You can use any Crayola crayons, as long as they fit into the tray, Shawn!

We used the crayola crayons provided in the package, but I'm presuming you could use any type of crayons, though it may take more or less time depending on the wax content.

Regular crayons as in CRAYOLA ones.....Yes, Crayola only....Do NOT use CHEAP off brands.

It says you can use regular crayons, including crayon pieces because when you put them all together in the melting pot the melt together and form a new crayon in whatever mold you choose.

Any crayons work and cheaper crayons melt faster than Crayola.

It says you should only use Crayola crayons, but they don't have to be the ones that came with the mold. You can use old, broken Crayola crayons. You just have to take the paper wrapper off.

They suggest crayola brand crayons because they cannot guarantee the wax content of other brands

Just make sure the crayons are made of wax and you will be ok , but not recommend the crayon maker it self didn't work for me.

It doesn't work on any crayons. It is a terrible product!

Can regular crayons be used or do you have to use crayons specifically made for this product?

Hi Vitalkids, The Crayola Melt 'n Mold comes with a Crayon Mold and Ring Mold. Molds like the Race Car your son wants, is sold separately.

The basic set includes a mold to make 3 crayons and 2 crayon rings. You have to purchase any additional molds separately.

Includes hearts and rings. We were really disappointed that is all that was in the box.

i think it includes a "crayon shaped mold" and a "ring shaped mold" according to the info on the box. Other mold shapes available at participating stores (if stocked)

It comes with the ring mold and regular crayon mold. The expansion pack one comes with more molds. If your son wants the race car I suggest purchasing it separately.

Mine came with the "regular crayon shape" mold and the "crayon ring" mold. I'm not sure if you can buy other molds but my son would love to make race cars. I'm going to google it.

Only CRAYOLA crayons, other brands are not recommended and considered unsafe. Any Crayola crayons will work, they aren't specifically made for this kit.

We suggest using Crayola crayons with our Melt 'N Mold Factory, Ashley, since our crayons were used during product testing. Using another brand of crayons may change the outcome of your project.

my 10yo can do it all by herself

I received notifications that there was a problem with delivery of items from your store. The email had virus warnings and I couldn't open. I believe it was bogus emails as I received everything I ordered in a timely fashion. The product was as expected.

Great Gift.

It's so easy and fun my kids love it! The three worst things are having to add more time for all the pieces to melt, waiting for the door to unlock and that you should ONLY use Crayolas brand.

My nephew saw this product at Walmart and wanted it badly. However, I told him I was not going to pay $45 for it and told him I would look online for it cheaper. I ended up finding it on ebay for $26 with free shipping. While waiting for it to ship, I decided to check out the reviews and saw that everyone seemed to have trouble with this product.

Tonight we ended up trying it out...and it actually worked much better than I had anticipated. The melting part does not take that long (roughly 10 min to melt and 10 min to cool = total of 20 min or so). For clean up, we decided to reheat the tray and then wipe it with a paper towel and that worked great. (Although probably not recommended, we just reheated it over our stove using tongs to hold the tray)

I'm not sure if Crayola made some updates to the product or if the other reviewers just had a bad batch...but we did not notice any problems besides the messy cleanup if you try to scrape it out.

My nephew's favorite so far has been the camo cars!!

Not as bad as reviews claim

Went to a bday party for a friend of my sons. They got this item as a gift and the kids wanted to play with it. We followed the instructions, plugged it in and setup it.

It worked great, but does take time to heat up and melt crayons. As you can imagine this item is for kids and children so you don't want something to super heat up fast which can be a hazard for kids

As the review notes from Crayola staff call out it is important to seat the tray firmly and wait for the melt.

Creative and Fun

If you like making crayon rings and multi-color crayons endlessly than this might be for you. I think the value would be much better if it included 5-10 more templates in the initial box, especially for $44 as a starting price.

Fun at first, but limited repeatability

My daughter wanted this very badly. So I bought it for her for Christmas. Don't waste your money. It took 3x the amount of time it was supposed to to melt the crayons. We had to reset the timer 3x. And if you aren't standing there watching it, it turns itself off (for safety) and you have to start the heating process all over. Then when it appeared melted enough to pour the melted wax Into the mold chamber, the instructions claim that all the wax flows down into the mold completely, allowing easy clean up. This didn't happen. It left a lot of wax in the melting plate and plenty stuck inside the area leading down to the mold. Huge disappointment and a waste of money. And since it was a gift, I bought two refill packs so she wouldn't run out of things to make.... More wasted money. And to too it all off, we only got one decent crayon out of the mold since most of the wax never made it Down to the mold.
