Strange mashed bean texture and odd "meat" pellets
    5/6/2014

    Customer review by FlyInTheOintment

Where's the beef! To me it tastes like very sweet barbeque beans mashed up. The "meat" pellets have a very soft texture for beef, pork or really any meat that I have ever had. The taste is like a ok barbeque sauce thickened up with some bean paste with a few very soft meat pieces. The good thing is this stuff isn't so sloppy, it actually doesn't move and it spreads like refried beans or that potted meat stuff hormel sells. It's sort of sticky and has thickness of a tomato paste. Chi-Chi loves beef and the jarred Hormel and Hunt's Sloppy Joe sauce but Chi-Chi didn't like this and turned her nose up at it.....that's not a good sign cause she eats pretty much anything. Oddly enough, my parrot Pedro liked it, he likes sweet stuff, but he refused to hold it or pick it up with his feet and I had to hold for him, just about a teaspoons worth that's all. He doesn't like to get his feet dirty. He's 28yrs old and is set in his ways. My advise is to stick to the jarred sauce and add your own ground beef as this is pretty gross.

Pureed beef in pellets with gel
    3/3/2016

The meat pellets are almost disturbing. They're different than real beef. They make the pellets by pureeing meat, then adding gelatin to hold them together. They should have textured it like shredded beef. Unlike other hormel compleats, this is almost all "meat," so they use a _massive_ amount of soy filler that might as well be sawdust. It tastes nothing like meat. It tastes like cardboard. The sauce also has gel in it so it is easy to spoon into a sandwich. This is grotesque. You MUST add water after heating or you'll get meat-pellet jello. Also, you must add salt. Nevertheless, the stuff is edible and the sauce is delicious, despite the very noticeable unpleasant taste of a preservative. I'm here to buy a couple more, along with the turkey ones, which are excellent.

Finally an MRI for the public that can be kept on a pantry shelf well over a year. Bought for emergency power outage during a hurricane and tried one for taste. Now it is for occasional lunches as well as emergencies. The only thing I added besides a bun was some chopped Vidalia onion prior to heating.

    I'm in a camper w/a small ice chest - need shelf-stable stuff!

    • A. Like MREs, these are sealed and then cooked in-package. This means that the food is sterile. As long as the seal is unbroken (i.e., forever) , it will always be safe to eat. The only thing that happens is that over a long long time (5+ years), the food breaks down chemically. This means that the meat may fall apart at the touch or dissolve into the liquid, and the flavor may change slightly. You can delay this by refrigeration, or prevent it by freezing. NOTE: It also includes a somewhat-unpleasant chemical to prevent this deterioration, which you can easily taste. Note that ALL no-refrigeration soft-pack food has this chemical.

    • A. Not frozen, just keep on your shelf. Perfect for a camper, takes one minute to warm. I saw one guy just put it on das h of truck to heat. Has real good taste too.

    • A. It is not frozen and is okay for a shelf, but you would need to keep it cold after opening.

    • A. It is a shelf stable product and would be good for camping. I'd bring some beef though as this is mostly sauce.

    • A. Like MREs, these are sealed and then cooked in-package (yes that's the way they make cat food, but that's irrelevant). This means that the food is sterile. As long as the seal is unbroken (i.e., forever) , it will always be safe to eat. The only thing that happens is that over a long long time (5+ years), the food itself breaks down chemically at the molecular level, mostly by oxygen naturally in the food. This means that the meat may fall apart at the touch or dissolve into the liquid, and the flavor may change slightly. You can delay this for (roughly) 10 years by refrigeration, or completely prevent it by freezing them, in which case they will remain unchanged for decades. NOTE: It also includes a somewhat-unpleasant chemical to prevent this deterioration , which you can easily taste. It will also kill bacteria. This preservative is the only reason the turkey doesn't taste like Grandma's thanksgiving bird. Note that ALL no-refrigeration soft-pack food has this chemical. Faye's knowledgeable recommendation: if you like them despite the unpleasant preservative, buy a lot and keep them (unrefrigerated) as long as you want.
