Rated 5 out of 5 by Dell Actually Sucks at Marketing This laptop doesn't photograph well. It's much, much more beautiful in real life than it appears here. Applications launch pretty much instantly on the i7 model and it's thinner than one might expect after reading all of the "It's not an ultrabook RAWR!" reviews you can find scattered across the internet. The instant on technology from intel is also far better than I expected. The computer usually turns on in about 1.2 seconds. I saw complaints about the wifi adapter before I bought this, but I have had no such issues. I've seen a lot of complaints about bloatware also, but I have actually never seen a computer so bloatware free. What little bloatware does exist is actually quite good (an application that lets you make recovery media, a store to upgrade internal components, a driver updater, etc). There are a few legitimate issues of course. The keys are unusually spaced out, but it only took a few minutes to get used to. The screen is also quite glossy and therefore hard for people around you to see from angles. The skullcandy speakers are also very cheap and quiet, but I tend to use headphones anyway. Overall, I had thought I was buying a cheap, low-quality computer to carry around for school, but this machine is far better than Dell claimed. Dell needs to spend a little more time on marketing their devices so that people understand how good they really are (and make their computers more photogenic). 05/02/2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Inspiron 14z Ultrabook Over the years I have used Dell computers on a regular basis through my place of employment. It was this experience, generally pretty good experience, that led me to look at purchasing the Ultrabook. Unfortunately, I have been seriously disappointed with the unit. Having purchased it for a family member who is attending University at the start of this school year (September) I looked for compact size, performance and an an additional video card to help with 3D images etc.. The unit works well for the application when it works! I am now shipping the computer back again for further service work as the system wont recognize the battery. As a result the computer only works when plugged in to the power cord. We have had a new hard drive and motherboard already so Dell has essentially rebuilt the unit in the 8 months we have had it. When you drop this kind of coin on what is supposed to be a higher end system you expect that you get a quality product. I don't feel this way anymore. The service provided by Dell has been good overall, maybe they are good at it for a reason as they have to fix them all the time? Overall I am pretty disappointed in the overall build quality where what is supposed to be a higher end unit fails 3-4 times in less than 8 months. Now I am really concerned that I should have purchased the extended warranty if these types of problems continue. Makes it really hard for me to recomend this product to anyone. 04/30/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Really great! I bought this laptop knowing that other people didn't like it. They said that they had problems when opening the computer for the second time, that it stuck on the Dell Logo. Well, i had this problem, but doing some researches on the internet, i found how to resolve the problem. Don't loose hope!! I love the size, how fast it is! It's a product to buy! 04/22/2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Pathetic Laptop I got this Laptop around a week back. I read Couple of bad reviews about the laptop but thought that Dell would have learnt from its mistake and improved upon it but Dell failed me completely. It been only a week but its taking me around 10-12 mins to reach the Windows Login. After turning on the laptop, i see the windows welcome screen and then it goes black for 5 mins and then comes the Windows login page. After entering my password it takes around 5 mins for it to shows me the windows explorer. Pathetically Slow and awful. Never expected this from Dell. 04/08/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great machine easy to work on Even though battery replacement is a little problem. It is one of the easiest machines to work on. I replaced a LED screen for a customer (very reasonable price led) It was the easiest Screen I have ever replaced! Just pop off the placstic (no screws) and undo w easily accessible screw and the cable and it is off. Love mine and very lightweight , fast. Is very thin yet has a DVD/RW. Love it ! 04/04/2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Extremely Poor Battery Life This laptop is being marketed as an Ultrabook. The battery life after 5 days, on an avg., is 2 hours. Every thing else is fine. Build quality is good. Keyboard is sensitive (but good). Comes loaded with lot of software which I did uninstall. Battery very very bad for an ultrabook. 03/26/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product and value. I have enjoyed using this laptop since I purchased it. I am very hard on the gadgets that I use because I am always on the go. And they go everywhere that I go. Despite the abuse this ultrabook is still running as well as it did the day I got it. Very happy with it. And for the price you couldn't ask for more. 03/25/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Inspiron 14z-excellent pc except for the faulty motherboard I am having a 14Z with third gen i7 processor. It is indeed a very beautiful and powerful machine. However, the machine came with a very irritating problem which i hoped could be fixed with updates but it proved me wrong as I believe the motherboard has just failed today. The pc have been facing booting issues since the day i received the machine. The pc also has very high tendency to hang while browsing the net.The forced restart would lead to the blue screen and trust