Eagle Claw 8'6" Black Eagle 2pc Fly Rod

I purchased mine in the store. They had four in the rack and one had a broken tip. I picked out the best one of the remaining three and am very happy with the purchase. Nice feeling action and balance. I have a few vintage and new Eagle Claw rods and for the money, I prefer them over similarly priced makes and models.

After a vacation fly fishing with my Dad I came home with a serious itch. I had my old fiberglass rods but had spent the week fishing with one of his graphite rods and was very impressed. So I remembered that Walmart had at least one graphite flyrod the last time I was there, so I went and checked it out. While there I stumbled upon the Black Eagle model and looked it over, a lot. The Black Eagle model had all the details of a high end rod, carbon fiber reel seat, aluminum hardware, nice cork and a clean overall appearance. The other graphite rod had a plastic reel seat and plastic hardware. I'm not one to knock effective cheap products so seeing as they were $20 each, I figured I'd just buy both and see which is better. The other graphite rod was only a 7' and was much stiffer. It casts reasonably well, though needs a bit of a heavy hand, but to be fair I believe I was using a double taper line with it. The Black Eagle on the other hand takes a softer hand, it's relatively whippy at the end and rewards finesse with beautiful casts. I have WF5 floating line on it now on a trusty old medalist reel and I have to say I can't wait for my Dad to try this setup out against his expensive rods. I actually went back and bought the other Black Eagle that they had at Walmart, just in case anything happened to mine, $20 seems like a good insurance plan to me. All in all, I feel as though I got a $100+ rod on clearance. I really hope that they continue to make these rods. Just in case I somehow break two :)

So I picked up this rod as a challenge to myself to put together the nicest looking and cheapest flyrod setup I could. Picked it up for $20 at my local store and paired it with a Shakespeare 1094 single action fly reel and line from Cabela's. Although I underlined it due to its moderate action it is really forgiving for light tippet. I love this rod for dry flies and small nymphs in streams. Wouldn't use it in faster water or to throw anything larger then a sz 8 bugger. As I said earlier, I bought the rod for the looks and have been impressed by the performance. The cork grip, carbon fiber reel seat, and blank all look very nice. The guides are nice snake style but the stripping guide is die cut and has some signs of rust after a year. But as my beater rod, I wouldn't change a thing. I grab this 90% of the time over my more expensive rods, even when fishing with friends.
