About this item
The Light Tank M24 was an American light tank used during WWII and in postwar conflicts. Combat experience showed several shortcomings of the Light Tank M3/M5, especially a weak armament. In April 1943 the Ordnance Corps and Cadillac division of General Motors started work on the new project with every effort made to keep the weight under 20 tons; the armor was kept light, with the glacis plate only 25-millimeters thick. A new lightweight 75-millimeter gun was developed, with a thinly walled barrel and different recoil mechanism. The design featured wider tracks and torsion bar suspension with a low silhouette and three-man turret. In October 1943 the first pilot vehicle was delivered and production began in 1944. Its service name Chaffee is in honor of General Chaffee who helped develop the use of tanks in the armed forces. This replica is of a U.S. M24 Chaffee Light Tank produced by Cadillac, attached to the 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, later deployed in Germany in 1945.
