I got a bad batch from Duracells main competitor back in Junior high many years ago that were dead out of the package and from that point on I have used Duracell exclusively for about 25 years now. Keep in mind I have used literally thousands for work and play since that time with no issues to speak of. About a month ago I had some brand new Duralock Duracells leak in my kids two way radios... I thought wow that is rare and wrote it off and threw them away. A few weeks later a headlamp was ruined that sat inside my backpack inside the house from a different package of batteries and that is when I decided to check out if others are having this problem as well and sure enough they are. Well the last straw was yesterday when I went to use my 450 dollar laser and you guessed it I had 3 Duracell Duralocks "vent" their poison all over the place. I have lost all faith in their product which is rather unfortunate because I wish they could be my lifetime brand but nor more. I called customer support and was told in very poor english "this was not common at all and that they would pass it along to the team" and then began to tell me all of the things the batteries are not designed to do or else they will self vent and I won't bore you with the comments but can tell you if you follow all of the rules they cannot be used in a normal Earth type environment. I am pulling Duracell out of anything that has any kind of value and that I cannot stand to be without for 2.5 months at Duracells warranty department to maybe or maybe not be compensated on. You had a great thing going Duracell but I don't know if it is the Duralock change or what but something DID change and you should fess up and fix it...you are after all a premium tier product.

I'm finally down to my last two Duracell AA batteries from a bulk pack I bought a while back. I've only been using them in very inexpensive items for about a year due to the fact that, not only have I found then to leak about twenty-five percent of the time, but their performance has been horrible as well. I had my first hint of trouble about 1 1/2 years ago when I noticed that the Duracell AA batteries in the indoor part of my wireless weather station constantly needed replacing. After replacing them a couple times one of the batteries I had only installed a few weeks earlier leaked and ruined the monitor. I was not happy. I wrote it off at first to bad luck but as the problems with short-life and leakage occurred in two other devices I switched to Ray-O-Vac and have been very pleased with their performance. My advice stems from an experience I had with a flashlight. (the kind attached to a headband to provide hands-free lighting) I use it quite often, and one day when I turned it on the light was very dim. I knew I had replaced the batteries recently, and when I opened it up the insides and batteries were covered in fresh battery gunk. I needed to use the light so I quickly - but thoroughly - cleaned it with vinegar and baking soda and put in new batteries. Right before I put the batteries in I cleaned it one additional time, but I was not quite as thorough removing all the baking soda/vinegar residue. This actually turned out to be a good thing because about a month later, once again I noticed the light was dim, and once again I opened it to find leaking batteries. (This was my official Last-straw moment with Duracells) However this time after I removed the batteries I was pleasantly surprised to find that the baking soda/vinegar residue had all but prevented the battery acid from damaging the battery compartment. So now, whenever I put batteries in a low-tech device - especially one that sits unused for long periods of time, I brush the interior of the battery compartment with a baking soda/vinegar solution and let it dry before installing the batteries. All I know is that it at least gives me a little piece of mind that, if the batteries do leak, hopefully the damage will be mitigated somewhat.
