Old flavor was excellent, new flavor is awful

Customer review by GeddyRulz

I’ve bought and used the Equate brand nicotine gum, “Fruit Wave” flavor, for years. (Yes, years! I know you’re only supposed to use it for 12 weeks after quitting smoking, but my doctor is aware of my heavy, long-term use of nicotine gum and approves of it over smoking. Besides, looking ‘round the Internet you’ll see that MANY people continue to chew nicotine gum for years and side effects appear non-existent.) Equate is much cheaper than Nicorette brand, but more importantly, I dislike the taste of Nicorette brand fruit flavor and LOVE the Equate brand fruit flavor. That is, I USED TO love the Equate fruit flavor! Equate has recently changed their fruit-flavored nicotine gum (“new enhanced flavor!” or some such banner claim) and now it tastes identical to Nicorette’s fruit flavor, which as I’ve said, I hate. Why’d you change it, Equate?? Just to mimic the taste of the biggest commercial brand? You had Nicorette beat in the areas of both price and taste, but now your gum tastes just as bad as theirs. I’ve managed to buy several older boxes of Equate gum from before the flavor switch – traveling to three different Wal-Marts to do so – but I think I’ve now depleted my area of the older boxes and I’m left with the awful “new” stuff. Going forward, I don’t know which brand/flavor nicotine gum I’ll be chewing, if any. Probably NOT yours. Your effort to become more like the big commercial brand has cost you at least one customer (me), and I hope if more customers complain you’ll consider a return back to the old flavor formula. I’ve gone on too long, but here’s two other things, for what they’re worth. First, I’ve read that Walgreen’s also changed the flavor of THEIR nicotine gum and the change was met with resounding boos from their customers. There’s a lesson here: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Second, how can this flavor of Nicorette’s – and now this flavor of yours, too – be described as “fruit”? Yes, there’s a vague citrus taste, but there’s also a very strong mint taste, which when added to the citrus flavor makes for an unusual and BAD combination. Yuck!

Two part review: 1. Complaint 2. Advice to users 1. COMPLAINT Why. Why did you do this to me? Most people I know who use a nicotine replacement (gum, lozenge) have one very specific form, brand, and flavor that works for them. Addiction is funny that way. Mine *WAS* Equate brand fruit flavor 2mg nicotine gum. I would have paid more for your brand than the Nicorette price just to have "The One" that worked for me to not smoke cigarettes. And now with this latest order, as I bit into it and wondered what this was, I had to come here to make sure I ordered the right thing. Sadly yes, I ordered right. You went all New Coke on this thing. You invented a new flavor. Why not simply call it something else? This is markedly different flavor from what it was. This was a popular brand, flavor, and strength... <insert dramatic stomp and arm crossing> 2. ADVICE With that off my chest now... Over the years, I have been in touch with many, many people who have stopped cigarettes with gum. Please let me warn you that it is very common to transfer your nicotine addiction from smokes to these. I have not had a cigarette in three years, and I still use nicotine gum. Now, I smoked 1-2 packs a day, and I now use 4-5 pieces of the 2MG gum. This is such a good change that my primary care provider says it's okay. I did not intend to become a lifer on nicotine gum though, and I seem to have. I started with 4MG gum, and I used it as directed for a heavy cigarette smoker. It was effective to taper down to... I think I went down to six pieces a day. Then I switched successfully to the 2MG gum, assuming that's a good move if I could make it. That's where I'm at now, around 5 pieces a day, of this 2MG gum. But again, three years... I'm grateful. I'm healthy, and I legitimately do not crave cigarettes after smoking for 25 years. Some people certainly CAN and DO use this product correctly, for cessation, and don't just become someone who smokes gum for ever. Just keep it in mind that you might "smoke nicotine gum" indefinitely; some of us do. I hope this helps someone. Good luck. It's a horrible addiction. I have only one regret in life, as I look back over it. For most mistakes, I learned and grew. I would do anything to go back and never start smoking.

Hello Walmart ... I hate your new Equate Fruit Chill 4 mg gum. It tastes like Nicorette. I even bothered to call your distributor to see if they had the old formula in stock. So sad ... I even drove to New York, Ogdensburg to get it. So disappointed ... in Ottawa, Canada :(

  • A. The new Equate is fruit/mint and is horrible. I am very upset with the switch of flavor. Hope they change it back...now what?

  • A. I agree: the Nicorette "fruit" flavor has more of a strong MINT taste than a fruit taste, and the combination of mint and fruit made it undesirable. Equate brand fruit gum tasted differently than Nicorette's fruit gum, and cost cheaper, too! It was a win-win. But unfortunately, Equate has recently CHANGED THE FORMULA of their fruit gum ("new enhanced taste" or some such banner claim on the box), and now it closely mimics the taste of Nicorette's fruit/mint gum. In my opinion: YUCK! So my answer is: newer boxes of Equate fruit wave, with the banner along the top, will taste like Nicorette (fruit/mint). If you can find any older boxes without the banner along the top, then it won't taste like mint. Good luck. They're almost completely phased-out by now. I myself have depleted my three local Wal-Marts of the older boxes. I HATE the newer, Nicorette-like flavor.
