I know this model of GPS is good, but this refurbhised product is not good. Other than navigation system nothing works in this GPS. Navigation also takes time to connect satellites and POI is fine. Remaining none of the features will work properly. I also took 2 yr protection plan, for this we have to wait for long time to get a replacement.

First, but most important: I bought this from Walmart because I wanted to be able to take it back hassle free if I did not like it. The price was very, very good, and Walmart does not have a 15% restocking fee. Added bonus: upon receipt I went online to update everything, software and mapping data bases. THE VERY FIRST THING: Garmin wanted a copy of my store receipt and the site specifically stated that if I bought it from an internet source (my guess, Ebay or Craigslist) then the updates would not be allowed. Then, I discovered that this remanufactured unit had been registered in March of 2010 and that I had only 5 months of warranty left for software updates. But, after registering online and talking with a customer service rep, the warranty was extended out and I would up with 30 months, not 24. To me the best warranties are those I never have to use. My experience is that longer warranties that are also no additional cost represent a good product that the manufacturer will stand behind and, surprise, are not needed after all. I'll tell you my age later on, but, speaking of dependability, my first day with this GPS, I tripped and dropped the unit on my concrete front steps. I am 6'2" when young, so the fall was substantial. No damage to the unit; all the reports here are after the fall, and there are no cracks on the case or the screen. I bought a Garmin travel case afterwards for safe walking the unit from house to car. This is my first GPS, so I have no base reference. That said, this is a great little gadget. I purchased this unit first because it had a lot of extra features like bluetooth for my phone and, allegedly, could find useful places like filling stations with the lowest prices. The Bluetooth is adequate, but I prefer my headset or the Bluetooth thru my car's radio (having two cars, the feature is necessary in one of them). The other features, it had trouble loading its databases to find gas; I did not try other destinations. Mapping out a trip: the first trip for this unit, I lent it to my daughter who used it to go to Eugene, OR, a city of 120,000 or so, and with its sister across the Willamette River, Springfield, a mid-sized metropolitan area of about 200,000 people. At purchase, I downloaded my one-time map upgrade. My daughter complained that it was not able to navigate Eugene correctly but that since she already knew approximates as to her destinations, she was okay with it. One of the errors, exit 195A&B were reconfigured last year, but the maps were still using the old road courses. The updates I received as a part of my purchase were dated March of 2011, so, I would have thought that the changes would have been made or that my daughter did not understand what was being directed, this being her first experience with GPS. I then used the device to travel to Portland. I had no problem with the turn by turn, although I do wish that there were a way to see the "Big Picture" of the trip. That is, it is difficult to see turn by turns for the whole trip on just one screen. If I were to go off course, including a road side rest stop, "Recalculating" became the word of the day as the GPS wanted me to return to the original route. I learned that if I made an unforseen stop off course as a side trip, regardless of distance, that the best tactic was to re-enter my destination as a "new destination" even though it was the SAME destination. I did enjoy the speed limit feature, as a lot of speed limit signs mysteriously hide behind overgrowing brush. I am not sure if my car's speedometer or if the GPS was more accurate in reporting my speed, but I chose the GPS because it said I was going a bit slower than the speedometer did, at 60 the same but at 75 on the speedometer, 69 on the GPS. Fortunately, I was not pulled over and told precisely which I was doing; I did go through a radar trap in Salem without incident. Back to its ability to find me and to find destinations. I loved it in Portland. Pop in a destination and I was there with minimum anxiety and no problems as to which turn to make. I began to question my daughter's experience, believing her report on Eugene was a failure to understand what the unit said. Then I went to Eugene, and ... my daughter was absolutely correct. The unit kept getting lost. Eugene is not Atlanta, GA with its 5 Peachtree Streets: Eugene is an academic community laid out by professional city planners, unlike Boston, another academic community which was laid out by cows who became steaks 400-450 years ago. In Eugene, the GPS kept getting lost. Also, and this may be because of Summer road work, the one way streets kept going in the "other" direction and it could not "RECALCUATING" quick enough because of a change in course while in motion. My conclusion as to directions and updates. This unit works great in major cities, like Portland, but smaller cities, less so. I have read, but not digested, the instructions. If I understand them correctly, the unit depends upon users to report changes as much as it also depends upon Public Works Department to report changes. That makes sense, there are more users in and around larger cities to make the reports. I am 66 and have been driving about 50 years. I can navigate cities with paper maps, but, given that GPS is here, I don't often look at paper maps anymore. Until this purchase, I would plot a trip with Mapquest or Google Maps and print turnbyturn directions for a trip. But, I did need the paper map to get back on course, and, anyway, paper maps and paper turn by turn directions can be dangerous in city traffic. I paid about $100 for this GPS. It makes city driving much quicker and less stressful than paper maps and paper turnbyturn directions. If you are going to drive in any City (even Eugene), then you are advised that GPS is the most modern, safest way to travel; not FoolProof, safest.

This is a great GPS, especially for the price. I had previously purchased a TomTom from another place and returned it. I was afraid this would not have all the features but it does. I use the GPS for my cellphone calls and I love being able to use Google to find locations. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars is that the lane assist does not show all the lanes like the one I returned did, but this one far exceeds it anyway.

I think the Garmin 1690 is great.I give it a 5 star because it work great when it worked.I am returning it back to the store because I can't get it to turn on again this is refurb.,I get it a 2 star for value because for 20 dollars more you can get a new one with no problems .but for the price I think it works great the bluetooth works well, the speaker volume is loud enough and I like the lane change in the left top corner it tells the distance to the turn and the google works only in some areas which it.s a issue with me and this one here you can buy from garmin a plug that you plug in your car and it feeds information from your car to the GPS it tells you if there are problems with you car and mileage etc.I have had many Garmins and think this is about the best one I have had ,good unit can't go wrong for the price difference buy new
