bucket, it starts to melt. The unit is insulated so the ice lasts for hours and what melts gets reused to make other ice cubes. Portable ice makers make ice best when the air temperature around the unit is cool, as in an air conditioned room. Outside in the sun, the ice will take longer to form and melt faster. It is also best if you use cold water rather instead of room temp. water. I usually use cold water, keep the ice bucket out of the unit and then allow the first few loads of ice to dump down into the water to help keep it cold. When the ice in the water is gone, I allow a few more loads to dump down into the water. My old ice maker, a different brand, had a small metal bar that would get cold when the ice bucket was full and the unit would stop making ice. After you dumped the ice out, you would have to keep your finger on the bar to warm it up before it would start making ice again. This unit has a light sensor. As soon as the ice is not blocking the sensor, the unit starts making ice. That's a really nice feature. I have not had this ice maker for very long, and in fact I bought two of them, but I had both of them making ice for several days in a row to test them out and they both did well.

So far so good. Takes up very little counter space vs other models, & also the shape of the ice produced holds form/doesn't melt as fast as others (which I never even considered until I noticed the difference between how quickly store bought melts vs this). All & all, happy with my choice. Just a note- bought one through Amazon 1st as a Christmas gift. Great price, but defective. Amazon refunded all but, a little bit of a headache & the cost was actually lower through Wal-Mart (capacity lower, but unless you own a restaurant...) In addition if I have a problem, Wal-Mart is down the street...no S&H. Very satisfied

Owned this ice maker for 45 days. It has already quit working. Ice full light is on, but there is no ice in basket. Called Igloo. They do not make this product, they do not warranty this product, and provide no service for this product. It is made by Curtis Intl out of Canada. Their call center is overseas and you will not be able to understand them, after making multiple calls where you sit on hold for 15+ minutes and get hung up on. When you do get to someone, they had me try ridiculous things that did not work. In the end, I was told to ship it to Canada at my expense with the receipt, and they will decide if they will cover it under warranty. Started doing better research on this icemaker and have found several complaints about quality of product, several owners had to "rig" the icemaker parts to keep it working after a couple of months, as no one can deal with Curtis Intl. I only use the ice maker a few times a week when I want to brew my coffee/tea in my Keruig over ice.

WILL THIS KEEP ICE FROOZEN LIKE A FREEZER TOO. OR DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT OUT AN PUT IT IN A FREEZER?
    by an anonymous customer 2/23/2011

    • A. The unit is insulated, but it will not keep ice frozen. To keep the ice frozen it would need to be placed in a freezer. If the ice is allowed to melt in the unit, it will drip back into the reservoir below and be reused.

    • A. You have to take it out and put it in a freezer. It shuts off when the basket is full and will melt back in into the water compartment.

    • A. You have to take the ice cubes out and put them in a freezer. It does not keep them cold enough to stay frozen...they will for a while but not too long, kinda like a cooler.

    • A. It will keep ice frozen as a stand alone unit or you can transport the ice it has made to the freezer so it will begin to make more Once unit is full it will stop making ice until a lower level is in machine then it will start making again

    • A. they will stay full size for a while but if you want to keep them and make more you can. The tray in it holds about 2 lbs and it does stay fairly full. And it makes cubes pretty quick depending on the size you want. And medium size cubes drop about every 8-9 minutes. It has never run out of cubes for me yet. Hope that helps.

    • A. I'm not really sure what you are asking here, but of course it has to be plugged in to make cubes. It can be turned off and the power left on without making cubes if you just want to let them sit in there like an ice bucket. But, it doesn't hold a lot at one time, so I would make ahead and freeze, or you could make it constantly if you are having a party and just dump the fresh cubes in an ice bucket as it is making them.

    • A. The unit has to be connected to an electricity source in order to produce ice. If turned on, the unit will continue to produce ice as long as water remains in the reservoir. When the water in the reservoir is depleted, no more ice production, and the red ADD WATER light will come on. After adding water, you may have to reset the unit by turning the machine OFF momentarily, then ON again.

    • A. It has to stay connected to electricity, yes, but because it is manually filled, it does not connect to the water line. The water it holds (2 liters, just over 2 quarts) will make a good amount of ice, then it can be refilled to continue. If you are planning a party, start early in the day and store the ice in your refrigerator's freezing compartment.

    • A. The machine must be plugged in and on to make cubes. If you turn off or unplug the machine, the ice in the tray melts back into the water reservoir. I turn mine off at night and turn it on in the morning. I have plenty of ice for a drink in less than 30 minutes. I leave it on all day, but once the tray is full of ice, it stops making ice.
