It has two positions to lock into the trailer hitch, one setting where the unit is all the way into the hitch, and another where it is not all the way in.the reason is that (in my case) with the step all the way into the trailer hitch, the step when fully extended does not reach beyond the tailgate, and the step is under the tailgate. So I used the setting where it is not all the way in, and it stuck out way beyond the bumper. In addition, when it was sticking out like that it triggered my backup sensors, so as soon as I put it in reverse the sensors saw it and of course read it as an object. So I can't use it in the position that will allow the step to reach beyond the tailgate unless I'm willing to lose my backup sensors.I have a 2013 Avalanche. If you have a vehicle with a smaller tailgate OR backup sensors are not an issue and you can have it sticking out when fully stored then I would say go for it - it is easy to use and no problem supporting my 260 lbs at all.Lastly, when comparing prices note that the one I got from Walmart was higher but INCLUDED the threaded hitch lock - I almost missed that and bought it somewhere else. I think it was like $10 more but included the $25 hitch lock. 03/30/2013
