I was looking for a highlight kit to lighten my ashy med/dark brown hair. My hair tends to look brassy or reddish when colored. I did a strand test (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) the day before. The longest time recommended was 90 minutes. It took the whole 90 minutes to lighten it enough and get rid of the brassy/reddish color. I did it myself and couldnt reach the back very well so I loved the lines on the cap. I did the front and crown and left the very back alone. It looked professionally done. It did dry out my hair, but I had assumed it would. I used Natural Instincts to lighten up the root growth after 5 weeks. I will use this highlight kit again.

I've used this brand for years, it's very good and reliable. One box lasts me a very long time as I don't mix the whole thing at once. I have used it so much I am familiar with what the consistency of the mix should be now that I just mix a little of the liquid with the powder until I get the right mix and then I close up the powder packet and the bottle and save it for next time. I buy a whole bunch of "caps" at sally's beauty supply because they only include one cap in the box. In this way one box will last me through at least 6 or 7 highlights. I only do the crown of my head. If you are doing your whole head or doing the foil method you will go through a box much faster than I do. I leave it on for the full 90 minutes. That is the longest time they recommend doing. I always have good results.

The person who originally highlighted my hair used bleach. I am only trying to touch up the roots of my hair.

    • A. Hi KelliBelli, I use Clairol Frost & Tip Original Formula. I think the lightening substance is hydrogen peroxide. In the 60s, that's what we called "bleach." I've used the kit to touch up the roots, but to avoid lightening the already highlighted strands, you will need to protect them. I use aluminum foil & cut about 20 individual 4 inch squares. After you pull the hair through the holes in the cap, take one of the aluminum foil squares and wrap a section of the highlighted hair with it, making sure to pinch in the foil at top & bottom. I take about 10 holes worth of hair for every aluminum square. After all the highlighted hair is wrapped with aluminum foil, apply the mixture to your roots. I hope this helps, and good luck!

    • A. Yes...it does contain bleach since bleach is the only thing that will remove color from hair. The kit is great...and have used it for years!

I would like to know if I put this on my hair one day (7-16) and we didnt leave on long enough, my hair turned out to be on the redish side instead of blond. Can i redo it today? How long should you wait if I cant do it again next day?

    • A. Hi Rhonda, I've frosted my hair with Clairol Frost & Tip kit for over 40 years. I would definitely not use the kit again the next day. I know it is frustrating not to have left the formula on long enough to get the right shade. You will get the hang of it. I would wait at least a couple of weeks before frosting again. Remember that you won't be able to get the same exact hairs through the holes in the cap, so you will have a mixture of reddish and blonde hairs. Leave the formula on long enough so that your test strand looks a pale yellow and not a bright yellow, unless you are going for that look. If you don't care for the look of your blonde and red highlights, try using a temporary hair rinse made by Fanci-ful called "White Minx." It looks purple out of the bottle, but it takes the brassiness out of the colors and softens them. I think blonde & reddish highlights would be lovely! Good luck!

    • A. Hello Rhonda, That’s a great question! I am sorry you did not achieve the result you wanted. You’re right about timing; it does factor into hair color results. Reapplication of highlights is recommended every 2-3 months. When reapplying, I wouldn't recommend the Nice ‘n Easy Frost & Tip to be applied over previously highlighted hair. Of course, everyone’s hair and situation is different so let us help you with yours! Please give us a call at 1-800-252-4765 and speak with one of our Clairol Color Experts, Mon-Fri 8:30 AM -8:30 PM and Sat 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM EST. I hope this was helpful and we look forward to hearing from you soon! Cynthia
