Garmin Legend H Handheld GPS Navigator 4.3 5 9 10
A very functional product This product meets the requirements I need to enjoy the outdoors. It assures me that I'll always be able to identify my location with a press of a switch and provide me with accurate directions to return safely to my origianl point of debarkation. 12/27/2010
All the best features Does everything a modern GPS should do, but without unnecessary bells and whistles.Pros:Connects to computer: Uses special USB cable (provided). There's plenty of free software out there to manage points, routes and tracks. (Not sure about maps.)Well-designed button shortcuts: Double-click menu (from any screen) to get tom main menu. Click and hold menu to open the "find" screen. Push & hold rocker button to create a mark for current location.Custom setup: I really appreciate being able to arrange what screens show up in what order, and what details are shown.Accuracy: The high-sensitivity receiver can be set to receive WAAS corrections. In ideal conditions accuracy shows as +/- 11 ft, and indeed it is often spot-on, making for accurate points and detailed tracks. You can also have it take a series of readings for an average location to improve accuracy of waypoints in poor conditions. The only thing it lacks in this regard is the altimeter and electronic compass found in higher-end models.Low power consumption: You can change the setting for battery type if you are using rechargeable AA's. Even on older ones with a fresh charge I was getting 14 hours of use. Additionally, the USB cable can provide working power from a (not included) generic USB adapter in the car.Screen and Backlight: The white backlight with two options for brightness is great. Setup to turn off after a sec. to save power, comes back on when you press any button.Cons:1) The rocker button is functional, but poor for entering text. I worry that this will be the first part of the unit to wear out.2) Paperless geo-caching is barely possible. For each point you have a name (14 characters) and a note field (30 characters), and that's all beyond the location data.3) The base map is minimal, and useless for navigation except on major roads such as for interstate travel. Still, I wouldn't put all my trust in any one device, so paper maps come with me on new journeys anyway. For those of you who use good print maps plus GPS, this is your unit! 07/07/2011
Good Field GPS For Geocaching Purchased this unit for geocaching. Comes with lanyard and USB cable for computer downloads. Not plug and play. Must download USB driver update from Garmin's website for computer to recognize device, to register product, and scan for software updates. The download is simple and quick though. Had to do this eventhough I use another Garmin product and had drivers installed already. Once connected to computer, turn on unit, and it will read. Readily accepts waypoints from the primary geocaching web site without problem. Also provides some information about each waypoint, not just the cache number. Wish the display were easier to see in bright sun but still a great unit with basics for a good price. Satisfied with purchase. Also recommend the carrying and storage cases. 08/10/2011
