    Excellent PC for Price

I have purchased many laptops over the years, and have seen first hand how "capable" they are of withstanding a variety of platform usages. When I ordered the HP Black Licorice, the number one reason I ordered it was because I needed a Quad-Core laptop for under 400.00... I play video games, and they require a processor that runs well... When you think of processors, you either have a single CPU (OR) a multi-core CPU. Usually laptops operate with a dual-core, meaning they can run twice as many operations... A quad-core means you can run four-times as many operations... ESSENTIALLY If you, are like me, someone who uses a computer for both business AND personal reasons... and you are also like me and have many programs open at one time (and many windows/tabs within those programs)... You will need a quad, sect, or hexa-cored laptop... You will probably have a difficult time finding anything over quad-core for under 1,000.00... and more likely under 2,500 (and I'm being generous). All processing can be upgraded, so keep that in mind. In normal circumstances a multi-cored CPU will also bring with it better applications, drivers, etc... Ultimately creating a better experience for the computer user. All things aside... Let me start with the basics of this laptop (aside of what you read in the details). The laptop is visually a nice laptop, although I wish the glossy-black was all over and not just surrounding the keyboard. I like the textural aspect of the glossy-plastic vs. the textured plastic. The screen is 15.6 inches, and has a fairly decent graphic level. Movies, videos, tv shows, pictures, and video games all look very nice (and HD media looks great)! The laptop is fairly lightweight, but not featherweight... The keyboard is large enough for large hands (I am a female with 8.5 inch long hands, and I have no problems using the keyboard). I really enjoy the fact that this model has the integrated number pad. So, if you do a lot of computing numbers (or play games where num lock is auto run) then you will enjoy having that feature! One con about the physical aspect is that I feel like the screen/lid is a bit too flexible/bendy. It moves a little too easily, and it makes me suspect of potential attachment issues. I have had laptop's completely lose their lids at the hinges. On to actual performance! SOUND: The speakers have excellent quality! They're nice and loud, and even using headphones there is a level of clarity to the sound I have not found even in a 1,500.00 laptop. So I am going to give a 4.5 star out of 5 for sound. My only issue is that, the volume scale is still pretty high even at 30-50. VISUAL: As I said before, the graphics card on this computer is fairly nice! It is suitable to play popular MMORPG's... and The Sims 3 (which all of the Sims games are difficult to play on a laptop... many won't allow it to even be downloaded). I play Left4Dead, World of Warcraft, Second Life, The Sims 3, and a few other video games... all of which have just as good (if not better) graphics than the three other custom built gaming desktops in our house. PROCESSING: Currently, I have 25 tabs open in this one window... A second window with about 10 tabs, Spotify, Microsoft Word, The Sims 3, and a few other programs running... I am not at a loss for performance, the system is moving just as smoothly and efficiently as if I had one program running. So, the quad-core processing really is living up to what it is meant to do. INTERFACE: If you're like me and new to Windows 8.1, it was a tad awkward setting the laptop up. The "desktop" feature is not upfront and is something you must locate and pin to your tile screen. I primarily function through the desktop, but because of the setup of this OS, you still have to use the tile screen to function through some applications unless you have them pinned or a shortcut made on the actual desktop. I STRONGLY recommend doing so, if you are not comfortable with the tile app. Most familiar applications such as Microsoft Word, will appear different than on a computer with XP, Vista, or OS 7. Keep that in mind, but I really like the new physical changes to Microsoft Office as it has been integrated into the 8/8.1 OS. You can, like Windows 7, customize color and scheme (as well as sounds, backgrounds, etc...) in much the same way. If you've operated a Windows phone through Nokia, this won't be extremely new to you. I personally don't care if my taskbar is standard blue or if it's neon pink... Whatever! To each there own though, and there are people who do care about that level of customization. So, it is there if you want it! You will find that there are some flaws to the "smoothness" of the interface. I get irritated by how easily edge-scrolling brings up other applications open... So, you have to be careful where your mouse is positioned... HARDWARE: The mouse on this laptop is default set to being very sensitive. You may need to turn down the sensitivity. I found that while using the browser (Chrome) without doing anything the screen would constantly zoom in/out... I turned the sensitivity down and it stopped. The webcam is fairly typical of integrated webcam's in laptops. I haven't really used it very much, but it's average in quality. The built-in microphone is of decent quality. I can record singing with it, and it sounds fine (no imbalances). _______________ Obviously, this computer is not intended to equal a computer that costs 2000-5000 dollars, but for the price it is an EXCELLENT choice for a multi-use laptop. Whether you use it for work, school, facebook games, serious online gaming, pleasure online gaming, etc... I think it will be a wonderful fit for someone not looking to spend more than 400.00... Some of us, just don't have the pocket change to spend a lot... and it's rare to get so much bang for your buck. Overall, I don't have a bad opinion of the laptop. Some things I would change like the texture and smoothness of the interface... but Windows 8 is still relatively new so in time things will come.

Very happy with this computer Windows 8.1 easier to use than Windows 8 . The 15 inch screen is bright and renders colors nicely . The Quad-Core Accelerated Processor handles multiple processes easily . My only gripe so far is that it was very difficult to the installed McCaffee Anti Virus software . My ISP provides me F Secure free and I've used it for years no problems . I would recommend this computer to others .

This HP laptop has turned out to be quite a good choice of computers considering a much more expensive alternative available. This laptop can be quite fast once you get rid of all the extra fluff (those pre-installed apps that nobody wants). That's what I had to do in addition to getting rid of both McAfee and Norton, both of which were installed on this machine...???...don't know why either...and just used the protection that is already on the laptop...windows defender and firewall (both of which I've used on currently owned computers with no issues). By getting rid of all of the unnecessary apps and programs, I was able to speed this little machine up by 30% to 40% faster on startup and shutdown. A very noticeable improvement in my estimation.

    • A. There is a lot of debate about this among battery "experts." I have used three different laptops over the past ten years and have kept them plugged in almost all the time. I have never had any problems with the batteries as a result.

    • A. Yes, it can be left plugged in. Leaving a laptop plugged in will not harm the laptop, or the battery in any way.

    • A. I was told by HP when I had a problem that leaving the power cord plugged in all the time leads to static build up on the hard drive and memory chips and to unplug the computer as soon as it's charged . This could lead to BIOS corruption or failure of the hard drive .

    • A. The newer lithium ion batteries are designed to where they can support being plugged in after the battery has been fully charged so this HP PC shouldn't have any issues with being plugged in indefinitely.
