This film is an emotional march from past to present combining rarely seen news footage from 1964 with present day testimony to tell the true story of troubled times in the historic tourist town of St. Augustine, Florida. This is an excellent documentary, ideal for all the family to watch together. Not just a retelling about the incidents that took place during the Civil Rights era in Florida, like the infamous Axe Handle Saturday. It is actually a reflection about our reality: After so many years, so many silent battles with sittings and marches and silent protests, not so much has really changed.
I had the privilege of attending the avant premiere of this movie at a full theatre in Jacksonville in 2006, with the attendance of several of the protagonists of the real events during the '60s. A crowded theatre, a deeply moved audience giving a stand up applause as the names of the marchers were scrolling up on the screen and the final words of the director, Jeremy Dean: "cynicism is a buffer against commitment". That is why he decided to make the film in the first place: because in spite of all the stories too many things remain the same: in certain cities the situation of the black citizens continues to be relegated. And the director asks the audience: what can we DO now, today, to solve that?
The answer is on you...

The necesity of memory

With the first black presidential candidate in our history, this is a film many Americans can learn a lot from. I saw it at a cinema when I was out in Los Angeles, after reading positive reviews in the LA Times and LA Weekly. It did not disappoint. If anything it was better than I expected, probably because it's *not* what you expect a "civil rights film" to be. I think we've all watched some very worthy documentaries about the African American struggle to achieve equality but somehow nothing I've seen before moved me like this. Maybe it's the mix of old and very dramatic footage with present day interviews--people who actually got beat up for standing up for their rights, and people who have yet to see the promise of Dr. King's dream fulfilled in their lives.

I have wanted to purchase this dvd for a while. This story tells the truth about the American Jim Crow System.