me the experience is just horrible. The problem became even worst as I upgraded to win 8 pro.I can no longer restart the pc even though certain updates would require restart. Each time restarted, the pc will only be able to log into windows after several times directed to the diagnostic page. This pc is also surprisingly very sensitive to devices connected through usb port. It will just restart and lead to the blue screen. However, I need to mention that upgrading the bios managed to improve the situation but never solved it. Today, 19 march after just 7 months of using, the pc just never booted. No beep noise at all.Just dead.I can hear some spinning noise even after more than 12 hours i tried to switch on the pc.I guess the hard drive is still spinning. Lodged a report with dell technical team and told them the noise(called after 2 hours of earlier report) and they said it will disappear after the battery is dead. but now even after more than 12 hours its still there. Am worried its going to damage my storage as all my research work is in it. Dell advised that it could be a motherboard failure and their engineer would only come over after receiving the part. reading reviews written by 14z users, i am confident that dell is competent to solve the problem but i hope the delay in solving it would not be costing my hard drive and all my data in it. I will still say this is a very good machine as am really impressed with its performance-the speed, music, screen quality... 03/19/2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by It is Great if you don't play music.!!! It is really great model with so much good things inside it, but if we look at sound-audio it is not even good with compared to other ultrabooks. I dont know whats the issue is there but volume level in this is too low. It don't give satisfaction to me personally. So i would recommend to not to buy this just because i like to play music and videos on laptop. If anyone can be comfortable with this than its great deal and go for this. This is compact and cute looking fast system. I really like its all specifications excepting volume level of speakers. Especially when the speakers are from skullcandy, i was expecting more. But here i have not got even normal audio performance. Its maximum volume is about only 25-30% of other dell systems having lower price. Really too much disappointed with this. 03/17/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Inspiron 14z is awesome Last week my new Inspiron 14z arrived. I was a little worried by the many previous reviewers who had problems with their devices. In contrast I have had not problems, and the device is fantastic. It boots really fast, without problems, and office 2013 is a nice improvement over 2010. The email setup in outlook is significantly improved. The Inspiron 14z is just the right size, a big enough screen to do real work, but thin and light enough for easy travel. Even with large hands, the keyboard is very comfortable, and the keys have a very good feel. The brushed aluminum finish is very pleasing, and it does not show finger prints like polished plastic. Awesome computer, I'm really pleased that I ignored previous reviews and purchased it. 03/16/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by All Around FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this thing can outlast any other pc, I've put it through heck and back . it gets no special treatment at all whatsoever. i give thi book a high 5 on a chart from 1 to 5 03/15/2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Disappointed I purchased my second Dell because the first purchase was excellent. The keyboard has sensitivity issues with cursor and typing, jumps all over the page. The Number Lock feature is absent and I write in two languages almost daily, in emails I have to write in word and copy paste to email, not efficient. Keyboard is position is not comfortable for typing. I have only owned this device for 3 weeks and not much is a positive for me. 03/08/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Does what it says on the Tin.... with Cream Brilliant Laptop, Slimbook, Ultrabook wannabe. Oh and btw, True Ultrabooks with this spec cost far more. So for a very well featured, slimline, light and useable laptop for a very competitive price..... Top Banana! 03/03/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dell Inspiron 14z - i3 : Great Experience Great design. Appreciable performance. Boot up time etc. are very good. Works great with Windows 8. Only thing I miss on this one is a right click button on keyboard, which is a personal preference. Based on a two months usage of 8 hrs. per day. Loved it so much, that I have ordered 4 Dell Inspiron 14z i5 after using this one for my friends and family. Thanks Dell. 02/16/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by One of the Best Laptops in Market A truly phenomenal laptop. 02/06/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good product I purchased this 14z ultrabook despite what the reviews said. I am happy with my decision because this is a great computer, I love the thinness, and the portability. However I did experience some technical difficulties like after the initial setup the computer won't boot past the dell logo screen, but was easy to fix with a simple call to dell technical support. Dell should fix this issue with the boot security that is causing this issue simply but fixing it or eliminating, because its obviously not needed. Over all this is a good laptop for its price. I think this would be a good laptop for young college students. 01/24/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice Laptop at Great price! I was first hesitant of buying this laptop because of all the bad reviews. I checked other brands and models but I liked the Dell Ultrabook Inspiron 14Z's looks, features, specs, and affordability (bought at Costco). The laptop works fine without any problem and this is a great laptop! 