Tasty and convenient, but small

I like these because they are tasty and convenient. They are much smaller than the New Zealand green mussels I enjoy at the Chinese buffet, but they also have more flavor. A little salty, a little sweet, and not as rubbery. They taste good all by themselves, but dipping them in a variety of sauces is also good (and fun). The mussels are already cooked, so you only have to warm them. Sometimes I don't even bother warming them but let them thaw until there aren't any chunks of ice remaining in the shells. (What's the point of warming up already-cooked mussels only to cool them back down again so you can eat them chilled?) The convenience factor can be a food safety factor as well, compared to live mussels...in addition to cleaning, you have to make sure there aren't any dead mussels. With these precooked mussels, someone else has already done the work for you. The price is comparable to live mussels in my area. Oh yeah...I should add that my girlfriend doesn't care for New Zealand mussels but she liked this kind.

I love this product. I completely defrost them before I add them to a hot mixture of garlic, chicken stock and white wine. Cover & cook for 10 minutes and they are done. The ones that do not open we open with a knife. Have not had a bad one in all that I have cooked. The problem is Walmart having them in stock!!!!!!!

I bought frozen mussels from Walmart this morning and they have no directions. How do you cook frozen mussels? usually you cook them live and do not cook unopened ones. Since these are all dead anyway, how do I know they are safe to eat?

  • A. The first answer is simple. Pour hot water into a large pot, enough to cover and float the package. Open the outer packaging and place the inner package into the water. Do not put the mussels directly into the water. They will be fine this way but they taste better and are easier to make if you just boil the whole pack. The cooking time is totally arbitrary. At least thaw them. No specific temperature. I usually leave them in the hot water (with the burner on) until the package puffs up and the juice inside turns milky white. They will be quite firm if you do it this way. Drain and serve. All clam and crab type shellfish are fully cooked when you buy them frozen. You cannot freeze and transport uncooked shellfish of this type. It is too dangerous, and the food *will* spoil, so you never have to worry about that. You know they are safe to eat because someone processed them and took the dead ones out. There is always a chance that an unopened mussel is missed and you should always be on the lookout for funky looking clams. I typically will throw out 1-2 mussels per package.

  • A. I rinse all the ice off the mussels. I put quart of chicken stock, diced garlic and shallots, as much as you like, bring to a boil in a pan. Then add white wine, bring to boil, put in the mussels and cook 10-15 minutes. Serve. We have never gotten a bad one in all the years we have eaten them. The cooking directions are on the side of the bag.

  • A. MUSSEL MISCONCEPTIONS First off, I eat mussels at least twice a week. I have never been sick. 1st misconception, don't eat mussels that aren't open after cooking. This is both true and false. Mussels that are bought in frozen bags are sorted par-cooked and immediately frozen in four steps. 1st and most important (to us) is sorting. The live are separated from dead mussels then quickly sent to the DE-bearding cooking and freezing in a quick assembly line. Live mussels from the fish market are a different story. If they die they start to decompose, collect sand and nasty junk. If opened you can smell the nasty. The mussels that go through the assembly line don't have the time to start the decomposition process. 2nd misconception- mussels have to be overcooked to kill bacteria. I admit to eating raw mussels! Like a oyster they can be safely eaten raw. But please take the steps to limit your risk (just like raw fish and oysters ect)...for fun Google the subject What makes a mussel poisonous is the area they live in. Red tide and dangerous plankton. They are filter feeders that filter micro organisms. The organisms poison the meat. no amount of cooking will remove poisonous meat or chemical contamination. DON'T PICK AND EAT MUSSELS LOCALLY. Enjoy your mussels-open the unopened mussels and check it out. Does it smell? is there sand in it? some of the best mussels Ive tasted have been in closed shells steaming in the their own juices

  • A. There are cooking directions on the side panels of the bag. Microwave on one side, stove top on the other side. The mussels are already cleaned, de-bearded, and cooked before they are frozen. All you have to do is heat and serve, but sometimes I just thaw them if I want to eat them chilled like the New Zealand mussels at my local Chinese buffet. I don't know how they get the mussels closed after they cook them, but that's how they come in the package. Even the ones that don't open back up after heating them seem to be ok after forcing them open. Hope this helps.
