    What's a Tablet PC?

Tablet PCs are compact, ultra-portable entertainment devices that let you read email, surf the internet, read eBooks, view photos, play games, listen to music and watch video files. Most tablets are based on a smaller operating system, which allows you to purchase and download additional applications from supported stores. Tablet PCs do not have a CD/DVD drive and will not run Microsoft Windows or its applications. Tablet PCs function as a secondary device for casual entertainment purposes, and are not meant to replace a computer. They are ideal for use around the home and on the go with WiFi or 3-4g mobile broadband connections (pay as you go, contract may be required for service).

Beyond expectations - Great little workhorse

Hello Folks, If you are like me, wading through a seemingly endless array of no-name, sub $100 tablets, can be a little overwhelming. It seems there is a minefield of sub-par junk out there. I "researched" the possibilities for over a month. Reading reviews and user opinions all over the net. I looked for net-wide trends, as reviews for a given brand/model are all over the place. This brand(D2 Pad) seemed to review fairly well. Walmart sold the previous 7" and 9"models here, and reviews averaged well over 4 stars out of 5. Now they carry three new models from D2 Pad. This model, the D2-721, differs from the other two(D2-712 and D2-912). It has a different screen ratio and resolution(800x600) and a dedicated 1GB of system ram(vs. 512MB in the others). Other specs are similar, though the other two have "rubberized" backs. I believe both the black and white models of the D2-721 are identical. Walmart's site suggest otherwise, I believe they are in error. They list the processor as running @1.5GHz, also an error, it runs @1.2GHz max. See D2 Pad's website for specs. Mine came with a charger and a USB micro cable, but did not come with a USB OTG cable as stated, "as included", on Walmart's website. OK! Now for the nitty-gritty..... Looks well made. Performs well with everything I've tried. I have tried the Angry Birds series, runs great and fluid. Youtube plays fine, loads fairly quickly. I don't Netflix or Skype, so I cannot speak to those. Surfing the net is fine, well beyond practical, no complaints. Android "Jelly Bean" works very well. It came with the Amazon and 1mobile App store. Between the two, I have found all the apps I have looked for. Of the two, I prefer the Amazon App Store. I have not tried to DL the Google app store, as I have not found the need to. This tablet is not "rooted", so installing the Google app store may not be possible without a hack. Again, I have not needed it. Apps generally install quickly and without any hitches. The G-Sensor works well. WiFi works well, and in my house, shows comparable signal strength bars to our laptops in the same location. With the WiFi on, The battery lasts us about 4.5 hrs(playing games, surfing the net, etc). Do follow the manual's initial charging routine as directed, to insure the best battery performance. Charging isn't that fast while the unit is sleeping, however, it is pretty fast if you power the unit down before charging. The display is nice for the price, but it is not going to compare to a Retina or IPS display. No surprise there. The speaker is OK, seems to sound better on games than it does with other content. Sound was as expected from this price point. Use a "volume booster" app if you find it inadequate. I have not tried headphones(not included), but I piped it through our home stereo and it sounded fine. The mic works, but since I don't Skype, I don't know if it is adequate for that duty or not. The capacitive touchscreen is 5-way multi-touch and responds well, as does the onscreen keyboard. The touch seems a tad sensitive, but oddly, only in some apps(i.e. Amazon App Store), but again it works fine. The camera's picture quality is not great. However, I still have the unit's factory screen protector on, and it may adversely impact it's quality. A nice camera was not important to me and it performs at a level consistent with my expectations, at this price point. This tablet does not have all the "bells and whistles" some others have, but every feature it does have, performs admirably. It does what it does and makes no excuses in it's execution. Not that it matters, but just for perspective; I am a longtime tech head, electronics and computer affection ado. I am a previously certified "Mil-spec" electronics tech. Regarding tablets at this price point, it is important to keep one's expectations realistic. Is it an iPad or a Galaxy II or III? Of course not. But if you are looking for a capable, seemingly well made, sub $100 tablet, you could do a lot, and I mean a lot worse. I have not had to use the "Reset" button once. In the interest of full disclosure; I have owned the unit a little over a month. I bought my unit elsewhere, as Walmart did not have them when I was ready to buy. I also purchased a 2 yr protection plan($20) that also covers accidental damage(highly recommended). Lastly, a note on the power connector. Tablets have very small jacks for the charging plug. No different than other devices of this type/scale. Care must be exercised when plugging and unplugging such small connectors. Be gentle. I'm glad Walmart carries these now, as I intend to buy two more and their site-to-store will make gifting easy. Sorry about the verbosity of this review. I hope it makes your buying decision a little easier. I'll try to come back and answer posted questions. Thanks for reading. -Michael(formally "Tabletless")

