The top removes by lifting straight upward...no hinges, but with small plastic dowels to hold it in place when closed. That is a plus in my mind. It arrived at the store boxed and in good condition with the legs wrapped to protect the finish. It sits level on the floor so the legs are properly squared with the bottom and sides of the ottoman. 02/24/2013

The lid sits on the top and is held from slipping off by little rubber feet- so I'm guessing they are intended as floor cushions- the feet make the top sit off the floor by about an inch. 01/26/2013
