Only time will tell if it holds up well over the long haul, or if the investment was a poor decision. Realistically I don't believe it is meant for heavy duty service, but if taken good care of, and with only emergency duty, I will expect a long service life (many years) of reliable service.

Although we have had this generator less than 2 months, we put 70 hours on it during one extended power outage in the area. It started up without a problem and ran flawlessly the whole time. So far, I have no complaints.

I bought this generator after Hurricane Irene and I had to put it in service during the freak October snowstorm that hit the East Coast. It performed as well as expected. I used it for 36 hours without a hitch. My wife was happy to have hot water to take a shower and also she enjoyed being able to use the microwave. I argued with her for 14 years as to the pros of having a generator. She always said it would be a waste of money, guess what ? Her tune changed during the snowstorm. She was happy to have the generator.

    • The GP6500 is designed for use either as a portable unit utilizing multiple receptacles, or in conjunction with a Generac manual transfer switch utilizing the 30 amp receptacle. The GP6500, model 5941, is rated for a continuous output of 6500 watts, with a rated amperage of 54.2 amps at 120 volts, or 27.1 amps at 240 volts. We do not recommend connecting your portable generator directly to your main panel without the use of a manual transfer switch. Connecting directly to the main panel without a manual transfer switch can cause back feeding, which could damage the generator, damage your home’s main panel, or potentially harm someone servicing the utility lines. Your local certified electrician will be able to appropriately determine the manual transfer switch necessary, as well as the correct size connection cable from your generator to your manual transfer switch. If installing a manual transfer switch is not an option, utilizing an extension cord from an appliance directly to the generator is acceptable as long as the extension cord is properly rated for the amperage and distance you are interested in. If you are looking for a cord to utilize with the 30 amp receptacle on the generator and you have a minimum distance of 35 feet, you will want a cord that is rated for 30 amps at 35 feet, or 30 amps at 50 feet, etc, depending on your distance requirements.
