Good performer shipped with old firmware/software The software installation would have been a breeze if the firmware and software as shipped had been up to date. REMINDER: Always check the vendors website for updates first. For this device, update the firmware first, and then install the latest software, which includes the HP ToolBoxFx. The current firmware version is dated 2008-11-24 ("datecode"). Prior to this version, I was unable to communicate with the printer using the either the ToolBoxFX or the Embedded Web Server. Now both work fine!I installed the PCL6 driver and "played" around with Universal Printer Drivers (UPD). Removd the UPD drivers as the PCL6 is sufficient for my needs, including printing Postscript files directly from Windows.I am using the printer on a Workgroup network at home. One computer is running Vista Home Premium 64-bit and one is using Windows XP Prof 32-bit (only the PCL 6 driver installed).In Vista, the printer appears also in the Network without any drivers installed. You may also "install" the printer in the Network neighborhood, but it is not necessary. If you choose to install it from the neighborhood, there will be a second device driver appearing in the Installed Printer section.Hope this helps other! 02/03/2009
Ink spatter, smears, and does not dry on envelopes I am so disappointed! When I put envelopes in the feeder, the mechanism won't catch the envelope. I have to stand there and push every one in and even then the machine jams. Every envelope ends up with smeared ink and ink spatter on it. I printed 70 envelopes and only had 17 that were usable. It's a complete waste printing envelopes and many cards. I would not recommend this printer for office work. 01/15/2009
LOVE this printer Extremely quick print times. Duplexing works great. Full ream of paper fits in extra paper tray. Fits about 10 envelopes in manual feed tray. Rarely jams. GREAT quality. Easy to set up on a Mac/PC environment. Can print to it from Quark, which most printers can not without creating a PDF first. Everyone in the office is very happy with this printer. It's replacing a HP 4000 series that's probably about 10 years old, but is very similar. My only complaints are these: the buttons are not very intuitive. They don't even have words on them, just symbols. I wish HP would learn from Brother and add a "Print again" button. The menu screen is not lit and very small. Sometimes when we have large print jobs the printer gets going so fast and the paper gets so hot that it actually starts to steam. I don't think its a problem, its just a little alarming at first. Overall, I highly reccomend this printer. 12/02/2008
