About the author

Biography of Paolini, Christopher

Christopher Paolini was born in Southern California on November 17, 1983, but grew up primarily in Paradise Valley, Montana. He was home schooled and at the age of 15, graduated from high school through an accredited correspondence course at American School in Chicago, Illinois. He decided to write a book and after three years of writing and editing, Eragon was self-published in 2001. The Paolini family spent the following year promoting the book themselves by giving presentations to the local library and high school and then eventually branching out to libraries, bookstores, and schools across the United States.

After his step-son read a copy of the book, author Carl Hiaasen brought Eragon to the attention of publisher Alfred A. Knopf, who acquired the rights to publish Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance Cycle in 2003. The other books in the cycle include Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance. Eragon was made into a movie in December 2006.

Book description

Darkness falls…despair abounds…evil reigns…

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn’t know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle–one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king’s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life...

Rated 4.1 out of 5★ by 7reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Eldest This is an excellent book. It has some very unexpected twists. I can barely wait for the 3rd book to come out in Sept. 03/21/2008
Rated 5 out of 5★ by looked on other sites at prices for this book. WalMart had the best price! 12/03/2011
Rated 5 out of 5★ by I love this book!!!!!! It's awesome. I dont know why anyone wouldn't like it!!!!!! Its filled w/ adventure and romance. It's very exiting! All my friends love it too!!!!!! If you have read Eragon then PLEASE read Eldest! 12/09/2007
Rated 1 out of 5★ by One Star: Because It Just Doesn't Go Lower It is a bad book. The style has improved slightly over Eragon, but Eldest has other more serious problems.-The most likeable character is probably Nasuada, and she's barely in the book. Everyone else is insufferable. Roran is stupid (like an actual real life dumb sort of person). There is no good reason he would be leading horse, let alone people. Eragon, frankly, is so arrogant (as well as the elves) that is painful to read anything with him in it.-Plot holes and big ones. I don't want to give out any spoilers but as soon as you read maybe 1/4 of the way through this you'll see what I'm talking about.-Zero character arch. Nobody changes except in a superficial physical way. Roran gets scars. Eragon, too. And pointy ears.-What kind of morality is this? The "heroes" do some rather awful things (i.e. murder. several times). But because they're teh speshul heroes it's OK. Bad guy kills a dragon rider loooong ago and it's more eviller, though he hasn't really done anything manifestly evil since then.Anyhoo, that's just a few of mine. If you read you can find your own! 09/19/2007
Rated 4 out of 5★ by great read This is the second book in the series and once again you go on some wonderful adventures. It was a bit of a slow read because you were jumping from place to place but over all it was a wonderful continuation to Eragon. 01/20/2008
Rated 4 out of 5★ by Good Book I thought this was a good but. It was a very dark novel and has some unexspected things happen. The story gets stranger and stranger as the book goes along.I would recomend this book to people who like fantasy novels. Be prepared though it is not amything like the characters from the Eragon movies. 12/07/2007
