You need a harp and a harp bottom (you can see a pic of it on this blog: http://www.thequeencitystyle.com/2012/04/smashing-rack-of-lamps.html). you can get them at lowes or home depot. i hear target sells them too.

There are three common types of lamp shades.
1) side spring clamps -they just slip right over a standard bulb.
2) shades with a small circular hole in the top that sits on a post and is secured with a lamp shade Finial
3) the one that this kit requires is one with a large circular ring on the bottom of the shade which rests over the bulb socket first, then you place the bulb in.

Buy a lamp shade that slides onto the bulb. The shade is held in place by a springy wire thing that is part of the shade. It gently pinches the bulb. You'll probably be using a 25 watt tapered bulb on your bottle lamp, the same type that you'd use in a ceiling fan. Just slide the shade onto it.

how do you attach a shade to the finished lamp ?

Yes, the cardboard sleeve stays on.
This insulates between the wire screws and the metal sleeve.

Do you keep the cardboard inside the Socket Shell and Socket Cap?

I&#39;m not sure as I don&#39;t have my paper on hand anymore, but the kit came with an instruction sheet with steps to follow. On that sheet during the wiring step it did specify which side the &quot;ribbed&quot; wire went onto and which side the &quot;smooth&quot; wire went onto. That would be the difference in the two wires, but which was positive, I don&#39;t remember/know. Sorry.

In an earlier review someone mentioned that the stoppers don't fit the Bottle so they use duct tape.

The stopper fits by tightening the stopper by placing the small nut at the bottom. As you tighten it, the stopper bows out and fits nicely in the bottle.

Rubber stoppers

For a unique lamp, this is a much less expensive kit than others I found online. My local walmart carries 3 lampshades under $8 to complete the project.

This kit had everything needed to repair on old lamp or make one from an old wine bottle.

All you need to repair an old lamp or make one.

I have some very unique wine bottles, had holes drilled in the back at the bottom, and wanted to turn them into lamps and this kit is perfect for that project. I also appreciated the reviewer who explained how to make the "stoppers" fit - very helpful. I would have prefer a more neutral cord color such as the "gold" which seems to "blend" better than any other color.

Great product!

This kit is well worth the price. Others are selling almost the same thing for double the money. Only problem is that none of the three adapters ever fit my bottles. But, duct tape is cheap and works well.

I drill holes in my bottles so the cord doesn't hang outside, but this kit allows you to either drill a hole, or if you don't have the right tools, you can run it along the outside of the bottle.

These bottle lamps make great gifts. Pair it with the lamp "Better Homes" 8" lamp shade and it is a hit.

Well worth the price

Wasn't too drastically difficult to put together without any help. Used it to build a beer bomber bottle into a lamp! Reasonably priced as well.

Cool cool

East to put together and fit to bottle making it a keepsake and usable lamp. Note: this kit does not include a harp so if you have or purchase a lamp shade style requiring a harp - buy it before you start the project to save time taking it apart (not a big deal... only takes minutes) to add the harp. I ended up purchasing a shade that just fits around the light socket. Not including the harp is the only reason I rated this product a 4 and not a 5.

Lamp Kit

This kit came with everything I needed to make a bottle lamp except the bottle. My problem, was that I chose a bottle with a mouth too large to fit the smallest adapters in the kit and too small for the largest one. Never fear though, I was able to make it work with drilling a hole into the lid of the bottle and rigging it through that. The biggest thing I wished I'd known ahead of time would've been how frustrating it was going to be to make the "special" knot needed to complete the wiring. But, after getting mad and hurting finger tips if finally came together with some heavy breathing. All in all I'm satisfied with my purchase and I would purchase over again.

I just needed a wired plug to fix an old lamp. it works and the price was right.
