14 gauge grounded extension cord

This cord is very handy to have around for extending the reach of a window air-conditioner, a portable electric heater or a power strip with all of your computer hardware plugged into it. These are three things that suck up more power than a cheap 16 or 18 gauge cord can handle. Most of the uses I mention are in the 12 to 15 amp range, which needs a thick cord with a cover that won't melt under the pressure. The length is nice when you just need a few extra feet and a 15 or 25 foot cord would just get in the way. I literally bet my life on this cord every day and it seems to hold up well for years of use. The plug design is also good for tight spaces such as behind a bookcase or bed where a regular plug would get bent severely over and over, making it fray and causing a dangerous situation!

A good length cord for those appliances whose cords are too short but need a heavy gauge cord. I use it for my microwave and seasonal small room heater.SW

I use it on a 1500 watt portable heater. Cord doesn't even get warm after 2 hours. I feel safe using this cord.

This is a well-made cord at a great price. The right angled plug hugs the wall nicely so you can place furniture in front of the outlet with ease.

Excellent heavy duty extension cord. Only complaint I have is that nowhere does it give the wire gage.

I was told that if I were going to use an extention cord with and air conditioner that it needed to be AWG 12 or lower. I don't know what this means but I saw that someone gave a review and said that its good to use for things that are in the 12-15 amp range. Is that the same kind of extention cord I am looking for?

  • A. I'm looking for the safest appropriate extension cord for a microwave and thought I'd pass on this updated link re Scoob98's answer: http://www.yourepair.com/21/extension-cords.html - this seems to be a helpful site. Thanks to mharris127 and Scoob98 for the great info!

  • A. It isn't recommended to use an extension cord with this unit, but there is a 14 AWG extension cord sold at your local Wal-Mart that meets specs for use with up to 15 amp loads. It costs about $10 or $15 depending on length and will say heavy appliance cord on the wrapper and is intended for use with large air conditioners, microwaves and the like. The inside electrical wiring on a 15 amp circuit is usually the same size, so I really see no problem with using this type of extension cord safety-wise as long as it is run against a wall and not across the floor or where someone could trip or damage it walking or moving furniture. A 12 AWG version is also available at a home improvement store but would have a 20 amp plug where it goes into the electrical outlet (it will take both the standard 15 amp and the inverted 20 amp 110V plugs at the outlet side). This cord would require installation of a 20 amp outlet (which also would take 15 or 20 amp plugs) and a circuit with at least a 20 amp breaker and 12 AWG inside house wiring, both of which are not necessary for this unit. Do not use a regular two-wire white or brown cord (usually about a dollar at any discount store) as it would only be 16 or 18 AWG and would possibly melt and cause a fire. Also, do not use an extension cord longer than 25 feet as the current loss from a larger cord would affect operation of the unit and produce heat that would possibly melt the cord and cause fire (this is usually prevented in a home or workshop by using a larger AWG wire cord, for example 10 AWG instead of 12 or 14 but that thickness cord is hard to handle and is usually yellow which would stick out like a sore thumb in a home). For example in my home I have mostly 10 AWG, 30 amp circuits inside the walls of my home for my electrical system because my home is 72 feet long and smaller wire for those long runs would heat up under heavy load and both be a fire hazard and trip breakers unnecessarily due to the current loss and heat. While we are discussing electricity, put this air conditioner on a dedicated circuit if you can as it draws close to what a standard 20 amp circuit can handle anyway. Any electrician can install this circuit in your home for a couple hundred dollars.

  • A. Check this website out, http://www.yourepair.com/2010/06/07/extension-cords.html ,it should have the info you need as far as what gauge you need for what job. It all depends on the amps your appliance uses and the distance you are from your appliance to your power outlet. Also, about this cord, I haven't purchased one yet but I'm about to and if the wire gauge is not printed on the packaging anywhere then look along the cord itself. You should find imprinted into the cord's insulated covering the wire gauge listed along with all the UL specifications and such. Most often manufacturers will list the wire gauge as something like this 14/3C, meaning it's a 3 conductor(wire) cord with each conductor(wire) being 14 gauge. Hope this helps.