Where to start? I bought this tablet before any review were written, so I was actually pretty cautious at first. I didn't want to expect too much from the D2 Tablet. However, after getting this tablet in the mail, I have no regrets! Recently, someone left a very good review that is very helpful, but I wanted to touch on a couple more points. Firstly, I wanted to mention my experience using some of the software that the other review couldn't vouch for. I have tried Skype on the tablet and it works very well. The microphone on this tablet is alright, but not great. I often caught myself bringing the left of my tablet (where the microphone is) up to my face, so the other person could hear me better. That being said, if you are in a pretty quiet area and are talking fairly loud, the other person on Skype should be able to hear you just fine. Really, not all to bad. In fact, I have seen much worse mics in nice laptops. I often take this tablet with me to a cafe and just do a voice call with Skype and chat directly into the mic with no problems what so ever. I also wanted to touch on Netflix. I have watched full movies on my tablet through Netflix and have never had a problem. The loading seems perfectly fine and doesn't stall or jump. Runs great. Alright, now onto some of its other hardware features. The battery life is a little short, but I knew that right from the start and it actually hasn't been much of a problem for me. The internet is what drains your tablet the most, so if you are on a road trip and just want to use it to play games, always switch your wifi off. Unlike most tablets, when you use the USB adapter to plug into a computer, it DOESN'T charge your tablet. You must use the power cord! I am not sure if there is a software hack to get the tablet to charge using the USB cord, or if it is just physically impossible to charge it through the USB, because of how the tablet is made. I thought that was worth mentioning, because it surprised me a little when my tab was still dying after I plugged it into my computer. The processor uses a 1.5 GHz chip, which is very impressive for the price. To put it in perspective, it is faster than a Kindle Fire. Also, the G2 Tablet has 1 GB of ram. Again, impressive for the price and better than the original Kindle Fire. I only compare the two devices, because I know a lot of people have played with the Kindle and this might give them a better idea of how the G2 will run. The screen doesn't have the best resolution, but it's nothing to complain about. Most people don't notice the screen resolution unless you really point it out and make them have a side by side comparison with an HD screen. The last point I want to talk about is the markets you can get your apps from. This tablet doesn't have the Google Play Store. This was my biggest concern when buying this tablet. I was worried the 1Mobile Market and the Amazon App Store wouldn't have all that I needed. I can honestly say, I shouldn't have worried at all. Every app I hear about from my friends, I have found on these stores. If you are desperate to get an app on the Google Play Store, I have tried downloading an app from my web browser, by going to the online Google Play Store. They actually seem to run fine. I think the downfall of this is they won't be automatically updated because they aren't synced to your tablet. Bottom line, don't worry near as much as I did about not having the Google Play Store. Overall, this tablet is a steal of a deal. I have used plenty of other tablets and searched for days to find the best tablet that was under $100, and for the price, I wouldn't go with any other one. I highly recommend this tablet! P.S. On a side note, I am not sure why, but from the front, EVERYONE seems to think the G2 is an ipad mini. If you hold the G2 up to a mini, they really don't look very similar besides, perhaps, the shape. Still, it is always fun for someone to be jealous of your "$400" tablet... well... at least that's what they think. If you decide to get one of these, enjoy!

    • A. Yes you can. You can open both types. First, lets look at Word. Your D2 tablet comes pre-installed with a file reader called Kingsoft Office. Make sure to click on this and set it up. (You can push that you don't agree for them to monitor you, and it will still run) Anyways, update the software if you need to. Next, go to your email and click on the attachment. You should download the Microsoft Word document. It will pop up with a notification in the bottom right of your tablet that the file is downloaded. If you open up the notification screen, you will get an error, "This file format is not supported." Don't worry about this! Now navigate to your, "Downloads" icon under your app section. Click on the file you just downloaded and it will open perfectly, by automatically using Kingsoft Office to open it. If you wan't to view PDF files, download the Adobe Reader App. It is free and can run on android 2.2 or higher. The D2 Tablet has a 4.1 android system running on it. So, you should have no problems. Hope this answered your question!

    • A. Hello, Kingsoft for Android is a free office suite. I think it comes pre-installed, but if not, it is available through the included app store and is free. I use it for PDFs, but their website claims to support MS Word and other docs as well. I'm sure other apps are available as well.

    • A. Short answer: No it doesn't have google play. I wrote a review, and tried to talk about the fact that this tablet doesn't have the Google Play Store. I was really worried about this at first, but to my surprise, I haven't ever felt like I was missing anything. I can always find the apps that I want. Plus, as far as I have seen, I am able to download apps from my web browser, from the online Google Play Store. I have to manually navigate to the website though. Again, I haven't experimented with this too much, but I think the apps might not automatically update because Google Play isn't installed on the tablet. That being said, I haven't experimented that much, because I haven't had the need to use Google Play. (to my astonishment) I really have found every app I searched in either the 1Mobile Market store or the Amazon App Store.
