Better than digital for accuracy. Best price too.

Since I broke my last mercury thermometer, my family has been through 6 digital ones costing from $1.50 to $60.00 each and none of them has performed well. I decided to try this Geratherm Mercury-Free Oral Glass Thermometer while looking online for some temperature taking device that had at least some degree of accuracy. The strange shape takes some getting used to but it works GREAT so far. I still use my digital protectors because they fit and it cuts down on the washing of the unit. You can't beat the old mercury ones for accuracy but since we cannot get them anymore this is a pretty good alternative. My family is pleased with them! Oh and after an extensive internet search, I found the price at Walmart to be the best.

I thought the packaging made this product look like a good product to buy. However, this glass thermometer is shaped really funny. It is not shaped like a standard thermometer but rather is shaped like an hourglass, sort of. It makes it very difficult to keep in your mouth and you can't really keep your mouth closed around the thick glass part. I think the company is good, and the product was well intentioned, but the shape of the glass is not very practical. I will have to buy another one....

The thermometer is slow to record the temperature - that's expected with non-digital thermometers. I like it because I don't have to worry about batteries in an emergency. The only downside that I can see is that the level just stays where you left it last unless you shake it down. And it needs quite a few sharp jerks to get it to go down. If I don't shake it down, I can't be sure I have a reading or if its just stuck at an old temperature.

  • A. You shake it down (just like the old mercury thermometers) until the fluid line inside is well below 98.6. Then you place the thermometer in the person's mouth with the bulb part under the tongue. You are supposed to leave it there at least 5 minutes and while it is there, the fluid inside is rising to the temperature of the person. I would check to see if you can take a child's temperature with this because it is glass and appears to be thin glass at that. Anyway, when the time is up, (it doesn't beep or anything so you have to time it yourself. It can't hurt to stay longer so if you just guess on the time, no no harm done.) So when the time is up, you look at the unit to see where the line has risen to and that is your temperature. If you have never read a traditional thermometer, it might take some practice. But it is by far a more accurate reading.
