Dixon Ticonderoga Erasable Colored Pencils, 2.6mm Lead, 12 count 5 5 1 1
A Pleasant Surprise This dozen set of Dixon Ticonderoga Erasable Colored Pencils (officially "Erasable 'Checking' Pencils") is a pleasant surprise in an overcrowded market of colored pencils, and are constructed much like standard no. 2 pencils that happen to have colored leads ("color cores"). The tip-end erasers work quite well erasing the colors laid down. The color palette is sophisticated and includes earth tones such as Terra Cotta or Tuscan Red, a change from the usual "kiddie" spectrum plus brown that typifies the standard American 12-count colored pencil. The pencils are sturdy and can be sharpened "short" for the hardest possible point, or "long" to use the sides of the color cores to leave shades of color. They are not afraid of a gentle electric sharpening, but the school crank style of sharpener should be avoided -- a small handheld sharpener is the best. Two minor shortcomings -- the colors these pencils lay down is not as deep as some of the colors from standard colored pencil makers such as Prang, Crayola or Cra-Z-Art. The cores measure 2.7 millimeters in diameter, while many or most competitor pencils are 3.3mm. Neither of these is a huge drawback, in my opinion. If you want your colored set to consist of only a dozen pencils, it's hard to do better than these! And with proper care, they will last and last. (Even after the erasers have worn, any non-latex eraser from a good-quality pencil will suffice.)Why the term "checking"? Probably because the original Carmine Red and Blue colors were used by editors and teachers in "checking", grading or revising work, and the name hung on. Having these in multiple colors is a blessing. These pencils were made in Mexico. 08/29/2011