01/18/2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great laptop only slightly held back by keyboard I received my Inspiron 14z less than a week ago and I mostly love it so far. The size is perfect in my opinion: very portable since it's almost as thin as a real ultrabook, but with an actual hard drive and DVD drive. I love the quick boot times from the small SSD, too, and the performance of the machine in general is excellent. Here are my only quibbles. The keyboard is big enough (I have giant hands) and comfortable to use, but its build quality doesn't match the rest of the machine. There's a warp in my keyboard around the D and E keys that wasn't obvious at first, but now that I've seen it I can't un-see it. It's just a shallow depression that makes it look like I've been typing too hard with my left hand or something. I actually considered returning or exchanging this laptop for one with a flat keyboard, but then I saw a 14z in a store and it had the same depression, so the fault is with the model, not my specific computer. It doesn't affect the usability at all and I can live with it, but you can do better, Dell. I also would have appreciated PgUp/PgDn/Home/End keys (there's plenty of room for them), but Dell made the stylistic choice to put those on the arrow keys (with Fn), probably in order to keep the touchpad from ending up slightly off center, but I can live with that too. The only other thing I want to say in this review is that Windows 8 is the least intuitive operating ever devised for PC. In my opinion the "Metro" apps offer no value and nothing but annoyance for anyone on a machine with a mouse and keyboard, so I deleted every single one of them and downloaded the third-party program Start8 to get my Start button back. I recommend that everyone else do the same unless for some reason you think you'd enjoy using tablet apps on a machine without a touchscreen. Overall, though, I'm happy with this computer and would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable laptop in this price range. 01/16/2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Laptop Overall Not Bad, But Windows 8 AWFUL! This laptop probably deserves better than a 3-star rating, but my experiences thus far with the Windows 8 operating system may have colored my feelings somewhat Let me first say that Windows 8, in my opinion, is a seriously flawed system. It is not at all user-friendly and requires too many steps to accomplish what used to be quite simple in Windows 7. Finding anything is decidedly challenging, to say the least, and I have frequently been tempted to just throw the laptop in the ocean in frustration. I have not yet had the first positive experience with Windows 8 and am seriously disappointed that I treated myself to a new laptop with a supposedly "better" operating system (Windows 8) that is so horrible and difficult to navigate. Right off the bat, I discovered that Windows Easy Transfer is virtually impossible between Windows 7 and Windows 8 laptops. I followed all the steps to the letter, had the Easy Transfer cable, did everything I was supposed to, and thought the transfer was going to work swimmingly - until I got the message that the computer could not connect to my network....say, what? What network? Very frustrating, as both laptops were connected to the wireless network with full signal strength. No matter how many times I tried, I got the same message. When I requested assistance from Microsoft, all I got were instructions on how to do the transfer. I asked specific questions, which were not even addressed. It took me long enough to adjust to Windows 7 from whatever the OS was before that, but at least the two were somewhat similar. Windows 8 is 100% DIFFERENT than any prior OS Microsoft has come up with! My suggestion, if you get a new laptop, do whatever you have to do to avoid Windows 8 like the plague. Again, please remember, this is only my opinion. The laptop itself, overall, is not bad. I was a little concerned about the small screen size, as I switched from a 17" screen to a 14" screen, but I have not really noticed any issues. The screen is clear, laptop is lightweight and compact, LOVE the feel of the chiclet keys on the keyboard, touchpad is responsive and easy to use. Processing is quick (despite Windows 8), and the battery life isn't too bad, as long as you aren't going to be away from a power source for an extended period - I generally can get about 4 hours. Specific pros and cons below. PROS: Lightweight, compact Quick processing speed Crystal clear display Satisfactory battery life CONS: WINDOWS 8 Number and locations of all TWO USB ports, one of which is stronger or more powerful or whatever, than the other. Left-side port is hidden behind a difficult-to-use cover, right-side port is nearer to the front of the computer than the back. Location and type of CD/DVD player/burner. Has slide-out DVD tray, rather than just push to insert, and the tray is on the right side at the back. If you plug anything like a mouse into the right side USB port, it gets in the way of the tray when it ejects. WINDOWS 8!!!! 01/12/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I recently purchased the badly and so wrongly reviewed 14z inspiron ultrabook. First things first, the reviews got me so worried about the display, but their is nothing wrong with the resolution. Yes, it's a bit less brighter than other notebooks out there, but it is more than good enough. The battery could be a little more, but I usually use it at home, so it's not really a problem for me. But in general, I'd say it lasts around 4 and a half hours. I am awfully pleased with the product. This is my first Dell purchase, and I assure you I will be back for my next! The design is magnificent, and the keyboard is fun to use. Although, I did face one problem. When I turned the lappy on after the first shut down, it wouldn't move past the Dell logo, but all good, nothing the forums couldn't fix. My ultrabook has no problems whatsoever and the speakers are more than satisfying. Great job on this one Dell! 01/11/2013
