When my 41 started getting flaky, I picked up a 33S on clearance at Walmart. I was pleased to find it approved for FE and PE exams, and so is the 35S. I saw a review somewhere else regarding the displays. The 35S is definitely clearer, because the pixels are spread out -- the decimal point is easier to find, etc. The keys on the 35S feel much better than on the 33S, the Enter key is back where it belongs, and the rows are straight instead of the weird chevron of the 33S -- What were they thinking? Still checking it out, the 35S has a cool way to quickly program a repetitive calculation. I am looking forward to transferring my 41 programs to the 35S.

Bought the HP35S only because it is 1 of only 2 HP calculators allowed for the State of California PE/EIT exams. I already have a HP48 for general use which is much more powerful but not allowed. The calculator I originally received (received via site to store in just 3 days) had a problem (one key was difficult to activate) which was an obvious manufacturing defect. Called HP support, had the replacement within a week. Otherwise it works as advertised. I stay with HP calculators because I really like RPN format, which I believe only HP makes. There is nothing really special about this calculator, but it does what it is supposed to do and is pretty cheap for the power it has. I did try the HP33S previously (the other allowed calc) but found the key layout on that one hard to use. The HP35 has a more 'normal' layout for previous HP users.

HP Calculators New verses Old

Have attached a image with an example of some different HP calculators (RPN) which I have used over the years and a brief summary below. Attached image from left to right HP 35s - Lasted about 10 months before a key failed. This calculator have never been out in the field. Brought this to replace the previous 35s. HP 35s - Lasted about 12 months before the keys failed. This Calculator have never been out in the field. Brought this to replace the 48Gii. HP 48 Gii - Lasted about 8 months before the keys failed. This calculator has never been out in the field. I brought this to replace my 32Sii and at the time thought it would be a worth while investment. (Big $$ mistake) HP 32sii - Lasted about 10 Years before the calculator eventually failed. All keys work up until then. This calculator spent 60% of its time out in the field in most conditions. Was also run over by a vehicle once and still worked. I brought this to replace my previous 32s. HP 32s - Lasted about 8 Years before the calculator eventually failed. All keys work up until then. This calculator spent 80% of its time out in the field in most conditions including extreme. (sorry no image attached as it's not on me at the moment.) As my last 35s has now just lost functionality with one of its keys today, I find myself at a crossroads now with HP calculators after 25 years plus.

I really think this calculator could have been amazing but its greatly limited to: 1. Allow on engineering exams 2. Please old timers. Just please do this.. Invent a new version of the hp28s with QUALITY ROBUST KEYS. make it able to connect to a computer so you can write programs on the computer and check lines. Stay away from this hp prime app gimmicky nonsense. Make sure functions and their inverses are on the same keys (10^x and log..etc.) make it black. Make STO and RCL primary keys. Keep units off of the keyboard and listed in a menu. Allow for multilettered variables. Matrix mathematics. Act fast. I hear some engineers are working on a wp 43s that will be a 42s upgrade. Fight back with the 28s.

For anyone looking for a really good scientific calculator for engineering or mathmatics this is for you. I am a electrical engineering student and this calculator is permitted on all exams taken at the College of Engineering at USF. Also is is permitted on the FE exam as well as the PE exam. Its programable and that really makes repetitive calculatons containing the same varriables very easy. You can use and program the calculator either in RPN mode or Algebraic mode. This calculator has cut down the time it takes to do several calculations, though it does take quite a bit of time to program but in the end its worth it. I hightly recomened it.

  • A. Yes, it handles fractions but is far more powerful. It you only need to handle fractions, I suggest buying a much cheaper calculator.

  • A. Yes, to enter a number, you use the decimal key where you normally would, then again after the numerator, so it displays the line (don't remember the term), then you enter the denominator. Pretty cool, and maybe the way other calculators work. The answer is then displayed as a decimal until you press a key FDISP for fraction display. Then the display stays in fractions until you change it back. The nice thing about the 35S is that it can use RPN (reverse Polish notation) or algebraic enty. RPN for me!

  • A. yes. you can choose how you want to display fractions. in HP world, a fraction of 2-3/4 is entered as 2.3.4, the calculator knows how to interpret it. i know the time has passed, but if your kid can run this, he'll have a leg up on his friends with a Ti.

  • A. yes, it can solve simultaneous equations (you need two equations with two variables). easy to use is a relative statement. with the decline in overall intelligence and education in this country, you'll be challenged at first. but as you use it, you'll be come smarter as it forces you to think... which is a good thing.

  • A. With one equation and two unknowns, there is no single solution to x and y. The calculator only returns multiple solutions as a message, but no actual solution. It needs two equations with two unknowns to get a solution for x and y.
