    What's a Tablet PC?
Tablet PCs are compact, ultra-portable entertainment devices that let you read email, surf the Internet, read eBooks, view photos, play games, listen to music and watch video files. Most tablets are based on a smaller operating system, which allows you to purchase and download additional applications from supported stores. Tablet PCs do not have a CD/DVD drive and will not run Microsoft Windows or its applications. Tablet PCs function as a secondary device for casual entertainment purposes, and are not meant to replace a computer. They are ideal for use around the home and on the go with WiFi or 3-4G mobile broadband connections (pay as you go, contract may be required for service).

nabi DreamTab 8" Tablet for Kids

I purchased the DreamTab as an upgrade for my daughter from her nabi 2 which she has used every single day for the past (almost) two years. So far we have had the DreamTab for 2 weeks and my daughter (9yrs old) is enjoying it very much. She has only used her nabi 2 a couple of times but only because the DreamTab's battery went dead. There were several selling points for me with the DreamTab. 1. More storage 2. Larger screen size 3. Dream Pro Studio drawing app 4. The more secure way for my daughter to be introduced into internet social media using nabi Konnect and nabigator. Here are some Pros and Cons that I have found with the DreamTab so far. I will edit my review after the first OTA update has been released as I am sure things will improve since this was the very first run on this tablet. Pros: 1. Nice Preloaded apps. Some of my daughters favorite ones so far are the Jungle Book app and the Repunzel app. The graphics are awesome! 2. Easy to set up. 3. Comes with a digital stylus 4. Speakers are on the front! 5. Not heavy 6. Comes with silicone bumper 7. The packaging gave a very nice first impression. I won't spoil the surprise when you open the box but just know there is one :) 8. Has Google Play Store preloaded! 9. Has a micro SD card slot so I can store all our media files on the external storage instead of the internal storage. Cons: 1. Several of the preloaded apps are listed as "coming soon". These apps are on the home screens of nabi mode so you will need to explain to your child in advance that these apps are not available. The most important one that is "coming soon" is the one that sold me on the DreamTab to begin with. The Dream Pro Studio app. I hope this will be made available very soon for my daughter since this is one thing she does ask me about constantly already and it has only been 2 weeks. 2. Just a personal preference but I do not like that my daughter can not personalize the wallpaper on the DreamTab. She is use to being able to change the wallpaper on her nabi 2 so the fact that this option is not available on her DreamTab was a little disappointing to her. I am hoping this will be fixed with a future update. Fingers crossed :) 3. The battery life on the DreamTab is less than desirable. We seem to get anywhere from 3-4 hrs on one full charge. (Main reason for only giving this tablet 4 out of 5 stars.) 4. Nabigator app has not been made available in the Play Store yet so the only way you can use the nabi Konnect is if you know someone else who has the DreamTab. 5. Since the DreamTab is close to the same price as the 32GB nabi XD, I would have expected the DreamTab to have more than 16GB of storage. Almost half of the 16GB of storage space is used up with the preloaded content, Android Operating system and Factory reset data. Since all of the cons we have found (minus storage space) can be resolved through an OTA update I still highly recommend this tablet. I can not wait for the first OTA update to be released so my daughter can get the full benefits of this tablet!

Not a worthy successor to the Nabi 2

I currently own a Nabi 2 for my 4yr old son, thus this was purchased as an upgrade. First impressions: The demo unit was already broken after 3 days at Target, but who knows what happened. Once home we open it up and are welcomed to the best packaging ever. But you have to wonder how much of your $300 (Tax inc.) went into to the box, too much I'm sure. The tablet itself has a familiar bumper, but it's super low quality compared to the Nabi 2. This one is made from two pieces of molded plastic that has a rough seem in the middle all the way around. Thus, you feel an almost sharp edge (not actually sharp) when holding the unit. Also, the Nabi 2 not only was smooth, but had really excellent corner protection. This unit has terrible corner protection, the one corner is 90% exposed due to the stylus mount in the area. The front has speakers, which is great but the cover is rather loose and was already feeling like it would come off due to it's poor design. Starting it up we are greeted with the need to do an online setup, however the WIFI kept crashing! We thought it was a bug that would go away once updated. After about an hour we have it on the update sequence, however it froze for about 20minutes and we had to do it all over again. I was able to fully update it on the 2nd try, but WIFI is still dicey. I should note that we've updated the Nabi 2 no problems and WIFI is strong. The interface looks nicer, and is a bit faster. However there are lots of little bugs, and incomplete features (some apps say "coming soon" when you open them.....) Conclusion: --It's 50% more expensive than Nabi 2. ++The screen is MUCH nicer in resolution/viewing angle/color --Rubber case feels like a cheap knock off you bought on ebay for $5 shipped. --WIFI is terrible compared to Nabi 2 (Range and consistency) --Less apps, granted many are just the free editions anyways --Buggy, one day during my testing I put them both away 100% charge and the next day Nabi 2 = 97% Dreamtab = Fully drained. I would skip this knockoff Dreamworks tab and wait until the Nabi 3 launches personally. We just returned ours.

    It's a family Nexus

This is actually better, in my opinion. I had a Nexus for a few months last year, before I got it wet in a bad way. The screen resolution on this particular Nabi is comparable to the Nexus and that says a lot. AND it comes with a gel case and stylus in the (artful & amazing) box. The stylus has varying degrees of pressure too, like a Wacom! The main draw is the "kid mode". My 4yo and 11yo both can't put this down. It has apps designed for them, for drawing, taking pictures, making movies, watching cartoons - my 4yo is looking at games in his own kind of kid's version of Google Play. I think there's only 5 or 6, but it's still amazing. I don't have to worry about creepers or inapproriate (nudity, bloody violence) content coming down the pipe. I think I heard someone playing Dig! this morning (we played it on the Ouya last year). My favorite part: I can switch to "daddy mode" with a password, swipe past the Nabi management apps and it's like having my Nexus back. Outstanding. I haven't had to use the Nabi support stuff yet, but it looks good. If you have young ones, this is far better than turning them loose on your tab and finding your screen full of Candy Crush and Angry Birds pay-to-play garbage.

I bought three, one for my 10 year old, one for my 7 year old, and one for my 3 year old. They are IN LOVE with it and I can't get them off it. Their favorite game is the Wings Challenge which is 100% educational. I often can't get them off of it! I love it has the time limits so when the tablet shuts down I am not the bad guy. You can run the chore list without coins so I reward them with more Nabi time. My husband and I especially love that when the kids are in bed we can go into parent mode and have our own tablets! I highly recommend getting this for any child! The Nabi Pass is also a must it cost $4.99 a month BUT it will cover up to 5 Nabis on the same account. It give unlimited access to the Wing Challenge and unlimited educational videos and it changes content every month!
