I bought this for my Dad to keep his bedroom warm and give him a fire to watch. His room is 200+ square ft. and it is keeping his room nice and warm. He loves the flames. Several family members have decided to buy one after seeing his. Works just like any other electric heater but looks a lot nicer. I order the small size and was afraid it would be too small but it wasn't. Looks great in the room. Also a lot safer for his grandkids when they visit.

Due to lack of product information on Walmart.com, I had many questions and concerns about this heater before I bought it. So before buying it on Walmart.com, I scanned the web for more information. This Duraflame stove heater comes in 3 sizes, and many different colors, but Walmart.com only sells it in black. I purchased the medium-sized unit; it is Model #DFS-550-0. It's about 20 inches inches wide, and 23.5 inches high. Please note that this model is 1500 watts. It does NOT come with a remote. If you search on the web, there are many other merchants who sell the models that DO come with a remote. For a about $15 more, I could have purchased a model with remote from a different merchant, but I chose to go with Walmart due to their great return policy. I simply wanted the liberty of being able to return the item easily if it didn't work out for some reason...and Walmart allows for 90-day returns. In my estimation, it's like an insurance policy. Now, onto the heater itself. It was delivered in the manufacturer's original box, and the box has open handles on other side for easy carrying. The box is not heavy, but it is large. The heater was packed well inside, but still had a minor dent on the posterior edge, but nothing that is noticeable. The cabinet/casing of the stove is made of metal. Again, I purchased the MEDIUM size, which differs from the photo on this website. The medium-sized stove has a door with a silver knob, and a framed cabinet door. The door has a decorative frame. It looks like framed glass, but I believe it's heavy plastic. The door opens to reveal a faux log set, as well as all of the adjustment controls. The controls are located on the interior front panel...you have to open the door to access the controls. This unit does not require any assembly; it arrives in one piece, and you just plug it in. It is also light in weight; you can easily move it from room-to-room. The flame is not very realistic, but it has a dimmer control so you can adjust it to suit your taste. The heater also has a thermostat knob which allows you adjust the heat from low to high, or anywhere in between. The heat comes out from a lower front grate. I am very impressed with the amount of heat this emits, as I did not expect the heater to be as effective as it is. We have an open floorplan (kitchen/dining room/living room), and within minutes, you could feel the heat rise in the entire area. It emits a comforting heat, similar to that of a fireplace. I enjoy this type of heat much more than the heat produced from the numerous ceramic heaters I've owned over the years. As far as noise is concerned, you can hear the blower, but it is quieter than most of the portable ceramic heaters I've owned. It can be characterized as "white noise". I thought I would use this in the bedroom, but decided to use this one in the kitchen. Aesthetically, it makes a place look and feel cozy. The majority of reviews read across the web indicate that it is an energy-efficient unit as evidenced by customers' low electric bills. But another reviewer here claims that her electric bill skyrocketed with minimal usage, so I'm not sure. It might also depend on the age of your home and it's wiring. However, I don't plan on leaving it running all of the time; I think the secret is to use it strategically, and only when you need it, just like any other heater. All in all, if you can live without a remote, this appears to be a good buy. Once you get one, you will start thinking of other areas of your home where you could use another. What I like most about these types of stove heaters is that they look like a piece of furniture, and they nicely fill an odd corner, space, or wall. So while they are more expensive than a conventional heater, they serve multiple purposes. They are heaters, mood-setters, and also serve as an decorative accessory in your home.

I read lots about this before purchasing and thought would try for the great price. Purchased the small one. Recieved in 4 days paid only 97 cents shipping too. It is amazing, plugged it in turned on the two switches and instant heat. Just as good as it gets. Using by the window in the living room works perfectly. Does not need anything special, works on the hard floor or rugs safely. Do plug directly into outlet and not use extension cord. Thanks great item, great price and .97 cents shipping. Some are charging over 18 dollars ship for same item. Works for us, thanks so much Walmart, perfect.

This is everything "SpendtotheEnd" says. I do think the flame effect does look good though. I had some small logs I sat on top of the fake red embers and now it looks pretty good. I felt no heat from that part and so far so good. I am not responsible if you try this. I only used three small pieces of maple that had been cut up from the storms here in Connecticut. It's been a month and it's been ok. Knock on wood. Make sure you clean the lint out every month or so just in case.

    • A. When used as supplemental heat in a room that is approximately 400 sqft or smaller, this stove can be an efficient and cost effective zone heating solution.

    • A. These heaters are fan-forced heat, and they are the same wattage as many other portable heaters on the market today (up to 1500watts). If you leave it on all of the time, you will likely see an increase in your electric bill. I would use the heater only when needed. You can use the flame, alone, which will use much less wattage than if you run the heater component.

    • A. If it costs .25 cents an hr to run this heater, times by 168 hrs a week that would equal to about $42 a week. I think it would be expensive to use this for heat.

    • A. I saw this on QVC the other day. The Duraflame Rep said it costs about 25 cents a day to run this heater. We have been thinking about getting one for our cool bedroom. Wal Mart has the best price.

    • A. Short answer: No. Longer answer: Natural gas is cheaper heat than electricity. All electric heaters are equally energy efficient; the $20 heater gives you the exact same heat as the $500 heater. Using it to just heat your room and letting the rest of the house get chilly? Ok, that would be cost effective.
