Best 8" Windows Tablet Currently

I purchased the 32gb version from my local Walmart. I am very familiar with the tablet world. I have been using the ipad mini for the most part of this past year. Why, because it is a good tablet and lack of options. I have to note that I have tried but did not like the Galaxy tab 3 8-inch model. Enter Dell with what I would consider the best sub-10 inch Windows tablet. Like I said, I was very happy with the iPad mini as a consumption device. But I had grown bored and was looking for something that would allow me to also be productive. The Dell tablet has filled that void. Granted I doubt I will be generating any reports or spreadsheets, but what this little device allows me to do is tweak docs and spreadsheets without having to boot up my laptop. Battery life is good...I would say its about 90% of the battery life I would get with the iPad mini. But that is based on my usage. The screen is very nice to view. I have left mine set at default because having brightness set real high actually bothers my eyes. The screen is crisp and I would say is better than the screen on the iPad mini (first gen mini). Keep in mind that this tablet is a full blown computer in a tablet body. This means you have everything available to you. The processor is really fast. I have tested it to determine when I would start seeing lag. I tried having multiple flash heavy web sites and apps open in the background while playing graphics heavy video games... no lag that I was able to detect. The tablet has a quality build. I would say close if not on par with the iPad. Yes the iPad uses a different material of construction so my comment is relative. The app store is very good and growing. While it is not as developed as apples or androids, it is improving at a very fast pace. With the exception of a few games I played on my iPad mini, I have found all the apps or equivalent in the windows app store. Not only that, remember you can install actual software programs and don't have to rely on an app to be available. Overall, I would recommend this tablet. Walmart has even reduced the price of the tablet by $20. Which makes an already reasonably price tablet even better. I only knocked the overall score by one star because I feel they should've offered the micro SD adapter in the package. Aside from that, they have set the bar high with this tablet. Its a keeper for me!

Picked this up Black Friday for only $229. It functions extremely well as a Windows 8.1 tablet. Came with 8; upgrade to 8.1 was easy. Comes with real versions of Word and Excel which is a plus for me. But to my surprise it also functions extremely well as a desktop when paired with a Plugable USB Docking station. Using a Plugable UD-3900 docking station, a 19 inch monitor, usb keyboard & usb mouse turns the tablet into a dual monitor desktop - tablet is monitor 1 and 19 inch is monitor 2. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPPY4m8iY0k for Plugable "plug" from the manufacturer on this setup. Only con is the storage on this model, only 32GB, and the OS/installed software consumes 2/3's of the storage leaving you only about 10GB for personal use. I added a 64GB Sandisk Ultra micro SD to increase personal local storage. Use Microsoft Skydrive and this is an all around solution that really works for web, email and MS Office work. Mobile when I want but I can use a real monitor/keyboard/mouse for desktop work.

A user in the past of Kindle Fire, Surface and they are all now on eBay or given to family. This device is responsive, incredibly worthy of the Windows 8 experience w/ touch. The ability to have full office, along with no site being empty (this device allows Flash), and lastly can have any software I like on this machine. I've used this to watch video (ESPN 3), Xbox Video, and it was really nice to throw on some music & videos on an SD card and take with me wherever I like. This device in early days is very good!

I want to have the capabilities of a smart phone with apps, to get apps that are commonly available on any phone. Is this tablet capable or is it just Microsoft based? Ex Google Play, Skype, Netflix, Angry Birds, etc.

  • A. Ther is a 3rd part app to access Google Music. Skype is intergrated. There is apps for Netflix and Angry Birds. If you want a tablet for apps, go with a Nexus 7 or iPad mini. This is a PC.

  • A. Being that this is a Windows tablet, you will have access to everything in the Windows ecosystem (apps, programs, etch). With that said, Google Play is part of the Google ecosystem. I haven't done it yet, but others have posted in reviews that they have installed iTunes. As for your more standards apps like Skype, Netflix, etc...they are available as either apps or web sites.

  • A. Google play is for Android devices only. This version of Windows 8 is not the RT version. You should be able to install Skype, Netflix, and possible apps like Angry birds, but also run full programs.

  • A. Yes. The apps you cited (Skype, Netflix, Angry Birds) are all available from the Windows store, as are popular apps like Facebook, Twitter, ESPN, Kindle, etc. Of course Microsoft also provides its own optional apps for everyday tasks like mail, calendar, notes, camera, photos, maps, web browsing, music, etc. In addition to these tablet/phone apps, you can also use traditional Windows desktop software (i.e. anything you have on your current laptop or desktop will work, including Office, Photoshop, iTunes, and whatever web browser you like). Google Play apps and services are only available on Android devices (just as Apple's iOS apps are only compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod devices).

  • A. It runs full Windows 8.1, the same as your desktop runs. Which means if you can put it on your desktop, you can put it on this tablet.

  • A. Yes but this is trial version and different sights suggest that you uninstall it and get another free version. I have been using the free version of avg for years now on over 50 computers and have had no problems with virus make sure to do a scan and data update often. You can download a free 30 day trial buy version first but you can immediately uninstall it from the control panel then it will offer you the free version.

  • A. You don't need it. Windows 8.1 offers the same level of secruity that any 3rd party vendor would and it's free. The metro apps are also all certified by Microsoft. Just turn on Windows Defender, the fire wall and all updates on.

  • A. No it comes with Windows defender which so far has worked well for me. I did inquire to installing McAfee but was advised by my internet provider not to because McAfee is still working out the kinks with compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. Bit like I said, defender is working well for me.

  • A. The tablet will not include McAfee. This is a 3rd party software and would need to be downloaded and purchased.