Rated 1 out of 5 Got a LEMON bought the laptop and did not even boot the first time ... the diagnostics says hard disk is not working ... this is the first time i ever experienced a laptop fail in first boot ... 01/07/2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Computer I almost bought a Sony when I found the Inspiron. I love the versatility it has and of course the speed, reliability, and the cool sleek black design. I live in the middle of nowhere with satellite internet and it works better than any other computer I have put on this connection. I have a 60" wide screen this is connected to with HDMI and talk about awesome!! No, I do not do any online gaming. I would have nothing but a Dell, period. Cons I only regret that I did not upgrade to a larger hard drive like 1TB and get the Bluetooth package when I bought this system. I have heard a lot of horror stories about Vista. When I bought this computer I did not want to pay extra for XP. So I thought I would try Vista Home Premium. I love it!! for me XP is the thing of the past now. 01/01/2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Ultimate Disappointment My first laptop used to shutdown on its own. Dell gave me replacement as this ultrabook. Dell knows that they have known problems with this model, still they ship such laptops. First time I started laptop it worked fine but unable to boot on second time. Dell tech(PATHETIC) solved that problem. Next day wifi not picking up... I spent hours and hours on call to solve it. I had to be on call 3-4 times for 2-3 hours every time to troubleshooting wifi problem. 12/30/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Technology made easy! The Ultrabook was my first new laptop in seven years. I purchased Windows 8. I pulled the laptop out of the box and was able to be on the Internet and reviewing documents in twenty minutes. It was so easy. My past experiences were many hours of loading programs and getting things up and running. Windows 8 was easy to get to know. I love the Ultrabook! It is so light and thin. Technology made easy. 12/26/2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Grt Mahine...But if it solves the boot up issue This is my first laptop and I was quite excited to see this model 14z in such an affordable price with grt features.Mine is Inspiron 14z i5 machine. Delivery was quite quick and I was pleased they gave home delivery without any extra charges. Initial set up was ok BUT to my utter disappointment the laptop failed to boot up and stuck at the DELL Logo after the first shut down. I was very tensed because it was just 3 hours after I received the laptop. however I quickly called up dell technical support team and they had resolved the issue very efficiently. In addition to that they also provided me information about the windows 8 Features as it was new for me being an Windows XP user. Now the machine is fine and working as expected. I would still recommend this machine to others BUT I would request DELL Product Team to look for the Permanent Fix for Boot Up issue and could also look into the battery life as this is not as claimed in the specifications. But Still a grt machine... :) 12/24/2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I am very pleased overall. It is lightweight, the keyboard and mouse a comfortable. I am having some difficulty with the new Windows 8 that it came with. Set up was easy and without any problems. I have not yet loaded all programs I had on my last laptop but those I have loaded have gone seamlessly. 12/16/2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good midrange laptop Great lightweight laptop. Nice and portable, great performance.does everything we need it to do. 12/15/2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Ultrabook packed with features and glitches!! Have been using it for the past 3 months and it is portable and good looking.. But, it has undergone hardware replacements twice and numerous fixes by tech support.. Pros: light weight, metal finish, decent performance Cons: bad network connectivity (wifi and bluetooth), battery backup is poor 12/08/2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Wouldn't boot, but now it works fine! When I first received my laptop, it worked fine and it was very fast. However, after shutting it down and turning it back on later, it wouldn't go past the dell logo. I was very frustrated, but a friend of mine helped me do some scans and fixed the problem. Just wanted to let others know about the boot problem, it can be fixed! Works wonderful now! Sleek, fast, and efficient. 12/08/2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Does Not Boot Up After First Shutdown Bought this computer from local store, started up and configured it for first time use. So far so good. Shut it down and started, only to see that the laptop does not pass the DELL Logo Screen. Looks like the Boot Software is hosed. I returned the product to the store and bought a new one, and ran into the same problem. I have been a dell loyalist for many many years and I went a head with Dell for this purchase as I was confident of the quality, but looks like Dell has messed it up big time with this line. The laptop was supposed to come with Adobe Elements and Premeire installed, but I have not seen them for the "brief" period I used the laptop. This has been a biggest dampener of holiday mood as this was bought for the kids use. I see that lot of people have ran into these problems. I am in a fix on to return the system and go for another computer or raise a service desk. 11/29/2012
