I love this gate...it is very secure and durable. I love that it mounted to the wall for added safety...never had to worry about the gate becoming lose.

    • Spaces are only 3 inches apart, a tiny dog might be able to but not a small one.

    • Very possible for a small dog to get through the gate... we have a cat, and she has no problem slipping through to go up and down the stairs. I guess it would depend on how small the dog is... I would recommend a different gate that I saw, I can't remember the brand, but it was frosted looking plastic. It was one solid piece so there are no openings for the dog to get through.

    • The spaces between the bars are 2-3/4" wide. It would probably depend on the type of dog you have. But unless you have a baby Chihuahua or smaller than a Chihuahua I would say that it would not be able to get through the gate.

    • I would say 3in. max between the rails.

    • Yes if dog can fit thru a 2 3/4 inch slot.

    • A very small dog could get through it, but it depends on how far you have adjusted the sliding bars. If so - try adding plastic fencing between the sliding metal sections.

    • The width between slats is approximatley 3 inches. A cat could definitely squeeze through, maybe a very small dog.

    • We have a yorkshire terrier (a small dog) and she cannot get through the space between the bars of this gate. Not sure exactly how far apart they are, I did not measure but I would say maybe 4 inches or less. Good luck!

    • The widest gap is 2 3/4 inches. Some are smaller if you compress the gate down to fit your opening. But the widest gap is 2 3/4 inches.

The top of our stairs doesn't have a railing, it's wall on both sides. Will it still mount properly. I don't want to have to mount boards to the walls.

    • I used this gate for our entryway/hallway. We just used a stud finder to find studs that were almost directly across from each other. We had to install our gate at about an inch angle but it's hardly noticeable and it works perfectly. Because we had trim halfway up our wall, we had to use the metal piece that came with the gate to trace and cut wood to mount to the wall. HOWEVER because the hardware that attaches to the wall is only about 3/4" high it doesn't look bad. It helped that my husband traced the hardware and cut the exact shape of the hardware so we don't have an ugly block of wood nor do we have a big two by four or anything on our wall. He also said that if I wanted him too, he could even paint the half inch of wood the same color as the wall but I didn't find it necessary. But if you do not have trim halfway up your wall and you have studs directly or very close across from each other, than you won't have a problem at all.

    • Our top of stairs is just like yours. We have not had any issues. We have a half wall on one side and full wall on the other. No railing. HTH

    • It can definitely be mounted with walls on both sides. If you don't have studs to go into with the wood screws provided, use toggle bolts.

    • We had walls on each side as well, we used anchors that we bought to keep in held into place just like a stud would. It mounted perfectly to the walls

    • Yes, you'll need drywall anchors unless you can drive the screws into studs though.

    • Yes, the gate can be installed with walls on both sides provided it is installed into the studs of the wall and not into drywall only.

I have four and six year old boys. Their room is upstairs so I want them to be able to go up and down as they please... The gate is only for our 8 month old baby. Do you think my boys will be able to figure this gate out so I won't have to be opening it for them all the time? It will be at the top of the stairs. Thanks!
    by an anonymous customer 1/12/2012
    • Your 6 year old definitely could open it. It is almost effortless to open as long as you push on both the handle and press the button at the same time. If your 4 year old catches on to things well, he shouldn't have a problem with the gate.

    • I think they will. My 7 year old child has motor issues and can open the gate, but sometimes has difficulty. His friends can open the gate fine.

    • my 5 yr old can some times open but others not even i have a hard time with it. you have to squeeze the two blue buttons and push down on the back, i would recommend the wooden stair gate cheaper and much more useable.

    • It is a little difficult to maneuver - you have to have a wide enough grip to press buttons on either side of the handle and then push down. It's very kid proof! So I'm thinking they wouldn't be able to open it.

    • I have a 5 year old and she cannot open this gate at the top of the stairs. but we may be getting a new gate because a small plastic piece inside the handle has broken and we can no longer latch the gate. evenflo says this part is not replaceable.

    • The gate opens by pressing buttons on each side of the latch mechanism and then rocking it back. It's designed to prevent children 24 months and younger from opening it. An older child may be able to manipulate the latch mechanism to open/close the gate.
