Book Information

The following content was provided by the publisher.
For decades, having hepatitis C virus (HCV) was the equivalent of serving a life sentence with a dangerous liver disease. All of that changed with the discovery that the virus could be defeated with a new treatment. To shed light on this groundbreaking therapy, Lucinda Porter, a registered nurse, a passionate HCV advocate, and a hep C patient herself, has written a comprehensive guide for people who are undergoing or considering this new hep C treatment.

Ms. Porter begins by explaining what hepatitis C is. She then looks at both the mainstream and the alternative management techniques currently used to keep the virus in check. From there, she examines hep C s new therapy and what you can expect from it. The author demystifies test results, provides important questions you can ask your healthcare provider, and offers advice all with the compassion of someone who has gone through the process herself.

Well over 3 million North Americans live with hepatitis C. Here, at last, is all the information they need to make informed decisions about their future.

Review by Library Journal (2012-02-24)

When registered nurse and columnist Porter contracted hepatitis C in 1996 from a blood transfusion, not much was known about the disease. It didn't even have an official name! In the years since, Porter has become an expert in the field of hepatitis C, eventually working at Stanford University Medical Center's hepatology division. She presents the wealth of her knowledge in this book, as she discusses treatment options, self-care methods, managing side effects, and maintaining overall health while undergoing treatment.

She also includes basic information about what hepatitis C is and how it is contracted. The book contains a glossary and a brief bibliography as well as an extensive list of resources, including many websites, on various aspects of the disease.

Verdict: Porter's experience of being a hepatitis C patient and nurse is reflected throughout. This title should be quite useful for people facing hepatitis C and for readers who wish to learn more to help family members and friends. Highly recommended as a resource.
