A real fast wheeler - go getter of a microwave

Purchased this for my son, who is a 18 wheeler mechanic in Indiana. The shop had no where to heat / cook lunch or anything. This is a very welcomed addition to his work station - right on top of the 3.2 refrig and shop fan on top of the microwave, (all ordered at the same time). Thank You again WalMart for having ship to store free - sure makes it easy to be able to send something as a surprise or anything!

Don't waste your cash. It might seem economical, but it's not. Within 3 weeks of purchase, the plastic on the buttons bubbles/peels and you can't tell what button you're pushing. We were willing to deal with that, but last night I went to melt chocolate in a anchor hocking plastic bowl that specifically says "FOR MICROWAVE OVENS" and pushed the start button for a 30 second timer. At 22 seconds remaining, I heard sizzling and a pop, and I looked over to see sparks dancing throughout the microwave. Panicked, I jabbed stop and grasped the cord and pulled it out of the wall, calling to my husband and waking him out of a sound sleep. Close inspection showed no signs of damage to either microwave or bowl, so he plugged it back in, pushed the button, and in 7 seconds, it did it again. We turned it off again, but, as before, no damage. He did it again, and the 3rd time it ran through the entire cycle with no problem. Same with the fourth. By that time, the chocolate was melted, but it was not hot. I won't use it again.

I picked this unit cause of the pull type door handle, didn't want the push button latch cause in my past microwaves they break too soon, its the only model they had with the pull type door handle. Its rated at 1000 watts where my old microwave was also rated at 1000 watts, but it takes twice as long to cook the same foods in this microwave than the old one, plus its too small inside, its deep enough but NOT wide enough. Not pleased cause its not powerful and not big enough, and the touch screen pad takes more effort to push the buttons. Its a cheap-generic microwave, made a mistake buying it.

I loved this microwave when I first bought it. Unfortunately after about 4 months I started to have trouble with the buttons working. Today, the clear button quit working all together. I'm just glad I purchased the product replacement plan and will be able to purchase a different microwave.

Got this model (but in black) as an exchange for the .9cft Emerson microwave after the door melted on it while making a bag of microwave popcorn. This one also has issues, and I will be returning it as well and going with a different brand. Two different models both with issues from the same store (Fort Gratiot). Will not be purchasing anything from Emerson again, and may be avoiding the Fort Gratiot Walmart all together after this, we'll see how they handle the situation. Best of luck to everyone else.

I bought this at WalMart yesterday bec. my existing Emerson microwave (MW8115SS, which I loved, but is not being sold any longer) stopped working after almost 10 years and several moves in my car. I wish Emerson still sold this model or at least had a replacement model that was very similar, as this MW1161SB is just awful. 1. When it is running, the microwave is very loud and annoying, almost sounding like there is something wrong with it, but no, it's just loud. Very bad and big flaw in design. 2. Even though it is 1,000 watts, it takes much longer to cook food than my earlier Emerson 1,000 watt machine. 3. The inside of the machine is too small. 4. Buttons on front panel are too small and hard to see and have to be pushed harder than should be necessary. 5. The beep when the cooking cycle stops is VERY loud, almost hurts your ears. I should have looked at these reviews first, but I was desperate to get a microwave since I use one so often. I will be returning this one. I don't know what one I will be getting. Any suggestions?

I need a new microwave, I've had my Emerson microwave (white edition) since approximately 2001 (or longer), and I have never had a problem with it. My microwave doesn't have a handle so the "recess button" to open has stopped functioning correctly. I can still push it really hard and pull the door open, but that is not what I want to do. The pre-set buttons worked wonderfully for me, from popping popcorn to heating beverages. The only food that I actually cook in the microwave is vegetables. Other than that, I use it for warming things, but I MOSTLY use my George Foreman Grill for warming (wrap things in foil and you get the best re-warmed food in the world - the original texture doesn't change at all - YUMMY), but I digress - the reason I am writing this review is that I really, really, liked my microwave, and wanted to purchase another one, and y'all have officially scared me. So when I go to Walmart, I will definitely be looking around before I drop this in my basket. That's all I wanted to say.

I bought this microwave about a year ago for my ice cream shop and it works great ! We only use it to heat brownies, sauces etc. but it gets used regularly, 7 days/week and no problems whatsoever. I chose this particular model because of the door handle. I hate the push button openers ! And the stainless steel finish makes it look very professional. Our home microwave died a few months ago, so we replaced it with another one of these. We cook popcorn, baked potatoes, frozen vegies, thaw meats and heat our coffee in this little guy. So far...no complaints. It also gets used on a daily basis and works great ! Now....we've expanded our store to include pizza & subs...so I am purchasing a THIRD one today !

I bought this microwave July 26,2012. It died Dec. 3, 2012. That is less than six months of usage! The reviews are correct: The microwave is loud (not a problem for me), the buttons are a little harder to push in than normal (not a problem for me), the beeping for the timer is annoyingly loud (somewhat an issue for me) and it seems to lose power the older it gets. When we first bought it it worked great. Two months ago I noticed I had to cook things longer in it to get them done. Then a week before it died, it started clicking, dimming the lights in the kitchen, and creeping me out. My husband used it to warm his coffee (on 30 seconds as he has done since we bought it) and it gave its death rattle and zap, then it was dead. I did not get the warranty (I forgot about it) so I'm out the $77 and a microwave. Although this microwave was very stylish in its appearance, I place durability, functionality and quality above appearance. I will not buy Emerson again.

First let me point out that people complaining about the 1) buttons being hard to push and 2) the buttons starting to peel after a short time...here's the deal. There is a thin film membrane over the buttons and read out that you are SUPPOSE TO PEAL OFF. It's just there to protect the finish during shipping. Once pealed off you will find the buttons easier to press. Microwave is slightly noisier than most. And it beeps 5 times really loud when something is done. No way to control the loudness. Wish it was a little quieter or adjustable. Build quality seems ok. I like that this one has a handle. Outside appearance is nice. Cooks really well and inexpensive. Worth a look!

I bought this to replace a GE microwave (Paid around $60) that lasted 6-7 years and finally the open button broke. This time I wanted a pull handle and stainless steel to match my other appliances. I've had this for about a month and it looks great. It VERY loud though, much louder than my old one and it does take longer to cook food. I would normally steam veggies for about 3.5 min in my old one and it takes 5 min in this one. Next time I will definitely splurge on a nice $2-300 microwave!

  • A. The Emerson MW1161SB Microwave Oven can indeed be used as a stand-alone timer as explained on page 10 of the Owner's Manual. ==================== KITCHEN TIMER function ==================== Allows the timer to be used without producing any microwave energy. 1. Press the KITCHEN TIMER button on the front panel. 2. Key-in the number of minutes desired. 3. Press the START button. The unit will beep five times when the desired countdown period has expired. The direct answer to your question is NO. The KITCHEN TIMER function cannot be used symultaneously while food is cooking. I tried doing this myself but the unit only permits its timer to be used while cooking or not cooking but not both those modes at the same time.

  • A. Your question's unclear and ambiguous as stated. The front panel display timer counts down while the oven's in operation cooking the contents inside. The unit's timer is NOT INTENDED to be used as a general purpose stand-alone timer. Beware! Operating a microwave oven without anything inside (containing water) to heat will eventually destroy the unit! All microwave ovens work by heating the water molecules contained in food very rapidly. It heats only the water content not the food itself. But in doing so the water vaporizes into steam which is what actually heats the food itself.
